友人夫妻が平江路に新しくオープンしたお店「Danish Baking Shifu」が

It’s really the last thing you would expect as you stroll along Pingjiang Lu: a little piece of Denmark located alongside traditional qipao shops and dumpling stalls. Danish Baking Shifu is a charming bakery owned by Lars, a Dane whose grandfather was a Danish baker. Lars moved to Suzhou three years ago and now runs the shop together with his wife, a local Suzhounese.
Situated next to the canal that runs parallel to Pingjiang Lu, the location of the store is perfect for a mid-morning or afternoon coffee break. The décor inside is similarly welcoming; Danish flags peek out from all over the shop, and the color scheme has the effect of transporting you immediately to a little café in the middle of Copenhagen.
Danish Baking Shifu offers crowd pleasers for those with a sweet tooth. The husband and I sampled several of their specialties, and while I found some a tad too sweet, he felt that they offered just the right amount of a sugar rush.

The Coconut Tops (RMB 10), a traditional Danish pastry, was fragrant and aromatic. The flavor of coconut was strong without being overwhelming, and there was a satisfying, chewy bite with every mouthful. The Butter Cookies (RMB 18) could have been more crumbly, but overall, the taste was rich and buttery, and they went well with a cup of morning coffee.
We also tried the cupcakes (RMB 18), which once again, were rich and chocolaty, but seemed to be a little on the dense side. The star of our morning tea were the Cinnamon Rolls (RMB 12), served freshly baked and just out of the oven.

You can choose the amount of sugar you want on your cinnamon roll, and Lars will adjust it accordingly. He bakes several batches throughout the day so there is never the risk of a customer getting something stale. We loved our cinnamon rolls. They were soft and chewy, with a deep cinnamon flavor that wasn’t too cloying.
Overall, Danish Baking Shifu could be a nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a mid-day sweet treat. There are some misses and perhaps the texture of some of their pastries could be improved. However, what they have gotten right so far, such as their cinnamon rolls, will surely net them their fair share of fans.
