読書 その五 後楽園

冒険好きな事は、彼の最も強い性格の一つでした。　彼は幼少の頃から旅に出たい
と思っていました。　オカヤマには多くのアメリカ人やイギリス人の旅行者を引き
寄せる美しい公園がありました。　そこに来た外国人とその上等な衣服は、彼らに
ついて行って頭をなぜてもらっていた、少年を魅了しました。

アメリカは友達の間で、好機の地として話題になっていました。　そういった
全てがこの国を見たいと言う情熱を彼の心の中で駆り立てていました。　
日本では、全国的な軍事訓練を実施していた時期でした。
ヤスオは父親に士官学校か、アメリカのどちらかに行きたいと伝えたのでした。
彼の父は、アメリカ行きを渋々承諾したのです。

1906年の秋、彼は父親からもらった約２００ドルを持って出航しました、アメリカに
友達はなく、ほんの少しの単語しか知らず、通訳するのに十分な英語を学ぶ事以外は
これと言った計画もなく、そして2～3年後には日本に帰る、彼の将来は約束されて
いました。　この度胸と無邪気さを併せての所業には敬服されてしまいます。
「これから見るであろう多くの魅力的ですばらし事を考えていました。」と彼は
話します。　「そして出発の時には、感傷的なものや涙はなく行きました。」



Adventurousness was one of his strongest traits. From the time he was a small
Boy he wanted to travel. Okayama had a beautiful park which attracted many
American and English tourists. They and their fine clothes fascinated the boy,
who used to follow them around and be patted on the head. Among his friends
America was talked of as the land of opportunity. All of this aroused in him a
Passion to see this country. Universal military training was in effect in Japan.
Yasuo announced to his father that he must go either to an officers’ training school
or to America. His father reluctantly consented to the latter. In the fall of 1906
he sailed with about two hundred dollars from his father, with no friends in
America, with only a few English words, and with no plans except to learn English
well enough to translate, and then after two or three years to return to Japan,
his future assured. The combined courage and innocence that this meant can only
be admired. “I thought of the many exotic and wonderful things I would see,”
he says, “and when the time came to go I left without sentimentalities or tears.”
