On the other hand the impact of the war on him was immediate and strong.
Because of his Japanese birth he can never be an American citizen, but he has
long felt himself an American in every other respect. long before most of us, as
early as the invasion of Manchuria in 1931, he was against the Japanese govern-
ment and did not conceal his opinions. After Pearl Harbor he was of course
classed as an enemy alien, and things might have been difficult had it not been
for his known liberalism. As it was, his position among American artists was in
no way affected. When he offered to resign from the jury of the Pennsylvania
Academy, the latter would not hear of it. In the height of the war he was awarded
the first prize at the Carnegie Institute.
