この最近の発展を討論でクニヨシは、二次元の後退していく面の連続の様な東洋的方法の中で物を無意識のうちに感じながら育てられたと思い返しています。　それでミラーがクニヨシに物事を奥行きで見ることを教えました。　クニヨシがヨーロッパに行ったとき見たのは、ルネッサンス最盛期の古い巨匠達でした。　今、彼は立体的絵画の経験を持って、元の出発点に戻ったと感じています。

クニヨシは今、ジオット、ピエール・デラ・フランチェスカ、ウッチェロ、ボッシュ、　そしてグリュネヴァルトのような巨匠達に興味を持っています、もし彼がもう一度海外に行くならば彼らを研究するでしょう。　確かにクニヨシの新しい変化とミケランジェロとラファエル以前の
イタリアのフレスコ画の間には平行するものがあります。　

しかし最近のクニヨシの作品から判断するに、殆どの今日の抽象絵画の平面的なものに目標を定めているわけではありません。　　クニヨシは、形体をどちらかと言うと平面のパターンよりは質量として感じています、そして彼にとって色彩と色調は、質量と奥行きから切り離せないものなのです。　しかしクニヨシは、その上さらに錯覚法をも使います。　クニヨシの現在の目標は、平面的パターンの価値を認識した立体的絵画にあるように見られます、これは画面への規範を保持しつつ円熟した空間を形成します。



Discussing this recent development, Kuniyoshi recalls that he had been
brought up unconsciously feeling things in the Oriental way, as a series of two-
dimensional receding planes. Then Miller taught him to see things in depth.
When he went to Europe, the old masters he looked at were those of the High
Renaissance. Now he feels that he is going back to his original starting-point,
but with the experience of three-dimensional painting. He is interested now in
masters like Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Uccello, Bosch and Grünewald, and
if he goes abroad again he will study them. Certainly there are parallels between
his new phase and Italian fresco painting before Michelangelo and Raphael. But
judging by his recent work, he is not aiming at the flatness of much present-day
abstract painting. He feels forms as volume rather than as flat pattern, and to
him color and tone are inseparable from volume and depth. But he also realizes
by illusionism. His present aim appears to be three-dimensional painting in which
the value of two-dimensional pattern is recognized, which creates round form in
space while preserving the integrity of the picture plane.
