エラトステネスの計算　（地球１周４万キロ）

　エラトステネスはヘレニズム時代のギリシャの天文学者である。彼は、地球が球体である事を既に知っており、地球の１周が約４万キロであることも計測していたという。　　
　太陽の仰角は、地球上の緯度によって異なるが、緯度という角度と緯度間の距離を把握すれば、地球の１周を計算できる事に気付きこれを実行した。

　ギリシャの学問が現代に貢献している。

　Eratosthenes was a Hellenistic Greek astronomer. He already knew that the earth is a sphere, and he also measured that the circumference of the earth is about 40,000 km.
　The elevation angle of the sun varies depending on the latitude on the earth, but I realized that if I knew the angle of latitude and the distance between the latitudes, I could calculate the circumference of the earth.

 

　Greek scholarship contributes to modern times.

史実を軽視するNHK大河ドラマ

　NHKの大河ドラマは、私のお気に入りの番組の１つである。この番組で初めて知った歴史的知見も多い。
　しかしながら、大河ドラマは歴史に忠実に制作されているかというとそうではないので、注意が必要である。

　NHKも視聴率を重視しているので、視聴者に迎合したくなるのであろうが、国民全体の歴史的知見を向上させる絶好の機会を台無しにしていると私には思える。番組の内容を鵜呑みにしてしまう視聴者が多数いるはずである。
　NHKの番組の制作方針が、どのようになっているのか知らないが、史実を曲げてまで大衆に迎合するような姿勢は改めて欲しい。

NHK taiga drama that disregards historical facts
　NHK Taiga Drama is one of my favorite programs. There are many historical findings that I learned for the first time in this program.
　However, it is not true that Taiga dramas are produced faithfully to history, so it is necessary to be careful.

　NHK also attaches great importance to audience ratings, so it may be tempting to pander to viewers, but I think it is ruining a great opportunity to improve the historical knowledge of the entire nation. There must be a lot of viewers who accept the content of the program without question.
　I don't know what NHK's program production policy is, but I want them to change their stance of pandering to the masses by twisting historical facts.

半跏思惟像

　半跏思惟像は、弥勒菩薩が片足を他方の足の上に乗せ台に座った姿で思索にふける姿を表した仏像である。弥勒は釈迦の弟子であり、死後天界の兜率天へ行き、再び現界に弥勒菩薩として降臨し、人類を救うと言われている。
　従って、人類を救うにはどうしたら良いかと塾考している姿という事になる。

因みに弘法大師空海は、弥勒菩薩に従って再び人間世界に来生すると遺告したという。

　Hanka Pensive Statue is a Buddhist statue that represents Maitreya Bodhisattva sitting on a pedestal with one leg on top of the other, indulging in thought. Miroku is a disciple of Shakyamuni, and after his death he goes to Tushita in the heavenly world, and is said to return to the physical world as Miroku Bodhisattva to save mankind.
　Therefore, it means a figure that is contemplating what to do to save mankind.

　By the way, Kobo Daishi Kukai is said to have made a testament that he would follow Maitreya Bodhisattva and return to the human world again.

 

学校教育に儒学を！

学校教育に儒学を！

　近年、親殺しや子殺しが随分多くなってきた。回転寿司店での下品な営業妨害行為等、日本人の心が少し可笑しくなっているように感じられてならない。

　外国人の評価では、日本人は礼儀正しく、正直で約束を守るとの事であるが、日本人の感覚からすると最近、それらが崩れてきているように感じるのは私だけではあるまい。
　第二次大戦で学校教育を戦争に利用された苦い思い出がトラウマになって、思想教育はタブーになっているようだが、考えを改める必要がある。

　日本が幕末に欧米の侵略に抵抗し、更に明治を乗り越えられたのは、徳川幕府の元で培われた儒教を中心とする漢学が深く国民に浸透していたからである。
　この教育財産は、大正、昭和に維持はされたが、発展することはなかったのではないか。そして、大戦の敗北で、この教育財産を捨てることになってしまった。

　何事も、よい事は採用し、悪い部分は捨てれば良いのです。アメリカに遠慮して、自分の宝を捨ててしまう事は有ってはならない。人間開発の見地から、小学校の教育に儒学を採りいれるべきである。

Confucianism in school education!
　In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of parricide and infanticide cases. I can't help but feel that the Japanese mind has become a little  wrong, such as vulgar obstruction of business at conveyor belt sushi restaurants.

　According to foreigners, Japanese people are polite, honest, and keep their promises, but I think I'm not the only one who feels like these things are falling apart these days.
　I seems that bitter memories that school education was used for war in World War II became trauma, but we need to change our thinking.

　The reason why Japan was able to resist the invasion by Europe and the United States at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and survive the Meiji period was that Chinese learning centered on Confucianism, which was cultivated under the Tokugawa shogunate, had penetrated deeply into the people.
　This education property was maintained during the Taisho and Showa periods, but it may not have developed. And with the defeat of the war, we had thrown away this educational property.

　In all cases, the good parts should be adopted, and the bad parts should be discarded. We must not throw away our treasures in the face of America. From the perspective of human development, Confucianism should be introduced into elementary school education.

日本の良くて悪い言葉（水に流す）

　日本には「水に流す」という言葉がある。過去の経緯は忘れて、新しい関係をお互いに築いていきましょうという前向きな姿勢を勧める言葉である。
　様々な評価があるが、「水に流す」、「忘れる」という事は人生を前向きで積極的に生きるために有効だと思う。

　しかしながら、常に有効で有益かというと、必ずしもそうではない。幾つか別の見方を並べると、健忘症、さばさばしすぎ、変わり身が速い等が考えられる。
　中国では、日中戦争の事を国民が忘れないように、当時の事を児童教育に盛り込んでいるというが、中国人からすれば、日本人は健忘症か反省が無いといった評価になるだろう。

　もう一つ、「水に流す」習慣から、余り好ましくない事が起きる。それは、組織や人間関係で何か問題があっても、水に流す、無かった事にする、臭い物には蓋をするといった行動に繋がる可能性があるという事である。
　過去の事に囚われ、脱却出来ずに苦しむ事も良くないが、悩みは無いが反省も無いというのは頂けない。

Japanese Good and Bad Words　(mizu ni nagasu)
　In Japan, there is a saying, "mizu ni nagasu."In English, it has the same meaning as "let bygones be bygones". It is a word that encourages a positive attitude to forget about the circumstances of the past and build a new relationship with each other.
　There are various evaluations, but I think that "mizu ni nagasu" and "forgetting" are effective for living life positively.

　However, it is not always effective and beneficial. Amnesiac, too quick-tempered, fast-changing, and so on, to name a few alternatives.
　In China, it is said that the Sino-Japanese War is included in children's education so that the people do not forget about it. From the perspective of the Chinese, the Japanese would be evaluated as having amnesia or lacking remorse.

　Another not-so-good thing happens from the habit of "mizu ni nagasu". That is, even if there is some kind of problem in an organization or human relations, it may lead to actions such as ignoring it, pretending it didn't exist, or putting a lid on smelly things.
　It's not good to be trapped in the past and suffer without being able to get out of it, but it's not good to say that you have no worries but no reflections too.
