芸術鑑賞 ００５ アルフレッド・スティグリッツ

近代写真の父とも言われるアルフレッド・スティーグリッツは、　写真の歴史上重要な人物です。
ただ一人のアーティストの力で出来た訳ではないでしょうが、もしフランスでナダールが写真を芸術の域まで高めたと言うならば、アメリカではアルフレッド・スティグレイツだと思います。

スティグリッツは、両親の母国であるドイツに留学中カメラと出会います。 当時のドイツは、物理光学のカメラ、現像科学とも最先端にあった国だったようです。

スティグリッツは、父親のリクエストで１８９０年にドイツからニューヨークに帰って来ました。

古い郵便局前で出くわしたサード・アヴェニュー・ストリート・レイル・ウエイとマディソン・アヴェニュー・カー・システムの終着駅での写真、とても寒い雪の日に水をかけられて湯気の出ている馬を見てなんとなく、センティメンタルになっているスティグリッツのようです。
"I found myself in front of the old Post Office. The Third Avenue street rail way and the Madison Avenue car systems had their terminals there, opposite the old Astor House. It was extremely cold, Snow lay on the ground. A driver in a rubber coat was watering his seaming car horses. How fortunate the horses seemed, having a human being to tend them.... The steaming horses being watered on a cold winter day, the snow-covered streets....my own sense of loneliness in my own country," Stieglitz reminisced about a picture.

一等船室のデッキの端から偶然見下ろしたシーンに暫く魅了されようです。　我にかえり急いで部屋にカメラを取りに行き最後の一枚で写したそうです。
"The scene fascinated me: a round straw hat, the funnel leaning left, the stair way leaning right. the white drawbridge, its railings made of chain, white suspenders crossed on the back of a man below, circular iron machinery, a mast that cut into the sky, completing a triangle. I stood spellbound for a while."

ヨーロッパから戻ってきたスティグリッツは、ニューヨークの近代化に目を見張った事でしょう。　この写真からは、当時の大都会の息吹が感じられそうな気がします。

当時の写真家の多くは、絵画風の写真を制作していました。　スティグリッツは、写真を絵画の模倣から離れ写真独自の芸術性を主張したのです。

この画廊は、１９０５年にエドワード・スタイケンと始めた写真、前衛芸術専門のギャラリーで、
ニューヨーク五番街２９１番地の住所から単に「２９１」として知られています。
スティグリッツによれば、当時一年リースで、月々５０ドル、改築に３５０ドルかかったそうですから、やはりニューヨーク、小さいと言っても決して安くはなかったのでしょう。

"I liked the idea, being eager that New York should see both what we were doing and outstanding prints from other countries, hung in suitable manner and surroundings. Since I knew I rely on Steichen's enthusiasm and ability, I signed a one year lease for the rooms at fifty dollars a month. The cost of installing electric fixtures and having the necessary carpentry done was no more than three hundred dollars", Stieglitz later recalled that the idea for a Photo-Secession exhibition gallery came from Steichen on night in 1905.
