Homophobic texts in Muslim schools
Posted on 26 November 2010

An investigation by the BBC has found that children in Islamic weekend schools in Britain are being taught the Saudi Arabian school curriculum with textbooks containing extreme homophobic and anti-semitic views.
The books have been distributed to a network of schools with five thousand students across Britain from an office owned by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau in London and teach a hardline interpretation of Islam.
The books, which are produced by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Education, state that homosexuals are to be executed but that there is disagreement on whether this should be done by stoning, by burning them to death or by throwing them off cliffs.
They also state non-Muslims will burn in hell and claim that Jews look like pigs and monkeys and are trying to take over the world.
The schools fall outside the jurisdiction of the UK’s Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills as they are privately funded and run outside of normal school hours.
UK Education Minister Michael Gove responded to the report by saying Saudi Arabia had a right to determine its own curriculum, but that homophobic and anti-semitic views must not be taught in British schools.

Saudi Arabia's intolerable antisemitic textbooks

I might describe myself as a liberal who had been mugged by reality. But that was before Monday's Panorama programme about 40 Muslim weekend clubs and schools in the UK using Saudi textbooks that, among other niceties, describe Jews as descended from "monkeys" and "pigs", denigrate nonbelievers, advocate killing homosexuals and refer to the "reprehensible qualities of Jews".

Canada won't attend Durban racism 'hatefest,' Kenney calls it 'charade'

By The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – Thu, 25

OTTAWA - Canada will not attend a United Nations conference on racism next year, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said Thursday.
"Our government has lost faith in the Durban process," Kenney told a news conference. "Canada will not participate in this charade. We will not lend our good name to this Durban hatefest.
"Canada is clearly committed to the fight against racism, but the Durban process commemorates an agenda that actually promotes racism rather than combats it."

UBC symposium on anti-Asian racism finds Maclean's "Too Asian?" too insensitive
Zi-Ann Lum Posted: Nov 27th, 2010

Panelist Dr. Kerry Jang, Professor, UBC Psychiatry and Vancouver City Councilor, shared a story about his own upbringing; of how his grandfather arrived in British Columbia and paid the Chinese head tax and how emphasizing his Canadian citizenship was more important than identifying with his Chinese heritage. “You had to be as non-Chinese as possible,” Jang said, “so I kind of grew up being kind of non-Chinese but being reminded that I was Chinese every so often. We went back and forth with this kind of thing. So quite frankly, I didn’t know how to react when I read the article.” Jang’s sentiments echo with many Canadian-born and naturalized Asians who read the Maclean’s article but were caught in-between cultural worlds and thus, did not know how to react.

“This article harkens back to an older Canada,” explains panelist Dr. Henry Yu, Associate Professor, Department of History and Principle pro tem at St. Johns College, UBC. “It’s also a hurtful article for a lot of people. And in fact, the irony is if you just arrived from Asia, if someone says, ‘You’re so Asian’ – well of course, I was born in Asia.” Yu doesn’t fail to recognize the distinction between Asian international students and domestic Asian-Canadian students, an acknowledgment that Stephanie Findlay and Nicholas Kohler did not care to make nor did the Maclean’s editorial team care to include.

However, the international student is “not the person who’s actually going to feel hurt the most,” Yu continues, “You know who’s going to hurt the most? The person who tried really hard in elementary school and high school to fit in. The person who, like me, thought ‘maybe if I’m captain of the basketball team, it’ll be okay. Maybe if I really work hard to fit in.’ But then every once in a while someone calls you ‘rice’.”
Maybe if I really work hard to fit in.’ But then every once in a while someone calls you ‘rice’.”

Canadian universities have changed significantly in the past four decades. It is should be of no surprise that the children of Asian immigrants and first-generation Asian-Canadians are entering university. It was a surprise for me to see a national magazine adhere to a dangerous discourse to choose not recognize their Canadian identities, but as Asian and as “others.

A Beaver Stadium nightmare
November 14, 2010

It was the first time in my life that I was truly ashamed and embarrassed to be from Pennsylvania. From the moment we parked our car and began walking to the stadium, we were astounded to find people (assumedly students) wearing white T-shirts with offensive slogans and language toward Michigan. The verbal assaults were even more rude, degrading and demeaning. We were prepared for the “normal, high-spirited fun” that goes along with being the opposing team. This was far beyond what any fan should have to endure.

The icing on the cake was halftime. My husband went to use the restroom. I opted to stay in my seat to avoid any further drama. I should have left too, because that was when racial comments began. (I am Caucasian and my husband is African-American). I was called names laced with racial slurs. I am not naïve, but I never expected this on Penn State’s campus.

The two seats directly behind my husband were occupied by elder alumni. The older lady, who was sitting beside the man who made the majority of the racial comments, told me that when she becomes the “president of the board” she is going to make it a rule that people can only leave their seats during halftime. There was no way she could have avoided overhearing the discriminative comments made by the man beside her, but she never said a word to him. Instead, she chose to worry about the crowded seating and people going in and out.
Upon my husband’s return, he told me that a gentleman who was sitting about four rows in front of us (he was dressed like a huge ninja turtle) attempted to refuse to allow my husband to use the restroom. He even went as far as to put his arm across the doorframe to block my husband’s path. My husband told the man, an adult fan, that if he didn’t move his arm he was going to urinate on him. My husband moved the man’s arm and went into the bathroom. For the remainder of the game, the man kept looking back and taunting my husband.

Willie Nelson Arrested for Marijuana Possession in Texas
November 27, 2010

Willie Nelson is free on $2,500 bond after being charged for possession of six ounces of marijuana found aboard his tour bus Friday morning (Nov. 26) in West Texas. Nelson was traveling from California to his home near Austin when his bus pulled into a routine checkpoint operated by the U.S. Border Patrol in Sierra Blanca, Texas. Nelson, a co-chair of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) advisory board, told authorities the marijuana was his. If convicted of the possession charge, he could be sentenced to 180 days in the Hudspeth County jail. Following the arrest, Mickey Raphael, Nelson's longtime harmonica player, said the Country Music Hall of Fame member was in good spirits. "He said he feels great -- he lost six ounces," Raphael told Rolling Stone,

South Korean protesters demanding a harder line against neighbouring North Korea have on Saturday scuffled with police outside the defence ministry in the capital, Seoul.

Elsewhere in the city on Saturday, about 1,000 Marine veterans gathered, burning a North Korean flag along with a picture of Kim Jong-Il, the North Korean leader, and his son Kim Jong-un.

"There is a lot of nationalism now on the streets, particularly here in Seoul," Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas, reporting from the South Korean capital, said.

"The South Korean government has faced a lot of criticism for what many people see as their lacklustre performance in terms of retaliating for the North Korean attack.

"On the other hand there is also a large section of South Korea's population who think this all getting much too heated. What they want want is for the government to find another more peaceful way to re-engage with North Korea."

South Korea's Marine commander on Saturday vowed "thousand-fold" revenge on North Korea for the deadly bombardment of the island.

"All Marines, including Marines on service and reserve Marines, will avenge the two at any cost, keeping today's anger and hostility in mind," Lieutenant General Yoo Nak Joon said.

"We will put our feelings of rage and animosity in our bones and take our revenge on North Korea.
