Mexican Immigrants Portrayed as Multiplying “Rats”–White Official

Rep. Curry Todd remarked during a Fiscal Review Committee presentation this week that the idea of government-funded care for pregnant women [Mexican immigrants] who cannot prove they have United States government permission to be in this country struck him as not unlike inviting a rat infestation. The Collierville Republican made the comments after asking CoverKids program managers whether the state checks the citizenship status of care recipients. . . . [They] responded that CoverKids doesn’t provide medical coverage to pregnant women, but it does offer “unborn coverage …. ”Rep. Todd responded: “Well, they can go out there like rats and multiply, then, I guess.”


These comments have a strong resonance with aspects of old European and US white-racist framing of “undesirable” peoples seen as not white, and as vermin. There is the famous and viciously anti-Semitic film, The Eternal Jew (1940, Der ewige Jude in German), which was made under the control of Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels and directed by Fritz Hippler.
One summary of the film notes that early shots in it show

…a pack of rats emerging from a sewer, juxtaposed with a crowd of Jews in a bustling street of a Polish city. . . .

Black and Asian candidates face racism in Westminster, report finds
Black and Asian people hoping to become MPs face “outright racism” as they struggle to overcome “dinosaur attitudes” among party activists, a report has warned.

In one case a local councillor told a parliamentary candidate, “people like you clean toilets at Heathrow”, while another prospective MP was regularly “marched out” to defend the party against allegations of racism.
The study from Quilliam, the counter-extremism think tank, warned all three major parties that they must work harder to eliminate prejudice from Westminster politics.
Researchers conducted 70 in-depth interviews with MPs, parliamentary candidates, councillors and party members, for the report, Skin-Deep ・・・・・


One candidate, from a minority background, told the researchers: “A councillor in my local area said to me ‘you’ve come a long way my dear – isn’t it wonderful you’ve been elected [as councillor]? People like you clean toilets in Heathrow’.
“The [local party] officers know about this man and his views – he’s a known bully – but they don’t understand why I’m being so sensitive.”
An Asian candidate described appearing at a selection panel for a predominantly white parliamentary seat as an “absolutely horrific” experience, adding: “Those at the selection were white, middle class, and sneering.”
Another told the researchers that the local party chairman “took me aside and said that they wanted me to stand down because of my gender and my ethnicity”.
More commonly, candidates from ethnic and religious minorities found themselves “pigeonholed” and were deployed in the media to prove that their parties were not racist, the report said.

A PRISONER in a high security jail says he has been subjected to racist abuse.

About 70 family and supporters of Jaslyn Smith, from Oldbury, in the West Midlands, staged a protest outside Frankland Prison, on the outskirts of Durham City, on Saturday afternoon.

Smith is serving a life sentence imposed in 1999 for rape, which he denied, having previously served a 30-month jail sentence for wounding.

新作映画『The Kids Are All Right』という映画について。

In the film, sperm donor Paul is a laid-back, free-spirited organic smallholder. He's heavily typecast as a "cool guy", and what better way to validate his liberal credentials than to introduce him with his black girlfriend.

From the beginning their pairing is painted as a passionate affair between two similar souls. But, as is so common with on-screen mixed-race unions in American television and cinema, it's not to last. As soon as Paul decides he wants to settle down and do love for real, he dumps her.

　”白人”と”黒人”のカップルは最後には別れる、というのがハリウッドやアメリカのテレビではおきまりになっているようだが、いかがなものか？と。

　日本のドラマを見なくなって久しいが、こうしたのを是非やって欲しい。

　上記映画はレズビアンの女性の二人の親と、その子供という設定、また、”白人”と”黒人”のカップルという設定がある。このカップルが別れてしまう、ということを問題にしているが、しかし、設定自体は面白いだろう。

　ドラマの筋書きなんて似たりよったりだから、こうした設定の段階でひねりをいれておくと、あとはわりにスムースに葛藤やらなにやら悲劇でも喜劇でもできやすいのではないか？

　日本人とイスラム教徒、あるいは、日本人と”黒人”のカップルあるいは、両親などの設定にすれば面白いと思うし、教育的効果もある、と思う。

　他の先進国から学ぶことは多い。しかし、単純な手本にならないことが、日本の転換を遅滞させている一つの要因かもしれない。

　大きな転換なら時間がかかるのも致し方あるまい。

There is something factually incorrect in his Japanese letter.

It says "改めて、人種・身元によるイジメであったことも報道して下さい。"

Now it might have been better for NHK to report what the father said, but still any journalist cannot conclude from what he says and report categorically that it was a bully due to race (and "mimoto?"--whatever that means in this context). But that is what he is demanding here in Japanese.

And note that even in the case that might have been related to the race, it is not uncommon not to mention this factor in the report.

Debito goes too far but no member try to stop it, blocking the comments form people with common sense. that's the big problem.

To illustrate the point, take syukenkaifuku no kai for instance. It has a good purpose for some people ; Restoring Japan.(Japanese Glen Beck) There are some elements of the truth in what they say. But overall they went too far, filed with lies and hyperbolic statements.

I take it that you mean generalizations with negative tone about Japan and the Japanese people by "generalizations". In other words, he often makes negative stereotypical and hyperbolic statements.

And there are many factually incorrect comments. Even on the post in question, there is a false statement such as NoriK's (#23)

Nobody check it, and he blocks the comments as he likes.

So just as sykenkaifuku no kai is looked upon as an hate group regardless of upholding a good cause, Debito's blog tend to be regarded as a hate blog. Mentioning a good cause does not make it a good discussion.

We might agree to disagree, but that's what I take his blog. And my hope is the relation between the Japanese and people from some other nations goes well. I think he is deteriorating it rather than promoting it.

In this case the parents sued the bullies and Tokyo and they won the compensation. And there were a good deal of news on it.

I wonder why people who claim to live in Japan so long like Debito cannot answer the question such as AJ's (# 33)

Perhaps you don't know what to tell because you are not ready to back up your claim? You are projecting your own prejudice upon Japanese people. No? I am not saying there are no prejudice against these people among the Japanese, but honestly it really depends and I can say there are less prejudice against black people partly because the we have much less history with black people. I'd say the Japanese prejudice against black people comes largely from Hollywood and some media from the West. So it is safe to say the set of prejudice is much smaller than the set of prejudice you have.

In all my time in Japan, I never met a biracial child who said they had never experienced any bullying based on race.

How many biracial chidren did you meet?

Sure I have read the cases where there are ijime due to race, but there are cases where the kids claim there were no ijime due to race.

　１４日午前１時５０分ごろ、福井市日光２丁目のマンション駐車場でブラジル国籍の男性会社員（４９）のワゴン車から出火、エンジン付近や車内の一部が焼けた。けが人はなかった。福井県警によると、車に外国人を中傷する内容の紙が張られていたという。福井市では９月上旬から、外国人の乗用車や料理店を狙った不審火が続いており、今回で４件目。福井署は放火事件とみて調べている。

　同署によると、９月１０日未明、ポルトガル人が所有する乗用車が火事になり、同じ時間帯に現場から約３００メートル離れたインド料理店の旗や植え込みが焼けた。１０月２０日未明には、イスラム教礼拝所「福井モスク」前にとめたマレーシア人の乗用車の一部が焼けている。インド料理店と礼拝所に「外人　ｇｅｔ　ｏｕｔ（出て行け）」と書かれた紙が張られていたという

以前の事件＊と同一犯の可能性が高いな。

不審火の現場

　９月１０日未明、福井県福井市のインド料理店で起きた火事の現場に、外国人を排斥する内容の言葉を書いた紙が残っていたことが２１日、捜査関係者らへの取材で分かった。２０日深夜、同市のイスラム教礼拝所で起きた火事の現場に残されていたものと同じ内容。また、料理店の火事が起きた同じ時間帯に、近くで外国人が所有する車が燃える火事も起きていた。外国人の周辺を狙った連続不審火の可能性があり、県警は慎重に関連を調べている。

　同市学園２丁目にあるインド料理店の火事は９月１０日未明に発生、店の外壁にあった旗などが燃えた。旗にはインドの国旗やマハトマ・ガンジーの顔があしらわれていた。店のドアには紙が張られ、「外国人出て行け」などの内容が日本語と英語で書かれていた。

　この店は４０代の中国人女性がオーナー。３０、４０代のインド人男性２人がコックとして働いている。４年前に開業し、これまで特にトラブルはなかったという。

　インド料理店の火事と同時間帯の１０日午前１時４０分ごろ、直線で約３００メートル離れた同市光陽３丁目の住宅前の駐車場で乗用車の燃える火事があった。持ち主はこの家に住むポルトガル出身の５０代女性。車内にはポルトガル国旗をあしらった飾りがあった。女性によると、外国人を排斥する内容の紙はなかったという。

　女性は「外国人を嫌いな人の犯行だろう。またやられたらと思うと恐ろしい」と話した。

　インド料理店の３人や女性はイスラム教とは関係がないという。残された紙に書かれていた言葉はイスラム教を名指ししておらず、特定の国や宗教が対象ではなく、外国人を無差別に狙った可能性がある。県警は３件の火事について連続不審火も視野に入れ、慎重に関連を調べている。
