But Indonesia’s brand of Islam is more moderate than that practiced in other Muslim states where Islamic extremists have been able to recruit. Though some militant groups have attempted to impose sharia law, they have gained little traction in Indonesia. Yudhoyono’s government presides over a mix of secular and Islamic minority groups that are largely peaceful.

A grandmother who has lived in Britain since she was six months old is facing deportation in a bizarre passport dispute.
Joan Wakely, 65, has been branded an illegal immigrant, even though she and her husband have brought up three children and two grandchildren in the UK, and she has paid taxes all her working life.
She is facing a battle to stay in the country and could be deported in February after officials stopped her at passport control and found no record of her being a British citizen.
Mrs Wakely, who claims she is British, was born in Vancouver to an English mother and Canadian father, a sailor who returned to his home country after the Second World War.
Six months later the family moved to England and settled in Shaftesbury, Dorset.
Mrs Wakely says she assumed her parents had registered her as a British citizen, though she travels abroad on her Canadian passport.
She has been to Canada, Israel and across Europe, all without incident.
However when she returned to Gatwick airport earlier this year with British husband Mike, after a trip to Florida, she was pulled aside by immigration officials.

In order to remain here permanently Mrs Wakely must pay ￡840 and pass a test for full UK citizenship, although there is no guarantee her application will be accepted.
She has no home or family in Canada, where she would be sent if her application is rejected.

Ministers pave the way for easier integration of immigrant children

Under the plans, children aged 15 years and older, who have successfully attended school in Germany for at least six years and who speak good German, should be granted the right to stay in the country, even if their parents are not.

While the opposition Greens welcomed the proposals as step in the right direction, the Left Party's interior affairs expert Ulla Jelpke called the plans "inhumane". She said that they could lead to families being split up, because the parents could still be deported, even if their children become permanent residents.

At present, children of immigrant parents are not treated separately from their parents. If the parents are not allowed to stay, neither are their children.

A political campaign video that compares voting to a sexual experience has caused outrage in Spain.
The video produced for the youth wing of the Catalan Socialist Party shows a young woman who is so excited by casting her ballot that she has an orgasm in front of a group of bemused polling officers.
The advert concludes with the phrase, "Voting is a pleasure", after she puts her voting slip in the ballot box.

The man who spearheaded Silvio Berlusconi's entry into politics was also an intermediary between the media magnate and the Sicilian mafia, judges in Palermo ruled last night.

In a lengthy written judgment on one of the Italian prime minister's closest associates, the judges said that before entering politics Berlusconi paid "enormous sums of money" to Cosa Nostra for protection and later handed over funds to safeguard his network's relay stations on Sicily.

これだけの結構な話だと思うが、しかし、米国の利益のために、という限定がついている。

目を細めて青草をほおばる京都市動物園のニシゴリラのゲンキは、同園生まれの２４歳のメス。２年前まで食べたえさを吐いてはまた食べる「吐き戻し」がひどかった。原因は「栄養満点の食事」によるストレスだった。

　野生のニシゴリラは、硬くて水分や栄養価が少ないイチジクやクズウコンなどを食べ、一日の大半を採食行動に使う。ゲンキはバナナやパン、ヨーグルトなど、軟らかくて甘い果物や加工品を中心とした食事だった。その結果、短時間でえさを食べ尽くしてしまい、時間を持て余していた。

　ま、日本もこれから、少子高齢化に、経済不況に、食糧不足、となるかもしれない。
　頭を悩ますより、今のうちから、粗食で元気でいられるように訓練しておくべきかもしれない。

11月2日づけの投稿なのでちょっと古いかもしれませんが、偶然みつけた。

CNNの日本報道を批評してます。
ハロウィーンについてですが、そもそも、日本ではそれほどハロウィーンというのは定着していない。

ところが、なぜか、

The Japanese have taken Halloween to over-enthusiastic heart. Consumers can now buy Halloween Bento boxes and seasonal pumpkin-flavored Kit Kat bars. Bizarre, horrifying and -- above all -- sexy costumes have become a national pastime.

　ハロウィーンでセクシーコスチュームを着るのが、国民的余暇になっている、と。

　他にもブログの論者はCNN記事のおかしなところを指摘してくれているようですが、ありがたいことです。


　CNNの報道はKyn Lah の報道といい、ひどいものが多い。

　これらは日本報道に関してですけど、日本報道に関してこれほどひどいと他国の報道に関しても推して知るべし、というところではないでしょうか？


　CNN関係の情報に金を払っている方があれば、それはお金をドブに捨てるようなもの。

　CNN報道陣もきっと馬鹿ばっかでしょう。かかわらない方がいい。

　既存のメディアの凋落をみるのも悲しいものもあります。

Like Yubari, Japan is heading into a demographic vortex. It is the fastest-ageing society on Earth and the first big country in history to have started shrinking rapidly from natural causes. Its median age (44) and life expectancy (83) are among the highest and its birth rate (1.4 per woman) is among the lowest anywhere. In the next 40 years its population, currently 127m, is expected to fall by 38m. By 2050 four out of ten Japanese will be over 65.
Like Yubari, Japan is also deeply in debt. But whereas Yubari’s fiscal problems arose from a huge public-spending splurge aimed at wooing back its young people (at one point it had an international film festival and 17 cinemas), Japan at the start of its journey into the demographic unknown already has one of the highest debt-to-GDP ratios in the world

頼みは外国人…アキバに大型免税専門店が林立

１９日にオープンしたソフマップの免税専門店＝吉岡毅撮影
　ビックカメラの子会社・パソコン販売大手ソフマップは１９日、東京・秋葉原に、訪日外国人向けの大型免税専門店をオープンした。

　郊外の量販店との競争に苦しむ電器店は、「アキハバラ」を目指す外国人観光客の取り込みで再生を目指している。

　ソフマップは、７階建ての「秋葉原パソコン総合館」を改装し、１～４階部分を免税専門店としてオープンした。デジタルカメラや炊飯器など海外仕様の家電を販売する。

　中国企業傘下のラオックスの店舗に次ぐ大型の免税専門店で、国内資本では秋葉原で最大規模という。

　店内には中国語で「歓迎光臨（いらっしゃいませ）」と書かれたポスターがあちこちに張られ、十数人の販売員のほとんどが英語や中国語、韓国語を話す

　ということであるが、しかし、他方なんで大手メディアは、

　こうした排外主義的な活動を無視つづけるのだろう？

　海外特派員は注目する。注目するのは、必ずしも、日本のためを思って注目するわけではないが、しかし、日本の大手メディアも日本のためを思うなら、積極的にこうした問題も報道して問題提起していくべきだろう。
　
　

ネットに「戦争犯罪人」リスト　イスラエル兵の情報流出

　【エルサレム＝井上道夫】２００８年末から０９年１月中旬まで続いたパレスチナ自治区ガザへの大規模攻撃に従軍したとされるイスラエル軍幹部や兵士の名前、生年月日などの個人情報が、インターネット上に流出したことが分かった。公にされていない一般兵士の所属部隊、階級などの情報もあり、軍内部から漏れた可能性が高い。
