Debito.org attracts a lot of different young people, but I think that’s the key word: they’re young. They have political fire in their bellies and they don’t appreciate anyone telling them to study all the empirical evidence and weigh it carefully before making broad judgments. Conflict and shock value prevail; analysis is boring. If they want to go into battle guns blazing, if they want to feel like they’re useful now rather than thoughtful later, if they want to post seemingly derogatory/racist/bigoted/myopic/ill-prepared comments right away about “Japan” on a blog, most of them seem to think it’s okay. Shoot first, ask questions later. Japan is a democracy with free speech. “It’s all about me, me, me, and my feelings as victim.” And you know what? Generally, they’re right. They can say whatever they want. But here’s the funny part: what happens if shooting from the hip isn’t politically effective? What then? Debito Arudou can’t afford to admit it publicly, but I sense that he’s very frustrated that he has little to show for his activist efforts to date. He’s not being invited to Tokyo to consult with the government unlike other non-Japanese. Many (most?) well-known writers and academics, as well as Japanese politicians and bureaucrats, continue to ignore his work. And those few well-known or respected authors that do acknowledge his existence on the internet, with one or two minor exceptions, only do it to criticize his tactics, too. If I were him, I would be disappointed that after 15 years of agitating the public, this is what I’m left with: internet supporters with names like “PKU”, “Tacit Blue,” and “Peach.” Why else would he feel the need to post FaceBook messages from his private account onto a public website, after Ken Joseph, Jr., had already apologized? He needs to prove that he matters.

有道ブログは若者を惹きつけているが、それは若者が思慮深くあるよりも、なんかの役に立ちたいと血気盛んで、経験的な証拠集めて、衡量しながら、判断するよりも、対立や刺激に惹かれているのだ、と。
ただ、ときどきいい年したおじさんおばさんも賛同しているようなのが懸念材料ではある。
（無論、日本の極端に走る集団も同じであるが・・・）

Have you guys at Tepido noticed that a number of Debito supporters seem to have a very binary view of Debito-ish topics? Such as, if one criticizes the veracity of some of Debito’s claims regarding alleged examples of anti NJ racism or xenophobia- that you are therefore ‘in denial’, trying to sweep racism under the rug or even that you must have been compromised by the man..
This denial thing is of course the ultimate dogmatic non-argument: “If you disagree with me it is because you are in denial about the truth”. It ranks up there in the ‘popular auto-response’ stakes with the ‘apologist’ mantra you might get saddled with for the temerity of stating that there is much you like about this country. Go figure.
で、これは、有道氏を支持する人は有道氏の主張を否定すると、日本の差別や外人嫌いの傾向を否定しているかのような二項的な発想しかないのはいかがなものか、と。これは、うまいですね。主張していないことを主張しているといって、そこを攻撃する一種の
藁人形論法の誤謬を指摘しているわけですね。こうして相手の議論を分析し、反論する、というのはさすがで、やはり、大人の議論でしょう。
日本では、偉そうに哲学者の名前を引用したりして、権威ぶった話しぶりをするインテリがいるが、あまり信頼できない。大物の名前を出さなくても、緻密な議論ができる人は、さすが、と思う。
で、久しぶりにDavid Chartさんのブログをのぞいてみる。

Sitting on Trains
As I have mentioned before, there is a rumour on the internet that Japanese people will refuse to sit next to obvious foreigners on trains, even when the train is very crowded. As I have also mentioned before, I see no evidence that this is true. Today, I wish to report further evidence.
電車のなかで外国人は避けられるという噂があるが、彼の場合にはそういったことはなかった、と。お子さんが電車のなかで吐いても、外国人である彼の席にはちゃんと人が座っていた、と。
そうだろうなああ、と思う。
もちろん、避けられるという経験があった外国人をすべて否定するわけでもない。あって不愉快な思いをした人はいるだろう。しかし、少なくとも個人的には、東京ではみたことがない。
で、この方のブログをちょろちょろのぞいてみるおもしろい。

ここらへんが面白いですね。日本人にしっくりする宗教観ではないでしょうか？そして、これくらいだと、あまり宗教間で、喧嘩もおきない、かつ、誕生は神道で、結婚式はキリスト教で、葬式は仏教で、という形態もあり、ということになりましょう。
尖閣諸島映像流出

昨日まで流出したと名乗った海上保安官が任意で事情を調べられたとよく言われるが、保安官のコメントが報道されると、「家に帰れないのは仕方ない」のような内容があった。任意の捜査であれば、いつでも帰ってもいいはずだ。帰るわけにはいかない状況になったら、それは勾留と変わらないだろう。そうであれば、検察側が逮捕すべきなのではないか。・・・・・
これも非常に常識的な反応ですね。
まさに、保安官の弁護士が当初主張していたことです。

多分、日本の刑訴の議論はご存じなかったと思いますが、非常に安定した前提と推論で、しっかりした結論を導きやはり、大人の議論といったところでしょうね。
やはり、こうした外国出身の方々活躍してくれた方が在日外国人のイメージ向上にも友好にもつながる。
ぼくがいうのもなんですが、英語版もわりに平易な英語で書かれていますし、題材もおもしろそうなのも沢山ありますのでみなさんものぞいてみたらどうでしょうか？

Yeah I think that everybody who has worked long term in Japan knows that the hard work story is a myth. Its not hard work, its obligation. It squashes imagination and individualism, two things Japan really need to moved forward. Ok, so you bring back the military. Your bringing back the same mind numbing, mind control shit that we see a residue of today. Its just what the uyoku and other facist want. Conscription isnt what Japan needs. What they need is to get rid of the old guard and the wishful thinking of glory days in the bubble economy. I see scary things for Japans future with China becoming stronger and Japan moving backwards.

勤勉な日本人というのは作り話。あれは義務なだけ。想像力と個人主義を粉砕し、日本の進歩を妨げる。それで、軍隊を復活させ、精神を麻痺させ、マインドコントロールをする。右翼やその他の全体主義者が欲しているものだ、云々。
なんていうか・・・・ですな。上記、血気盛んな若者のタイプなのでしょう。
（それでも英語で書かれたり、言われたりすると、真に受ける日本人がいるのが情けない、ところですが・・・議論の主張と論拠を分解して分析するのも大人の議論のための面白い練習になるかもしれませんね。）

A presidential visit to Hiroshima would likely be politically unpopular back home. Americans, memories of the brutal Pacific war lingering in their minds, have balked at previous such gestures that emphasized Japanese victimhood. A 1995 Smithsonian museum exhibition on the Enola Gay aircraft, which dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, infuriated veterans and was condemned by Congress. They argued that the exhibit was overly sympathetic to Japan and overly critical of U.S. actions that they said liberated the people of Asia from the horrors of Japanese occupation, ended a terrible war, and saved perhaps hundreds of thousands of both American and Japanese lives.
These aren't only the dogma of the Tea Party extreme but are mainstream American views. Ambassador Roos's visit to Hiroshima attracted this kind of criticism. Gene Tibbets, son of Enola Gay pilot Brig. Gen. Paul Tibbets, lamented the visit as an "unspoken apology" to Japan. "They hit Pearl Harbor, they struck us. We didn't slaughter the Japanese -- we stopped the war." In the Wall Street Journal, journalist Warren Kozak warned of moral equivalence, telling Americans of the "inconvenient truth that Japan started the war in the first place" and had been "bent on global conquest and the destruction of people who did not fit their bizarre racial theories."

日本と米国の原爆投下に関する和解。
ご存じだと思いますが、一応言っておきますと、不当であった、という少数派も日本以上に頑張っていますが、原爆投下は正当であったというのが、右翼だけでなくほぼ一般の意見のようです。日本による、パールハーバーやその他の捕虜虐殺と絡めると日米関係が政治的にひっちゃかめっちゃかになってしまう恐れもある。
そこで、和解のありかたとして、
１）歴史問題は放置する
あるいは、
２）加害者・被害者という関係より、共通の損害に焦点をあてる。
あるいは、
３）日本の民主主義など日米共同の成果に焦点をあてる
ことによって和解を達成する、選択肢が提案されている。
ぼくもこの象徴政治の意義がよくわからないのだが、ぼくはmozuさんと違って意地悪ですから、こうした歴史問題に関する国際的な潮流がある以上、積極的な攻勢はとらないにせよ、どんな形でも、一応駒として持っておくのもいいかな、と、意地悪く思ったりみたりしている。
朝日でも世論調査がでた。
内閣支持２７％に急落 外交評価低く 朝日新聞世論調査

朝日新聞社が１３、１４の両日実施した全国世論調査（電話）によると、菅直人内閣の支持率は２７％で、前回調査（１０月５、６日）の４５％から急落した。不支持率は５２％（前回３６％）。外交への取り組みや北方領土問題への対応を「評価しない」とする人がいずれも７割を超え、主に外交面での低い評価が支持率低下につながったようだ。
世論調査―質問と回答〈１１月１３、１４日実施〉
菅内閣の支持率が３割を切るのは、６月の内閣発足後初めて。不支持率もこれまでで最も高くなったが、衆院の解散総選挙については「できるだけ早く実施すべきだ」３１％を「急ぐ必要はない」６０％が大きく上回っている。
政権に対する不満が昂じれば、解散をすべきだ、という声も大きくならざるえない。
やはり、菅直人の指導力がみえない。指導力を見限られると大衆は軽蔑の眼差しを送るだけだ。
仙谷氏が自覚してくれば、すこしは違ってくるかも知れないと思うが・・・・
異例…仙谷氏、官邸以外の首脳会談に同席
首相官邸以外の場所で行われる首脳会談に、官房長官が出席するのは異例だ。明文化された規定はないものの、首相が官邸のある都内を離れる場合は、官房長官が留守番役として東京都内にとどまり、危機対応に備えるのが事実上の慣例となっている。
