Thinking by numbers

Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.

I conducted a business training for young employees in one company.
The subject was “Thinking by numbers”.

When you speak to your boss, if you say just “I will try to do
my best.”, your intention will not convey to him.
You should explain by using specific numbers.

There are many kinds of numbers when we work.
For example, amount of money, time, number of people, number of times,
average, percentage of growth, and so on.

Also, I explained about SD yesterday.
SD is short for Standard Deviation.
Deviation means how big is the difference from average.
It seemed that SD was a new piece of knowledge for the participants.

Anyway, thinking logically by using several data is important.

Leylah again

Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.

She is a super girl!
It’s about Leyla Fernandez, who is 19 year old professional tennis
player.
Yesterday, she beat world No.5 Elina Svitolina and proceeded to the
semi-final in the US Open Tennis Tournament.

It doesn’t seem she has pressure.
She plays as she wants to do.
Since she is a newcomer, she has nothing to lose.

Her next opponent will be world No.2 Aryna Sabalenka.
I’m looking forward to watching the next match.

Far and Away

Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.

I watched an American movie titled “Far and Away” through
the Amazon Prime service.

This movie was made about 30 years ago, in 1992.
Young Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were the main actor and actress.

The first scene was in a local area in West Ireland in 19th Century.
Tom acted Joseph who was a son of a poor farmer’s family.
Nicole acted Shannon who was a daughter of a rich landlord’s family.

Shannon wanted to run away from her home because it was a boring life.
She planned to go to America as there was land being given away
for free there.
She asked Joseph to go with her.
Joseph also wanted to get his own land and agreed with her idea.

They traveled to Boston in America and started their life.
They had a big dream but the reality was not so nice.
They pretended to be brother and sister and lived in one room.
They worked hard but were not able to save enough money.

They often quarreled although they were truly attracted to each other.
After some happenings, they separated.

A few months later, they met again in Oklahoma.
They joined the land race to get land for free.
At last, they confessed their true feelings and were united.

In reality, Tom and Nicole got married and divorced.
Anyway, the movie was interesting.

Leylah Fernandez

Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.

In The US Open Tennis Tournament, she did again.
She is Leylah Fernandez from Canada.
She is still 19 years old and not known yet.

In the 3rd round, she defeated Naomi Osaka, who was the defending
champion in this tournament.

And yesterday, she topped Angelique Kerber, who was also a former
champion in this tournament.
She joined the Gland Slam tournament for the first time and
proceeded to the semi-quarter finals so far.
It’s amazing!

A few days ago, my English teacher from the Philippines told me
that Leylah is a typical Filipino name.
I checked about her and understood it because her mother was
a Filipino Canadian.

Anyway, I am looking forward to watching her next game.

Nishikori again

Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.

In The US Open Tennis Tournament, Kei Nishikori proceeded to
the third round.
His opponent was Novak Djokovic who is considered the No1
in the world.

They played many games in the past but Kei seldom won against him.
In July this year, they played in Tokyo Olympics and Kei had
a hard time playing with him.

But yesterday, Kei played very well.
The first set was a tie-break and Kei got the first set.

From the second set, Djokovic tidied up his tennis.
Eventually, he got the second, third, fourth set and won the game.

After the game, Djokovic said Kei played tennis extremely well
today in the interview.

I am looking forward to watching Kei’s next games.
