I was born in 1956 and was a fifth-grader in elementary school, and was part of the animal care committee.I was on duty at the time, picking chickweed, which we called chick grass, for the rabbits that were kept in the rabbit shed at my elementary school, which was about a 30-minute walk from my house.During summer holidays and onwards, I would go to look after the rabbits, including cleaning the shed.
It's unthinkable in this day and age, but on my day off, a girl of about 10 years old was walking alone along a country road picking chickweed for the rabbits the school kept.
It's a cherished childhood memory, and every time I see this plant in the future, I'll be reminded of my innocent childhood.
