アメリカ出身の講師の経験から、日本人は時制が正しく言えないことが多いそうです。
例えば、I play baseball yesterday. と言われると　現在形なので、習慣など現在形の話と思って聞いていたら最後に過去形だったと分かると大変混乱するそうです。
Yesterday,I play baseball. と言われると、「昨日野球をした」（でも文法を間違えたんだな）と想像できるのだそうです。
また、一般の会話では、実際、時間状況(yesterday, today, tomorrow)などを最初にもってきて話し始めることもよくあります
