Weblog
Tepido

Or ask Agnes Lum how she felt being told “Oh thank goodness, I thought you might be hafu”.

It has taken a long time for genuinely multicultural societies like the US to find a new social etiquette and it’s still a work in progress. I don’t think anyone should lambast Japan for not having already developed well-rounded social responses to a situation the country is only now beginning to confront.

US Senate leader Harry Reid rejects resignation calls

Racially insensitive remarks he made privately about President Barack Obama appeared in a new book.

Senator Reid has apologised for saying two years ago that America would accept Mr Obama because he is "light skinned" and doesn't have a "negro dialect".

They found people of both races living just blocks apart who nonetheless spoke of each other like strangers. There was suspicion, contempt

Whites say their neighbors consider blacks to be violent and solely responsible for problems in the black community.

Blacks say many of their own consider whites to be spoiled and condescending.

Four of every 10 white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks, calling them "lazy," or "violent" or blaming them for the ills of black America, according to the AP-Yahoo poll. Such surveys draw criticism from whites who say the numbers are exaggerated and from blacks who say the numbers are too low.

"My kids have been called nigger babies. ... That was from a white family," says Cherlonda Hampton, a black woman shopping at an outdoor mall on 8 Mile Road.

A petite mother of nine who looks half her 37 years, Hampton says she was harassed by whites while living in suburban Detroit. Feces were smeared on her car. A dead bird was left on a tire. When her child was bitten by a white classmate, the white principal didn't seem to care.

Obama has said, "I identify as African-American - that's how I'm treated and that's how I'm viewed. I'm proud of it."

"We do not have our first black president," the author Christopher Hitchens said on the BBC program "Newsnight." "He is not black. He is as black as he is white."

A Doonesbury comic strip that ran the day after the election showed several soldiers celebrating.

"He's half-white, you know," says a white soldier.

"You must be so proud," responds another.

Pride is the center of racial identity, and some white people seem insulted by a perception that Obama is rejecting his white mother (even though her family was a centerpiece of his campaign image-making) or baffled by the notion that someone would choose to be black instead of half-white

Half-white is an insult

In Britain, Obama's victory has exposed a predominantly white minority's inherent suspicion and mistrust of black people. Christopher Hitchens, appearing on Newsnight last week, declared: "We do not have our first black president. He is not black. He is as black as he is white. He is not full black." Rod Liddle, writing in the current edition of the Spectator under the headline "Is Barack Obama really black?", suggested that "coloured" - a term of reference used in apartheid South Africa - would be more appropriate.

Courage, Savoie ! Japaneses are stubborn, but they fail in front of somebody really decided to reach his aim. That’s what has been seen in the case of the poor english teacher Hawker killed by Ichihashi, a maniac who was after that on the run for two years. Without the superb will of Hawker’s parents, I’m sure the japanese police would have give up. The trial of Ichihashi is clearly the victory of the Hawker family who went several times to remind the police to do their work. They spoke to the medias, it upsetted the police and a lot of japaneses who named them “shitsukoi”… Nice people ! Their daughtey had been raped, tortured and killed, but this nice english familiy was “shitsukoi”. Damn !

By the way, I remark you are a real gentleman, because there are tons of people here in Japan, who would have paid some yakuzas to “reach an agreement” in no time. That’s not you, congratulation.

I don’t think they should criminalize hate speech in Japan. Better the snake that you can see than the snake that you can’t see. By the same token, I don’t think anyone should run around asking the Japanese to take their “Japanese Only” signs. I would prefer a document-able form of discrimination that can, for example, be shown to American, and other foreign consumers so that they can consider it when making their purchasing decisions. Would you buy a car from someone whom you knew thought they were too good to sit next to you on the train? I, for one, after being discriminated against by many, many Japanese, will never buy another Japanese product.

This is not a personal slam at Debito, rather my opinion about the way the problem should be approached.

I think that DR is basically right. When the economy was good (and this feeds back to Buckeys column), these kinds of nationalists felt that they had lost the war (in which few of them had actually taken part), but won the peace. Now that Japans economy is terminal (a la ‘burning platform’ theory), they can’t even feel smug about being number 1 in asia (never mind the world).
The rise of this kind of over-simplistic world-view that the nationalists have, will mirror Japans increasing economic irrelevance in the world. A kind of ‘loss of national prestige’ anxiety.
Of course, never great on self-criticism, many will choose to blame the outsider NJ. To be honest, Japan has only got itself to blame. They built an economy based on ever-increasing shares in overseas markets, and when the markets went bad, there was a complete failure to take responsibility for that (eg: Evil American govt. trying to ‘stitch up’ Toyota to help the US auto industry narrative).

While we are on the subject of nationalists, the UK’s BNP poster boy Adam Walker spent 6 years as an English teacher in Japan, where he was so impressed (presumably) by the racism that he was subjected to, that after marrying his Japanese GF, he went back to the UK and became a politician in a neo-nazi style party.
It’s almost as if Japans new export is racial discrimination.

Former Klan Leader David Duke Looks Into Presidency

6 Jul 2011 09:36 AM EST
- by David Guzman, Assistant Editor

Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke will embark on a 25-state tour this month to gauge support for a presidential bid in 2012, The Daily Beast reported Monday.

The self-described “white civil-rights advocate,” who ran for president in 1988 as a Democrat and 1992 as a Republican, is reportedly looking into campaigning with the Republicans again. Duke, an opponent of everything from affirmative action to Zionism, ran as a Republican when Louisiana voters elected him to a two-year term in the House of Representatives, which began in 1990.

Despite publishing xenophobic literature and posting racist material on his Web site, Duke claimed he has nothing against minorities.

“I have no hatred of anyone,” he said. “Just a love of my heritage.”

Duke isn’t the only white supremacist involved with politics, either. John Abarr, another Klan leader, is trying to become congressman in Montana. “White people need to wake up to the fact that we’re becoming a minority in our country,” Abarr said. “We already have a black president, and I’m not sure when we’ll have a white president elected again.”

A white supremacist will be executed on Wednesday for killing an Indian man in a string of hate crimes in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
Mark Anthony Stroman, who is on death row in Texas, said the spree, in which he also shot dead a Pakistani man and severely wounded a Bangladeshi man, was fuelled by 'patriotism'.
He said that he believed his targets were of Middle Eastern background and that after 9/11, the U.S. government 'hadn't done their job, so he was going to do it for them'.

Update: Chattanooga Police Claim They Have “Shocking” Video Of Racial Attack On Black Nighbourhood

Police Chief Bobby Dodd said the Chattanooga Housing Authority on Thursday turned over to him a video of the early morning July 9 incident in which three young white males allegedly set off fireworks and yelled racist remarks at East Lake Courts.

Chief Dodd said the FBI is also investigating the incident, and he expects federal authorities to take the case against Colton Partin, James Smiley and Kyle Montgomery.

They are currently out on bail pending a preliminary hearing.

The CHA video shows a white pickup truck that is headed north on Fourth Avenue pull up in front of the black housing development, it was stated.

Chief Dodd said they are shown with fireworks similar to a Roman Candle. “Instead of aiming it in the sky like you are suppose to, they aimed it at the building,” he stated.

Chief Dodd said a large explosion is shown going off within feet of one person with several others nearby on a porch.

British Teacher Avoids Ban Despite Racial Slurs About Obama & Jews

A teacher in Britain who made racist comments and branded US President Barack Obama a n****** in front of a class of children as young as 15 has astonishingly been allowed to go back into the classroom.

Maths teacher Michael Webb, who also made anti-Jewish comments in the Cambridge classroom, escaped a ban despite being found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct by a teaching body.

I call my coloured friends n***** and they call me white honkey,” said Webb.

Webb also ranted about Obama, telling pupils, ”I ain”t having no f****** n***** tell me what to do.”

Webb also said that he ‘didn’t particularly like Jews’

Illegal immigrants to pay for own deportation

Friday 01 July 2011

Illegal immigrants who refuse to leave the country voluntarily will have to pay for their forced deportations, under new immigration ministry plans, the Telegraaf reports.

The cost of plane tickets, official documents and the transport of personal possessions will have to be paid before the deportation takes place. If the deportee has no money, his or her employer and family members will be billed instead, the minister says.

Immigration minister Gerd Leers is also planning to set up special, ‘more sober’ accommodation for families with children who face deportation, the paper says.

Studio Ghibli: Leave the boys behind

There are similarly subtle erotic and sexual subtexts throughout Ghibli's films. Kiki's Delivery Service, for example, centres on a 13-year-old witch who, like Arrietty, is just approaching adolescence. In her travels, Kiki encounters all ages of womanhood, each of whose sexualities is hinted at through metaphors involving fire and flames.

Children and sexuality are well off‑limits in western culture as a whole, but in these films, it's a fact of life, with no associated perversity. "It is really difficult for any of us in a western tradition to acknowledge how powerful the sexual feelings of children are," McCarthy says. "One of the wonderful things Studio Ghibli do is they recognise and accept that children are adults in miniature.
