【友人の持ち物、服を褒める】
あなたのセーターの色はいいですね------> I like the color of your sweater.
その色はいいですね-------> I like that color.
* I like your color. と言わないように!これはあなたの皮膚の色のことを言っていることになり大変失礼な表現になります
新しく見えますね-----> It looks new.
それは新しいですか------> Is it new?
高そうですね------> It looks expensive.
どこで買いましたか(手に入れましたか)------> Where did you buy it? / Where did you get it?
【instead of・ ~の代わりに】
今日の代わりに明日会いましょう-----> Instead of today, shall we meet tomorrow?
今日は紅茶の代わりに私はコーヒーを注文するつもりです----> Today, instead of tea, I'm going to order coffee.
夫が熱があったので彼の代わりに彼の友人の葬儀に参列しました-----> Since my husband had a fever, I attended his friend's funeral instead of him.
夕食を作る代わりに私はレストランへ行きます-----> Instead of cooking dinner, I'll go to a restaurant.
ミネラルウォーターの代わりに私は日本茶をこのクラスへ持ってきました----> Instead of mineral water, I brought Japanese tea to this class.
私はとても忙しいです。今日、私の代わりに働いてくださいますか----> I'm very busy. Would you please work today instead of me?

【besides ~以外に】
パーティーではお茶のほかにコーヒーも飲みました-----> At the party, besides tea I drunk coffee, too.
この箱には本のほかに靴も入っている-----> In this box, besides books there are shoes.
昨日、私は東京へ買い物をするために行った、そしてそれ以外に友人に会った-----> Yesterday, I went to Tokyo to shop and besides that I met my friend.
* shop は動詞として to shop として使っている。I went shopping.は買い物に行った。(I went shopping +to+場所 にはならない)I went shopping at a supermarket. とは言う
I went to Tokyo for shopping. とは言えるが to shopの方が自然。
ギター以外に私はウクレレとピアノも弾けます-----> Besides guitar, I can play the ukulele and piano.
夕べ、豆まき以外にわたしは豆も食べました-----> Last night, scattering beans, I ate some, too.
【except for ~以外は~ない】
夕べ、パーティーでコーヒー以外私は他に何も飲まなかった-----> Last night, at the party, except for coffee I didn't drink anything.
旅の間、初日以外は天気は良かったです(初日は天気が悪かった)----> During my trip, except for the first day the weather was good.
先日、気持ちが悪かった時、水以外何も口にしたくありませんでした----> The other day, when I felt queasy, except for water I didn't want to have anything.
トム以外は皆同じ意見でした-----> Except for Tom everyone's opinion was the same.
料理以外彼は何もしない------> Except for cooking he doesn't do anything.
そのレストランはカキ以外はすべておいしい----->At the restaurant, except for oyster everything is delicious.

私はもう少しで滑りやすい歩道で転ぶところでした-----> I almost fell on the slippery sidewalk.
わたしは主にコンピューターをメールのために使っている-----> I mostly use my computer for email.
日本人に多い間違い

Almost Japanese like to sing karaoke.
Almost my friends speak English.

ルール1)所有格(my, his, herなど)、定冠詞(the) 、指示代名詞(these, thoseなど)の前には必ずofが必要です
ですからmost of my friends となります
ルール2)most Japanese は世間一般的な日本人のほとんどという意味です
同様に (世間一般的な)ほとんどの人々は most people と言えます
ですが、特定した人のほとんどの場合はmost of the people...+(どんな人たちか説明)となります-->ルール1
例として、At the park, most of the people I met had dog. (公園で私が会ったほとんどの人々は犬を持っていました)この人々は世間一般的な人々ではなく私が公園で会った人々なので特定な人々なのでtheが必要です。ですからルール1を使います
ルール3)almost は、危うく~するところ、惜しい、もう少しで という意味で使う方がいい
もうすぐ2時です-----> It's almost two.
彼女はもうすぐ90歳です-----> She's almost 90.
私は危うく友人のカメラを落とすところでした----> I almost dropped my friend's camera. (過去形にすること)*実際には落とさなかった
ルール4)mostly は「大抵は」「主に」「大部分は」という意味。量、または頻度
その公園には主に子どもがいます。(大人もいるけど80%は子どもという意味)---> At the park, there are mostly children.
彼女はカラオケで主に英語の歌を歌いました(日本の歌も歌ったけれど、80パーセント以上は英語の歌を歌った)----> She mostly sang English songs at the karaoke.
私は主にコーヒーを飲んだ(他の物も飲んだが80パーセント以上はコーヒーを飲んだ)---> I mostly drank coffee.
私は大抵はジーンズを履きます-----> I mostly wear jeans.
注意)私は通常、ジーンズを履きます----> I usually wear jeans. これは頻度を言っている文で、80パーセントくらいの頻度と言えます。
I mostly wear jeans と意味は似ています。
