Many of service-providing companies are reducing their prices now.Specifically, some of major travel agents, such as JTB Corporation, have reduced their oversea travel prices in the period from April to September by 15%,and some of major hotel operators like Prince Hotels,Inc. have reduced their prices for a room by 4-8%.These movements are all aimed at preventing their customers from going away, amid the condition that the contraction of the market is going on due to population's declining and smaller number of foreign tourists coming to Japan. In preparatory schools and beauty parlors also, they have started to reduce their service charges. Some of them are likely to reduce their charges to half.
Until now, the price decling has been proceeding in the areas of consumer goods like food and household appliances, physical distribution and temporary worker dispatching. The movement this time is for the services for individuals. In these circumstances, this would be a double-edged sword because this will be the factor of squeezing profits for many service-providing firms while surely stimulating customers' consumption.
