This desymbolization became bound up with a second Aum
characteristic: a vision of an apocalyptic event or series
of events that would destroy the world in the service of
renewal.
All great religions contain variations of that vision,
ordinarily causing followers to struggle largely with
symbolic meanings. Asahara did not engage in this struggle
about such matters as Shiva's dancing the world out of
existence so that it might be renewed.
That "dance," as one commentator puts it, ~is only an
allusion," a way to represent powerful human forces,
in this case a grandiose version of the great universal
myth of death and rebirth, of world destruction and
re-creation.
Even the early Hindu storytellers, in shaping the myth,
warned that much of the detail was meant to be suggestive
and timeless rather than literal and prescriptive. But
the megalomanic guru absorbed the myth totally into his
world-encompassing self so that he could claim to act for
and as Shiva in embarking on a concrete contemporary
project of world destruction and renewal.
