KING: We are going to go out to Sarnath, India to talk with His Holiness, The Dalai Lama. There he is at the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies. At the bottom of the hour, we will be joined by Reverend Billy Graham.
Your Holiness, is this a new millennium for you? In the Muslim year, do you celebrate this as a year for your holy day?
THE DALAI LAMA: Just, sort of, normal days, holiday, happen. We enjoy one new day. So, actually, the -- I'm just wondering, what kind of feeling at your place just waiting, new day, new millennium.
KING: By the way, the delay is caused by the fact that we are on a satellite, and, His Holiness in a really remote area of India. So that is the reason for the long delay.
By the way, where are you? Where is Sarnath, India? And what is the Central Institute for Tibetan Studies?
THE DALAI LAMA: I'm here in a place called Sarnath, where you see historically Buddha taught the first his teaching about 2500 years ago. So we consider this place is something very sacred. So I'm very happy. It is from this, holy place, to talk with my old friend, Larry King, you, there, hello.
KING: It is an honor to have you. Do you believe -- in your faith, what does Christ represent?
THE DALAI LAMA: Please, repeat, not very clear, repeat your question?
KING: Do you believe that -- What do you believe Jesus Christ was? Was he a prophet? Was he a messiah? In your faith, who is Jesus Christ?
THE DALAI LAMA: Oh, from the Buddhist viewpoint, of course, such as Jesus Christ should not be ordinary person. These, you see, the great masters who really make sort of I think immense impact in human begin, in human mind, in order to improve, in order to be a sincere person, a good person. So, therefore, such masters we consider either, as a Buddhist manifestation -- so that is our, sort of, belief.
KING:Let's go back to India and His Holiness The Dalai Lama. And still to come, Reverend Billy Graham.
Your Holiness, do you expect to return to Tibet?
THE DALAI LAMA: Judging from the changing global level, and also the judging the transformation within the People's Republic of China, and also, the Tibetan spirit very high, and also worldwide sort of support and sympathy, therefore, the long run I'm optimistic.
But for the temporary, yes, inside Tibet the situation is very serious and very grave, such as human right violations, and then also the damage of environment, and essentially, usually I describe the whether, intentionally or unintentionally, some kind of culture genocide is taking place. So things are very serious.
But, long run, certainly, things will improve, things will change -- My, sort of, the basic aim regarding Tibetan issue, is something mutual benefit to the People's Republic of China as a whole, and Tibetan as well.
KING: As a great Buddhist leader yourself, have you talked to other leaders around the world, President Clinton, Tony Blair, and have they supported you?
THE DALAI LAMA: Yes, most of the -- the leaders of the world, and especially like the leader of United States and, also, leaders in many European countries, really showing not only just a genuine sympathy, but also they are very much willing to active, sort of, support in order to materialize meaningful dialogue with the Chinese government. So I'm very grateful.
THE DALAI LAMA: I just wanted to say you say, yes, I just was want to say, the one very important thing is very encouraging is, among the Chinese, now, especially among intellectuals and the writers, and also students, you see more and more number now sharing their genuine concern and support. As it sort of better -- two situation, so this is a very encouraging sign.
KING:Are you -- Your Holiness, are you optimistic about religious tolerance? Do you think we are going to be a better world in the years ahead?
THE DALAI LAMA: I'm quite sure the -- in the future, into 21st century, I think could be more happier, more peaceful, because I feel the 20th century, where humanity learned many new experiences, some are very painful experiences, such as violence on the basis of religious faith, or too much narrow-minded nationalism, things like that.
So, therefore, the -- because of these experiences, we humanity, I believe, are becoming more mature. So, therefore, the 21st century, it is this I think real sort of potential to be, more harmonious, more closer understanding, especially among the religious community. I think also with our the sort of greater opportunity, interact each other, learning from each other. So, therefore, I think there are real, sort of, I think, good possibility, to have, understanding, actually, closer relation. Through that way, we can make greater contribution for benefit of the humanity and also environment.
