It really started to hit me a few days ago. You and I were walking down the street and I pointed to the picture on the front page in the newspaper stand.

“Do you know who that is?” I asked.

Beaming with pride that you knew the answer, you looked up and said, “President Obama!”

“That’s right!” I congratulated you. “President is a very important job. Would you like to be president some day?”

Then, turning to me with a look as if I had just made the silliest suggestion ever, you laughed and said, “Daddy … I can’t be president! I’m not a boy!”

When I asked you what you did want to be, you said with all the certainty in the world, that you wanted to be … a princess.

Uh-oh.

And not just any princess. You like Arielle, and Cinderella, and Jasmine, and Aurora, but you really wanted to be Belle. And I had to be the Beast.

You know the one – where the helpless princess has only one singular path to happiness, and it revolves entirely around winning the affection of her Prince Charming. I thought those stories were lovely and cute before I met you. But when I began to realize the lesson that they were teaching in the context of what you might take from them, that all changed.

It’s not easy to avoid that message. It’s everywhere. We can’t walk through a store without finding some imagery of the glamorous princesses beckoning to you. Television – even a lot of children’s television – is dripping with it. Even when there are attempts to show strong women and girls, they’re often still objectified. (I thought we were safe watching Dora the Explorer on Nickelodeon, until the promos came on for the Winx Club ― the show about a band of superhero fairies with Barbie doll bodies flying around in tight tube tops and booty shorts.)

　大統領になりたい？と聞いたら、パパ、私、男の子じゃないからなれない、じゃあ、何になりたいの？と聞いたら、お姫様、と。

　ディズニーその他の媒体で、女の子、というか　女性はこうあるべき、こうあると幸せになる、というメッセージでこの世の中満ち溢れているわけですね。


　アメリカ人女性で、日本では、大きくなったらお嫁さんになりたいという女の子が多くいのに絶望して、アメリカに帰った人がいましたが、こうした問題は、グローバルな問題なわけなのに不思議ですね。

　日本人もアメリカ人も、同じ人間として、男女平等を説くのはいいが、アメリカと比較して説教垂れるアメリカ人というのは大抵は、リベラルでもなんでもなく、その実、植民地での統治者のような意識をもっていて、根っこではレイシストの場合が多いですね。

THE head of a UN human rights investigation on Syria said it was still impossible to tell for sure who has used chemical weapons in the country's devastating conflict.


Paulo Pinheiro, chairman of the investigation committee, said he would not comment on evidence sent by the United States, Britain and France to UN experts which they say shows Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces have used chemical arms.

"We are not able to say who has used chemical agents or chemical weapons and we are very much worried about the chain of custody of the substances," Pinheiro told reporters after an informal meeting with UN Security Council ambassadors.

A team of experts set up by the UN has also said that it needs access to Syria to determine where chemical arms have been used. The Syrian government has however refused to give the UN experts access to the country.




Pinheiro's commission said in a report issued this month that there was "reasonable grounds to believe that chemical agents have been used as weapons" in the 25-month-old conflict.

　【ニューヨーク時事】シリア内戦の人権侵害を調べている国連調査委員会のピンヘイロ委員長は２１日、シリアでの化学兵器使用について「誰が化学物質、化学兵器を使ったのか明言できない」と述べ、使用者特定は今のところ困難との認識を示した。ニューヨークの国連本部で記者団に語った。

　どちらかといえば、中立的な国連の判断では、どちらが化学兵器をつかったか断言できないにも関わらず、アメリカはアサド政府が使ったと断定し、それを口実に介入した、ということですね。

　仮に、後に、アサド側が使ったとわかったとしても、介入のさいの　アメリカ側に偏向があった、とは言えるわけですね。

Cunningham could not be reached for comment Friday.

　違うのは、日本では、そうした人たちは一般人に嫌悪されるのに、英語圏では、そうしたブログにNYTの記者が協力したり、主催者が新聞のコラムニストになったりできることだ。


　ニフコJapanTimesの賞味期限はとっくの昔に終わっている。

文科省のデータによれば、アメリカの大学教員のうちテニュアをもつのは62％で、助教授では12％しかいない。一流大学ほど要件はきびしく、ハーバード大学では2300人の教員のうちテニュアは870人しかいない。東大が世界と競争するなら、秋入学などより、非常勤も含めてすべての教員をテニュア審査してはどうだろうか。

"It's exploitation of poverty. That's what trafficking is," she said. "Human beings are being brought here to satisfy the demands of men, in particular men from the West."


She says many of Pattaya's street kids are trafficked Cambodians and that they have often been bought for as little as $300.

In one recent case a Cambodian woman sold her two granddaughters to traffickers. Thanks in part to Ms Enland, one of the girls has been found and rescued.

Official statistics, though limited, show almost all the trafficked children found in Thailand have been made to work either as beggars or as child prostitutes.

"In the old days in Pattaya sex workers would be women but now they are girls and boys," Sudjai Nakpain, a social worker, said.
