Synergy Effect

Yesterday, I had a meeting with my client and discussed about
the company’s new business.

Their main business is to lease medical machines for dental
clinics. Now, they are planning to open a self-esthetic salon.

We discussed about the synergy effect between two kinds of
businesses.

Synergy effect means multiplier effect.

They have a strong relationship with dental clinics.
Some patients are interested in beauty. So, there is a possibility
that some clinics introduce their self-esthetics salon.

Some customers who will visit their self-esthetic salon might
be interested in orthodontic. They can introduce them clinics.
If clinics go well, the company will get orders from them.

I think a synergy effect is an important point when a company
starts a new business.

Passion for training

Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.

Yesterday, I assisted a business training.
The topic was ‘Team Building’.

The main instructor was someone who made his team
number one in a big company before.

The training was done online.
During the training, he found one participant nodding off.
He got angry and shouted.
“Go home if you don’t want to learn”
The participant apologized and the training resumed.

I was impressed with the instructor’s very serious attitude.
I thought that doing things seriously is a point for success
in everything.

NHK Language Program

Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.

NHK is a national broadcasting station of TV and radio.
One characteristic of NHK is to have many programs to
learn foreign languages like English, Spanish, French,
Italian, Chinese, and so on,

I was interested in one of them.
The title is ‘Radio Business English’.
I checked the time schedule of this program.
It broadcasts three times a day, at 9:15, 12:40, and 23:20.
But I was not confident to listen to it regularly.

I found another good way to listen to it.
On the website, there are the programs of the previous week.
I can listen to them when we want. I don’t need to care
about the time.

I bought the textbook.
I will try to listen the 15-minute program every day.

KEIGO is complicated

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to observe a business training
for the staff in the restaurant industry.
The topic was ‘How to use KEIGO’.
KEIGO in Japanese means honorific or polite language.

There are three kinds of KEIGO.
1.SONKEIGO; the words or expressions which show respect to a person
2.KENJOGO; the words or expressions which show humility
3.TEINEIGO; the words or expressions which show politeness

We, the Japanese people, use these words or expressions depending on
the situation. Especially since we are conscious with our environment.

Although honorifics exist in English, they are more complicated in
Japanese.

Journey for shaking hands with associates

Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.

I read a biography of Mr. Soichiro Honda who was a founder of
Honda Automobile Company.

He was a just mechanic but very enthusiastic about technology.
He established a small company and made motorbikes and cars.
Honda became the brand which people all over the world knew.

The book described many episodes that we can know his personality.
Especially, I was impressed to know his behavior after he resigned
as a president of Honda.

He visited almost every sales agency and associated service factory
to show them his gratitude.
When he visited them, he shook hands with every member.

One mechanic realized his hands are dirty and tried to wash his hands.
Mr.Honda stopped him and said, ”No need. I’m also from a mechanic.
I like oily hands.”

He thought the reason why Honda became so big company was a cooperation
by many people related to Honda.

I think he is not only a great businessman but a great person too.
