SMOKING

Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

The New Zealand Government announced their policy that people aged 14
years and under will soon be unable to legally buy tobacco in their life.
New Zealand is aiming to become a non-smoking country.

In Japan, the rate of smokers is decreasing year to year.
Although people over 18 years old can buy and smoke, places where people
can smoke are decreasing.

I used to smoke till 15 years ago but I stopped smoking.
Since smoking is addictive, it was not easy for me to stop smoking.
Now, I’m happy not to smoke.

New Zealand’s rule is very strict.
Other countries might follow it if the policy will go well.

Orthostatic Dysregulation

Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

I listened to the radio last night.
It was an interview with one high school girl.

When she was in the first grade in junior high school,
she suddenly couldn’t get up in the morning because
her blood pressure is very low.
The name of the disease was Orthostatic Dysregulation.

Although she became a high school student, she has been still
struggling. And she knew that many young students are having
troubles of this disease.
She decided to publish a book which she described about her
experience. The book was read by many people and she got
many comments of encouragement.

Besides, she decided to make a movie.
She didn’t know how to make a movie at all but gathered fellows by
SNS and discussed together and tried to do it.
They collected money to make it by cloud funding.

The movie was shown in one theater and online.
Over 2000 people watched the movie at the same time.

I was surprised to know how energetic she was despite her disease.
And I hope many young people who suffer from this disease
will recover soon.

Self-esthetic

Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

They say that ‘self-esthetic’ has been popular in a few years
in Japan.

There are no estheticians in self-esthetic salons.
Customers use esthetic machines by themselves.
So, the charge is cheaper than usual salons.
In many salons, a subscription system is adopted.
Customers can use it as many times as they can without reservations

Before, there were some troubles that estheticians recommend
high price services persistently.
There are no worries in self-esthetic salons.

I’ve heard that there are men’s self-esthetic salons as well.
I’m conscious about fat around my stomach.
I wonder if I will visit there.

Partner

Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

I read an article about Starbucks in Japan on Nikkei MJ Newspaper.

It’s been 25 years since Starbucks came to Japan from the U.S.A.
Now, they have over 1,600 shops all over Japan.
The engine of their growth is staff who they call ‘Partner’.

The company try to make a good environment for partners to work well.
For example, they tried to lessen the regulation for staff about
their hair color and attire to respect partner’s personality.

The company hire over 350 handicapped people.
In one shop, some staff give service by sign language.

They are trying to develop local products.
Local staff propose new ideas about drinks and if they are
good ideas, they will sell them in their shop.

I think we can study many things to motivate employees.

What a pity!

Now, The End-of-year Jumbo Lottery is being sold.
The first prize is one billion yen (10 million US dollars) !!!

I read an article about lotteries in Japan on Yahoo News.

Many people miss the chance to get money from lotteries
because they don’t go to the place to change money with
their winning tickets within one year.

The total amount is 10 billion yen (100 million US dollars) a year.
Most of them are small amount prizes like 300 yen but it
includes some high price prize like 100 million yen (one million
US dollars).
What a pity!

They say that some people forget to check winning prize numbers or
lose their tickets.

Recently, I didn’t buy any lotteries.
Since I was interested in it again after reading this article,
I will buy them.
And of course, I will absolutely check winning prize numbers
later.
I put my tickets in a specific spot in my house so that I know
where to find them.
