Close Call

2021-12-16 08:36:05 | 日記
Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

The day before yesterday, on the 14th of December, the world boxing
title match, Naoya Inoue from Japan vs Aran Dipaen from Thailand
was held in Tokyo, Japan. Naoya Inoue beat Aran Dipaen in round 8.

Mr.Ohashi, the president of Ohashi Gym which Inoue belongs to,
said in the interview.
“I’m relieved to hold this match. It was a close call”.

What did it mean?
Actually, it’s risky to hold events by inviting people from
foreign countries under the situation which we are having
trouble about covid-19.

Mr.Ohashi negotiated with several government offices and event
halls and finally announced about this match on 29th of October.

When foreign people enter Japan, they needed to be quarantined
for 10 days. Mr.Ohashi asked Dipaen’s team to come to Japan
14 days earlier than before the match just in case.

On 29th of November, the Japanese government announced that they will
not allow foreign people to enter Japan because of a new variant.

That’s why Mr.Ohashi said “It was a close call”.
Just before the government’s announcement, Dipaen’s team
had already entered Japan by Mr.Ohashi’s requirement.

Anyway, boxing fans were happy to watch the match by
Mr.Ohashi’s judgement.

Gender equality

2021-12-15 08:28:14 | 日記
Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

There is a popular column named ‘My resume’ in Nikkei Newspaper.
Celebrities or notable businessmen or women serialize columns for a month.

Now, Mrs.Ryoko Akamatsu who is a president of Japan UNICEF is writing it.
Today’s column was about the story when she used to work for the Labor
Ministry many years ago.

She described about an inequality between men and women.
In 1960’s, some companies made a retirement age rule for women earlier
to men. It was common that women would leave a company when they got
married.

Mrs.Akamatsu made her efforts to correct an inequality of gender.
Later, a new law named ‘the Equal Employment Opportunity Law’
was made in Japan.

Recently, we are discussing about LGBT.
Anyway, it’s important for us to be treated equally regardless
of gender.

Tomonkai

2021-12-14 08:31:05 | 日記
Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

Tomonkai is a name of groups of graduates of Waseda University.
I am a graduate of the university.

There are over 1,300 Tomonkai all over the world.
Since Waseda is a big and old university, there are many graduates.

I belong to Ota Tomonkai.
It is a group by graduates who live in Ota Ward in Tokyo.
It holds parties regularly. And there are some clubs such as a golf club,
a trekking club, a karaoke club, sports cheering club, and so on.

Now, I don’t join these activities so often because I am busy in my
business. But after my retirement, I will be able to spend a lot of
time in Tomonkai.

You did it, Hinako!

2021-12-13 08:32:09 | 日記
Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

Yesterday, I described about Hinako Shibuno, a very popular Japanese
golfer. She was trying a qualifying test to enter the games of
professional golf tournaments in the U.S.A.

She had a difficult time the day before yesterday.
Her target was to be within 20th but she decreased the score and
her position became 29th from 7th of the previous day.

Sunday(Monday in Japan) was the final day of the test.
I stayed midnight and cheered for her on TV.

She concentrated her play and fought desperately.
In result, she increased the score and finally became 20th !
You did it, Hinako!

Since she got the qualification, she is going to play in the U.S.A.
next year.
I will cheer for her as well.
I am concerned to become lack of sleep because of a time difference.

Fight, Hinako, Fight!

2021-12-12 09:28:49 | 日記
Hi there, Jun Tomioka here.

Now, a qualifying test to enter the games of many professional
golf tournaments in the U.S.A. next season is being held.
Two female Japanese golfers, Ayaka Furue and Hinako Shibuno,
are challenging the test for spots in those tournaments.

The test is very tough. They have to play 8 rounds in total.
Out of 100 players, the top 45 players will pass the test,
and the top 20 players will be able to join many tournaments
next season.

The two Japanese played very well until the 6th day.
Yesterday was the 7th day. I watched the test on TV at midnight.

Ayaka played well and kept the 5th position, but Hinako had
a very difficult time. She made big mistakes in some holes
and decreased her score.
Her position fell to 29th from 7th on the previous day.

Hinako is a player whose mood has big ups and downs.
Yesterday was not her day, and as such, she did not play well.

Today will be the last round of the test.
I hope she will try her best and climb the ranks as high as she can.
