Hi there! Jun Tomioka here.
Exchanging new year post cards this season is custom for us
but it’s changing gradually.
Japan Post Office started to sell new year post cards in 1949.
Since then, issued cards increased year by year.
The number was one billion in 1964, two billion in 1973, and
4.4 billion in 2003.
But 2003 was the peak. The number started to decrease and
it’s 1.9 billion in 2021.
The reasons for this decrease are as below:
1. Email and SNS
People started to use email and SNS very often.
It’s easier to communicate each other.
2. Cost and Time
It costs 62 yen to send one card as a post cost.
And if you order printing, it costs some money.
3. Compliance
Recently, people don’t expose their addresses for the reason
of compliance.
Even now, I exchange about 100 new year post cards every year.
But next-generation people might not do this custom.
