The 98th Hakone Ekiden Marathon Race was held on the 2nd and the 3rd
of January.
It is a very popular event of the new year.
I think there are three reasons why this event is popular.
1. Cheering
We can watch the race on TV but if you live near the course of the race,
you can go out and cheer for runners along streets for free.
It is exciting!
2. Team Sports
This race is a relay style. 10 runners run about 20 km each and pass
a tasuki(a sash used as a baton). If one runner is having difficulties,
the tasuki is never passed. It is thrilling!
3. Honor of universities
This race is a competition among universities for the honor of their
school. Many graduates are cheering for them.
Aoyamagakuin University Team became the champion this year.
Unfortunately, Waseda University Team which I graduated from,
didn’t do well.
I hope Waseda will recover next year.
