Teen arrested for uploading manga on YouTube
Police in Kyoto, western Japan, have arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of uploading a manga comic book to the video-sharing website YouTube before its publication.
Police say the junior high school student allegedly made video files of the comic books, such as Shonen Jump or Shonen Sunday, so they could be read online.
The teenager is suspected of posting the images on 4 separate occasions over a 3-month period to last February.
Police say the boy encouraged people to view the comic book online. The works he posted were ONE PIECE, NARUTO, GINTAMA, MAJOR.
They say they decided to arrest him because his actions inflicted serious financial losses on the copyright holder.
They add that this is the first time someone has been arrested in Japan for uploading videos to YouTube.
The US-based video-sharing website is accessed more than 2 billion times a day. Experts point out that unauthorized postings of TV programs and music videos are a breach of copyright.
