現在、GRAに対して質問を寄せてくれた方への回答として、Q&A 記事を作成中です。そして、その記事の為にイラスト資料を数点新しく作成しているのですが、「サスペンションのセッティング」用のイラストを作成しましたので、先ずは、ここで紹介します。


『セッティングとはバランス調整 / Setting means Adjusting the Balance』

「セッティング」という言葉は多くの人が知っていて、実際に会話の中で使っているのですが、誤って何かを変更する事だけに使われています。適切な意味は「整える」という意味で、バランスを整える為の作業をセッティングと言います。ですから、安易に、乗り心地を良くする為や、足つきを容易にする為、速く走れる様に何かを変更する事は、車両全体のバランスを崩す原因にもなりますので、それはセッティングではありません。

『 セッティングに必要な要素 / Four Elements Necessary for Setting 』

タイヤのエア調整を始めとして、オートバイには数多くの調整可能な箇所があり、工具さえあれば誰でも簡単に「セッティング」が行なえると思われていますが、正確なセッティング作業を行なう為には 4つの「要素」が必要です。2つは、調整作業を行なう整備士と、乗って確認するテストライダーですが、それ以外に、「セッティング エンジニア」と「テスト用エリア」がとても大切です。特に、セッティング作業で行なう0.5㎜レベルの僅かな調整による変化でも正確に感じ取るには、他の車両や歩行者がいないセッティング作業専用の「テスト用エリア」がとても大切です。一般道では、安全性の問題があるだけでなく、交通状況や路面状況が変化するなど、外部から雑音が入り易い環境では、決して正確なセッティングは行ないのです。そして、「セッティング エンジニア」は、調整箇所の変更でどの様な車両挙動の変化が起きる等の経験が豊富で、車両の挙動を見ただけで調整の良し悪しを判断できる能力を持つ人です。もちろん、ライダーに合わせて行なうのがセッティングですから、実際に乗っている人のインプレッションを優先しつつ、調整の提案を行なえる人が重要です。

『サスペンション セッティングの順序 / Order of Suspension Setting 』

基本的には、どういう調整順序であっても、最終的に車両全体のバランスが整えば問題ありません。ただし、調整を行える幾つか箇所が、それぞれオートバイに与える大きさは異なります。ですから、最もお勧めする順序は、影響が大きく重要度が高い箇所から順番に進めていくのが標準的なセオリーです。

『エア圧調整のセッティング / Air Pressure Adjustment Setting 』

サスペンション セッティングで最も最初に行なうべき「タイヤのエア圧調整」と、セッティングのイメージを表してみました。

タイヤのエア圧調整は、車慮の操縦性や安定性に大きく影響する、最も大切なセッティング項目ですから、天秤棒（バランスバー）の右側は長くなります。そして、一方の左側に載るのは、ライダーとオートバイの残り全てになります。エア圧を変更して確認する事で、オートバイの動きやオートバイからの情報・感触が変化する事が理解できるでしょう。 そして、気を付けて欲しい事は、左側には ライダーがいる事です。つまり、ライダーが異なれば、同じオートバイで同じタイヤであっても、同じエア圧が最適にはならない事を理解すべきです。

今回は「エア圧セッティング」のみを紹介しましたが、重要度の高い順に、順次同世にバランスをとる調整を行なっていく事で、最終的にはオートバイ全体のバランスが整い、ライダーの体重や体格に合わせて、オートバイの運動特性を充分に発揮できる状態に近づける事ができ、安全性や快適性も大きく向上します。
