South Korean author indicted over book on 'comfort women'

SEOUL -- Prosecutors here indicted South Korean author Park Yu-ha without arrest on Nov. 18 on charges of libel in connection with a book she wrote on so-called "comfort women," it has been learned.
Park, a professor at Sejong University in Seoul, is the author of the academic book known in Japan by the title "Teikoku no Ianfu" (Comfort women of the empire: the battle over colonial rule and memory).
Former comfort women filed a criminal complaint against Park in June last year, saying that her descriptions of comfort women as "prostitutes" and being in a "comradely relationship" with the Japanese military were an insult to former comfort women.
Prosecutors said that former comfort women are recognized to be victims and nothing other than sex slaves, and judged content in the book to be fallacious.
The book was published in Korean in August 2013. Former comfort women sought a provisional injunction to halt publication, and in February this year, the Seoul Eastern District Court handed down a decision seeking deletion of parts of the book.
Earlier this month, Park's book won an Asia-Pacific Award -- presented to researchers who have authored outstanding works on politics, economics, culture and other issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

SEOUL – South Korean prosecutors have indicted a South Korean professor for writing a book in which she allegedly defamed Korean women forced into wartime brothels for the Japanese military.
Park Yu-ha, a professor of Japanese literature at Seoul’s Sejong University, was indicted on Thursday without being detained for writing “Teikoku no Ianfu” (“Comfort Women of the Empire”), in which she depicted the so-called comfort women as “prostitutes,” damaging their honor, the Seoul Eastern Prosecutors Office said.
She “is considered to have encroached on the victims’ personal dignity and honor with false facts and deviated from freedom of academia,” the office said.
Park told Kyodo later Thursday that she intends to fight allegations by the prosecutors that she falsified the facts.
Park’s book, published in 2013, has drawn strong criticism for siding with views held by Japan on the contentious comfort women issue.
In June, last year, a group of former comfort women filed a defamation suit against Park and the head of the publishing company. In a ruling handed down in February, the Seoul Eastern District Court ordered the removal of 34 passages from her book. They included one stating that the suffering of Korean comfort women was equivalent to that of Japanese prostitutes, and another part argues that it was not the Japanese military — at least officially — that kidnapped or forcibly took those women to military brothels on Korean soil. Many of the comfort women were from the Korean Peninsula, which was under Japan’s colonial rule from 1910 to 1945.

With hundreds of millions of dollars that they stole from banks and businesses, and profits from the black market sale of oil, ISIS has amassed a huge arsenal of weaponry, including heavy armored vehicles and artillery during their 18-month offensive in Syria and Iraq. According to the International Business Times, the armaments “are predominantly a mix of veteran Soviet tanks, large, advanced U.S. made systems, and black market arms.”
Carafano, an expert on the Middle East conflict, said that until recently, ISIS had no problem purchasing or confiscating assault rifles, light armored vehicles and trucks, grenade launchers and all the ammunition they needed. However, “the game changer” for ISIS came when they began to seize armored vehicles and heavy weapons like tanks and artillery pieces – mostly from the bedraggled Iraqi army, which frequently has been routed by the terrorists.
According to IBT, ISIS has acquired tanks from Syrian rebels, such as the T-72, a relatively modern Russian design, and the T-55, an obsolete model that dates back to World War II. “The group also has captured Chinese copies of Soviet field and anti-aircraft guns from the Iraqi and Syrian armies,” the publication reported.
The authoritative Brown Moses, a British blog covering the Syrian civil war, has reported that beginning in early 2013, Saudi Arabia “began smuggling weapons it had purchased from the Croatian government through Jordan to the south of Syria,” including RBG-6 grenade launchers, M60 recoilless guns, RPG-22 rocket launchers and M79 Osa rocket launchers. Those smuggled weapons ended up in ISIS hands.
The New York Times reported earlier this month that ISIS forces have been using ammunition manufactured in the United States, China and other countries that have been supporting the regional security forces fighting the jihadists.
