ドキュメントタッチで、彼女の人生を映像と語りで編んでいた。いっしょに見た知人は「自分の人生の最後が見えてきた感じで勇気が出た」と話した。存在感が強い一人の女性はやはり凡人ではなかった。戦後を泳いでいった一人の女性、メリーさんに惹きつけられた少なからずの人々がいた。彼女は舞台化され、ドキュメントになり、歌ができ、その人生と背景が書籍になった。なぜ？やはり映画監督の中村さんの本【ヨコハマメリー】（2017年）をまず読まなければ～。少しめくっただけで置いていた。ヨコハマがメリーさんと共に浮かび上がっていく。檀原照和さんの文庫はノンフィクションの『白い孤影』（2,018年）。【備忘録】
メリーさんは2005年に享年84歳で永眠。彼女の存在感は、周りに固有のオーラを与えたのだった。厚化粧は彼女の人生【物語】のパフォーマンスそのものだったのか。「生きるとは演じることである」のテーゼもあった。「生きることは演じること、死とは演じ切ることだと思う」（平田オリザ）だが、生きること＝演じる、は多様に演じる人生の舞台そのものゆえに、古くて新しいことばだと言えるのだろう。
