Forbes 8

We have two main areas of research in the lab, both of which are based on the principles of microbial ecology. The projects are as follows:
1. The synergistic interactions of microbial communities in extremely starved, aphotic environments. Namely caves. This is primarily the cave research that we carry out in the lab.
2. The natural history, genetic and metabolic adaptation by Salmonella to the natural environment.
This research uses the tools we have learned from studying microorganisms in cave environments to determine if there is a natural reservoir for the human pathogen, Salmonella, in the soil.
