The way the media is reporting on nuclear power is causing us to have unfounded fears

2020年10月10日 06時22分10秒 | 全般
The following is an excerpt from the Sankei Sho of 9/30.
It's a very conspicuous talk big. At the United Nations General Assembly, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to virtually zero by 2060.

Can the world survive the climate crisis? The Asahi Shimbun ran a front-page article on September 27, expressing hope for the 'ambitious declaration.' How can the world's No. 1 CO2 emitter bring its emissions to zero? The Chinese government has not given a concrete road map, but those interested in energy will get the idea of nuclear power generation without CO2 emissions.

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, China's nuclear power generation capacity will overtake the United States in 10 years. That is, it will become the world's largest nuclear power generation nation. It has already caught up with the world's most advanced technology. But in the long article in the Asahi newspaper, which spans two pages, the word 'nuclear' is nowhere to be found. Perhaps this is an inconvenient fact for the company's argument for 'zero' nuclear power plants.

What about Japan, which has pledged to cut its CO2 emissions by 26% by 2030? Before the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, 54 reactors were in operation across the country. After the accident, only nine reactors were in operation, and six of those reactors have now been shut down.

Indeed, public opinion polls are negative about restarting nuclear power plants. There are many issues to be dealt with, including the disposal of radioactive waste and counter-terrorism. But Steven Pinker, a professor at Harvard University, has the following to say about the situation. 'The way the media is reporting on nuclear power is causing us to have unfounded fears.' ("The Post-Corona World").

There is still a long way to go before renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power become the economy's backbone. Japan's energy policy is pushing it to an impasse. China points the finger at Japan for its backwardness in combating global warming. We can only hope that such a future does not come to pass.
