Koreans say, 'Japan colonized the peninsula as a foothold of the conquest of the continent.'
But I swear to them.

土器で煮炊きする「古代が広がっていた」という次第だ。　
進歩どころか退行していく民。
それが日本人的にはとても嫌だったが、ただ彼らの棲む半島は日本の脇腹に突き付けた匕首に似る。　
その地政学的存在ゆえに日本は中国、ロシアと戦争する羽目になった。　
鬱陶しい上に剣呑な古代人とはもう縁切りしかないと日本人は心に決めた。　
しかしそれを阻んだのがセオドア・ルーズべルトだった。
彼は日露戦争のあと、在朝鮮の米公館をすべて閉め、外交官をみな引き上げてしまった。
大使の一時帰国どころの騒ぎではなかった。　
朝鮮側は驚いた。
翻意してと頼んだが、セオドアは「お前たちには自治の力もない。日本に面倒を見てもらえ」と言った。　
彼はさらに「日本がそうすることは白人の重荷ならぬ黄色の思荷を担う日本の明白な使命だ」（Ｊ・フラッドレー『テディが日米戦争をおこしたのか』）。と言った。　
「白人の重荷」とはラドヤード・キプリングの詩にある言葉だ。
白人は野蛮で幼稚な未開人の地に行って、彼らを啓蒙しろ。
それが文明の民、白人の担った崇高な使命だと。　
で、どう啓蒙するのか。
この大統領発言と同じ時期、米下院議員ジョージ・フォスがマニラで演説している。　
「我々は神に課せられた義務として無能なフィリピン人に自由と独立の素晴らしさを教えねばならない。偉大な建国の父がニューイングランドで原住民に行った啓蒙の作業をここでもう一度やるのだ」（渡辺惣樹『日米衝突の萌芽』
ニューイングランドでの建国の父とは例の「丘の上の町」を語ったジョン・ウイッスロップを指す。　
彼がそこでやったのはインディアンを殺して丘を奪い、その死骸で丘の下を埋め尽くすことだった。　
マニラでも米国人は同じように植民地化に抗うフィリピン人を殺しまくった。
白人の「啓蒙」とは目障りな者たちをぶち殺すことだった。　
しかしセオドアは日本人が白人式の啓蒙をするとは信じていなかった。

先日は韓国工芸界の泰斗とかいう李七竜が「螺鈿は日帝支配時代に韓国の職人が日本人に教えた」と言いだした。　
螺鈿はそっちが鍍金の技術を学びに来たときに見せてやったものだろう。
嘘はだめと教えたのも無駄だった。　
日本は大使一時帰国を機に今度こそ果たせなかった絶縁を考えたい。
