①ふりをする

pretend 基本は　to do をつけて　　〜のふりをする

pretend to be asleep 寝ているふりをする
pretend not to know 知らないふりをする
I just pretended to be stupid. バカなふりをしていた

ちょっと応用で　pretend to be 〜　〜ごっこをする
We used to pretend to be pirates.　僕達は昔よく海賊ごっこをしたものだ

因みに
〜ごっこではなく〜の仮装するは　dress up as 〜
ｻﾝﾀの格好をする dress up as Santa Claus
What are you going to dress up as for Halloween? ﾊﾛｳｲﾝでどんな格好をするの？


pretendは名詞節も続く
You can't pretend that nothing happened. 何もなかったふりなんて出気ないよ
You can't pretend like nothing happened. でもいい


②〜しないようにする
try not to do
彼女は私を見ないようにしていた　( = 彼女は私を見ようしなかった )
She was trying not to look at me.




電車で寝過す　I overslept fell asleep on the train and missed my stop. ☆この表現にはsleep inは使うな

備忘録 MY ENGLISH 2018'-8 動詞編 願う/取っておく

wish 願い事
make a wish 願い事をする　for 〜のために
I made a wish for you / I make a wish for world peace 「君のために・世界平和のために」願い事をする
make a wish for good health 無病息災を願う

make a wish on a star 星に願いごとをする

wish for 〜　〜を強く望む
I wish for world peace. 願い事をするのではなく強く望む
That's what I wished for. それが私が強く望んだことだ

wish 人 to do これは　want 人 to do　と同じ形で、「人に〜してもらいたい」の強い願望になる

何をお願いしたの?
は定番で→ What did you wish for ?　で　What did you make a wish for ? ではない


願い事をする相手が神様の場合には　< pray 祈る　for 〜のために >　となる
Every year on the 1st of January, I go to the Meiji Shrine and pray for good health and safety of my family.
毎年元旦に明治神宮に行き、無病息災と家内安全を祈る

When you pass through the " Torii " gate, you are supposed to walk along either side because the middle is reserved for Gad.
鳥居をくぐる時は、真ん中は神様の通り道となるため、両側のどちらかを通る方がよい

reserved for Godの　reserveは　特定の人や特定の目的のために「〜をとっておく」という動詞で
英英辞典でも意味は→ to keep something so that it can be used by a particular person or for a particular purpose となっている
Those seats are reserved for the elderly. これらの席はお年寄りの優先席だ

派生形として　予約する　reserve a room = book a room　や reserve a seat = book a seatになる
因みに、個人的には　ﾚｽﾄﾗﾝの席を予約する時には reserve a table 飛行機を予約する時は　book a flightの方がしっくり来る

予約ではなく、ﾌｰﾄﾞｺｰﾄなどで席を「確保する」時は　secure the table　でしょう
save は将来のために〜をとっておく　
I just thought we should save our money for traveling. (将来)旅行しようと思って僕たちのお金を貯めようと思ったんだ
save the best for last 一番いいものを最後にとっておく
尚、「蓄え」「備蓄」には、名詞 reserveを使う


The wishes vary from praying for your family's health to passing an upcoming exam.

備忘録 MY ENGLISH 2018'-7 動詞編 bring

bringは、ただ「持ってくる」ではなく、話し手・聞き手・会話内の対象がいる(ある)場所に向かって何かを持っていく(来る)こと

bring と　bring about
どちらも、要因と結果があって要因が結果を「もたらす」意味だけれど

bring は直接「特定の」状況や感情を会話内の対象に向かって「運び込む」ｲﾒｰｼﾞ　　
An ambitious revitalization plan brought energy to downtown. 意欲的な再開発計画が商業地区に活気をもたらした
(活気がそこへ直接運び込まれるｲﾒｰｼﾞ)
因みに、その地区を活性化させる　→　vitalize the district でもいい

bring about はより因果関係に重きを置く 　

The different corporate cultures are brought about by a series of M & As.
一連の合併買収によって異なる企業文化がもたらされる　　< 合併買収 = 要因 > < 異なる企業文化 = 結果 >

Appropriate network management is critical as major security threats such as hacking and computer viruses are brought about via network.
適切なﾈｯﾄﾜｰｸ管理は、ﾊｯｷﾝｸﾞやｺﾝﾋﾟｭｰﾀｳｲﾙｽといった深刻なｾｷｭﾘﾃｨ上の脅威がﾈｯﾄﾜｰｸを経由してもたらされることから、とても重要です
< 不適切なﾈｯﾄﾜｰｸ管理 = 要因 > < ｾｷｭﾘﾃｨ上の脅威 = 結果 >

This war will bring about destruction of our country economically.
この戦争は我が国に経済的に破滅をもたらすだろう
< 戦争 = 要因 > < 経済的破滅 = 結果 >


bring out は、何か(誰か）がある場所にあって(いて)、その場所から「外へ」運び出される

例えば、ﾚｽﾄﾗﾝなどで厨房から食事が運び出される様な状況
it was around 6:15 or later when the food was brought out and set up on the main table.　

応用1: 「外へ」が広く「世間一般へ」になると
bring out a new product 新製品を売り出すとか
He’s bringing out a new album next month.

応用2: 内在するものを外へ「引き出す」
He is good at bringing out the best in people. 彼は人の長所を「引き出す」ことがとても上手い　* bring out the best in 〜の長所を引き出す

The spices really bring out the flavour of the meat.　そのｽﾊﾟｲｽ達は肉の香りをよく引き出す→この訳としては「引き立てる」の方がいいかもしれない
bring out the taste of 〜　なら　〜の味を引き立てる

年末年始はｺﾞﾐの回収もお休みだったため
( ｺﾞﾐ袋が山積みになっていた )は→　Garbage bags piled up.

*因みに「土を盛る」は　heap up / pile up earth

正月は
( 家族が楽しい楽しい時間を共にする )は→　share good times with family
* timesが複数形なのは各々の楽しい時間をshareするから?

*因みに個人が楽しい時間を過ごすのは　　have a good time

初詣の駐車場で
( 隣の車が斜めに駐車していた )は→　The car next to me was parked crooked.
crooked ｸﾛｹｯﾄﾞ *ﾛにｱｸｾﾝﾄは、「屈(湾)曲している」や「本来まっすぐであるべきものが左右どちらかに傾いている」ことで
crooked river やHe straightens the crooked picture frame on the wall. など
*因みにﾈｸﾀｲが曲がっている時には　Your tie is crooked !! となる

ｼｰﾄﾍﾞﾙﾄをする　fasten the belt ↔️　ｼｰﾄﾍﾞﾙﾄを外す　unfasten ( もしくは undo ) the seatbelt

☆ 色ではなく、輪郭や形がぼける　→　自動詞・他動詞 blur / 形容詞 blurry
The photo was blurred. ( もしくは blurry ) その写真はﾋﾟﾝﾎﾞｹだった

subtle <違い・変化などが>　わずかな ｻ(無音声のﾄｩ)ﾙｰ　　* ｻにｱｸｾﾝﾄ　There is a subtle ( = slight ) difference.


subtle colors →　同じ黄緑系でも萌黄色・鶯色・海松(ﾐﾙ)色など様々あって、その「微妙な色遣い」を表すのが subtle
The colors in the painting are very rich but subtle.　　　
　　
大胆な→ bold →　大胆な色使い bold color / 大胆なﾃﾞｻﾞｲﾝ　bold design

繊細なﾀｯﾁ→ delicate touch
Renoir had developed a delicate touch and vibrant brushwork that were distinctly his own.


色合い tint 色相 hue 色調 color tone などは、はっきり言って厳密な使い分けなんて出来ない
ただ、「青っぽい」や「赤っぽい」などの形容詞は→ 色 + ishで表現し、
( red →　reddish / blue → blueish ) bluish purple 青っぽい紫となる

青味と名詞表現にするなら　bluish tint

☆ 光の明度に関する表現
暗い　　　dark
明るい　　bright < 　brilliant ｷﾗｷﾗと輝く・ｻﾝｻﾝと輝く (強い光が目に飛び込んでくるような輝き)

bright / brilliantは、聡明の「明」にも通じていて　
bright → She is very bright. 彼女はとても賢い / a brilliant young musician 才能溢れた若手の音楽家

☆ 色に関する表現
暗い　　　dark
明るい　　bright < 　vivid 鮮やかな　< vibrant きらめく

* 鮮やかな　vividは色だけでなく→　I had a really vivid dream last night. ﾘｱﾙな夢 =鮮やかな夢
vividly 「 鮮やかに 」　→ I remember it vividly.　などがある

濃い　　　rich ( もしくは dark )
* 因みに「 深い 」はdeep だが、 個人的には「 濃い 」も「 深い 」も明確に使い分けが出来ないので
dark green 深緑 / deep blue 紺碧 / rich red 真紅　で覚えることにする

薄い light　　　白みがかった薄さ pastel / 白みがかった薄さが褪せる pale / 黒みがかった薄さが褪せる　= くすんだ dull

その他の色表現
fluorescent ﾌﾛﾚｯｾﾝﾄ　* ﾚにｱｸｾﾝﾄ → 蛍光色の / 因みにﾗｲﾝﾏｰｶｰは highlighter　夜光塗料 luminous paint　発光体 luminous body

種を蒔く　plant seedsでいい　sowはやや古めかしい表現? →因みに蛇足ながら　ﾐﾚｰの種を蒔く人は　The sower
苗 seelding 稲の苗 rice seelding 田植え rice planting

「植える」は基本 plant →　plant a tree


In Japan, Noyaki is done to burn the dried grass in winter so that new grass can grow in the spring.
It is also an annual event.

日本では続く春に新しい草が生えるように冬に枯れ草を焼き払う「野焼き」を行う
「野焼き」はまた年中行事でもある
