ランカスターMBA看板講座、ジェリー・ジョンソンのストラテジー
気がつけば一ヶ月近くブログを更新していませんでした。この一ヶ月はランカスターMBAで最もタフで充実した期間になったと思います。中でもジェリー・ジョンソンのストラテジーの講義、グループワークとプレゼンテーションの繰り返しは今までの退屈な理論と概念中心のMBA生活のイメージを一新しました。ランカスターMBAのストラテジー、コンサルティング関係のプロジェクトでの知識と経験は実際のビジネスでも応用できると感じます。
先週末は課題がマインドフル・マネジャーのブログのみだったので、ランカスター大学周辺を散策してみました。新たな発見は、一番近い海岸まで車で１０分で行けた事と近くにゴルフコースが２つありました。４月中旬の試験期間が終われば多少時間に余裕ができるので夏のリンクス・デビューを目標にゴルフを始めようと思っています。
以下にストラテジーの講義について書いたマインドフル・マネジャーの課題のプログを貼付けておきます。
Gerry Johnson’s Strategic Management
Strategic Management was one of the best modules in the Lancaster MBA. Our group analyzed the Hikuma Pharmaceuticals PLC, which was founded in Amman, Jordan in 1978 by Mr. Samih Darwazah. Strategic Management was a one week module, from 8.30 or 9 o’clock in the morning to 6 o’clock in the evening. We had a group presentation every morning, and in order to prepare for this we worked until midnight. It was a tough experience but the cycle of lecture, group work and presentation was very practical and useful in gaining new strategic knowledge from real businesses mainly in the Middle East and North Africa.
The main purpose of this module was to learn how to develop an argument, including showing clear ideas, with critical, coherent and relevant analysis/discussion, in a logical flow. During this module, we set ourselves up to be consultants of an analyzing company using basic theories such as PESTEL analysis, scenarios, Porter’s 5 Forces and so on. This is essential for consultants but this was the first experience for some of us. We tried to use all the theories which we had learnt, and decided which were the most suitable for analyzing Hikuma’s strategy. This process was time-consuming and stressful but helpful for understanding the theories and how to use them precisely.
In short, the Lancaster MBA seemed likely to focus on case studies, theory and concepts from famous ivory-tower academics. However, during Gerry Johnson’s Strategic Management, we obtained knowledge-by-exemplification from the cycle of lecture, group work and presentation. What we learnt could be adopted in real business situations even by those who do not work as consultants.
