エジンバラで開催中のクリスマスマーケット

ランカスターから日帰りで、世界遺産に指定されているスコットランドの首都エジンバラで開催中のクリスマスマーケットを見てきました。今年は１１月２４日（木）から１２月２４日（土）まで、平日、クリスマス・イブは朝１０時から夜８時まで、週末は夜１０時まで開催予定です。ここもドイツ西部フランクフルトからやって来た伝統的なジャーマン・クリスマスマーケットで、雑貨・食品のクオリティ、規模、雰囲気ともに素晴らしくお勧めできるイギリスのクリスマスマーケットのひとつです。

イギリスMBA｜ランカスターMBA（ミカエルマス・ターム終了）

無事にミカエルマス・ターム（一学期）終了しました。当初は途中離脱も検討しなければならないほど追いつめられた状況でしたが、予想よりも課題の提出がスムーズに進み英語に対する自信も回復しつつあります。理由はいくつか挙げられます。まずクラスメートは基本的に優秀かつ親切なのでメンバー同士で不得意な分野をカバーする傾向があります。また個人の習慣や意見を意外に尊重し合うので無理に深夜までグループワークをする必要はありませんでした。最終の２週間を除き６、７時間の睡眠時間は確保でき、週末も１日は自由に使えました。前年と比較し課題の量が減量されている事も影響していると感じます。詳しくはこのタームのまとめのレポートで報告する予定です。

Business Simulation Exercise

We did a business simulation exercise on Friday December 2 nd. It was a venture business game, which simulated a company producing personal computers for six quarters. At first, we set up the company using one million pounds, selecting the company’s name, product lines, scale of factories and locations of target markets. We made a big mistake in the initial investment, in investing too much money in the factory. As a result, the company had a deficit of more than one million pounds, and this severely affected the business. Our members tried to recover from this situation during the next five periods, but our strategy failed, as we only focused on the market share to the neglect of a careful consideration of our profits. Although our members tried to expand the business and compete with other rival products, the company unfortunately became bankrupt in the sixth quarter, with a deficit of more than eight million pounds.



During this game I was very uncomfortable, because there were five group members using only one PC, and most of the game was played by just two of the members. Some members' opinions were not reflected in this simulation game, so it was a waste of time for them. On the other hand, there were some positive aspects, in that it was an easy and enjoyable way to simulate a venture business without real risks. However, as a business exercise in a MBA programme, it showed a lack of management. The group should have consisted of three members or less, so each member could make an effective contribution to the task. When we developed products, some decisions, including the choice of style, design and performance, were easy to negotiate with the team members, but in contrast, crucial decisions, such as the scale of factory and target markets, were difficult to discuss.

To sum up, this game was an easy way to practice a venture business in the classroom, although it has some problems, including some technical issues and the difficulty of negotiating decisions within a large group. If we have a chance to play this game again in the MBA programme, it should be with three or less members, so the computer can be used effectively. To make a business successful and sustainable, we need to focus on all the most important aspects of business, considering all the members' experience and opinions.

Lincoln Christmas Market 2011

＜リンカーン・クリスマス・マーケット 2011＞

昨年は降雪のため中止になったイングランド中東部のリンカーンで行われたクリスマス・マーケットを訪れました。12月1日(木)～4日(日)の４日間の日程で約250の店舗が軒を連ねます。ここはイギリスで初めてドイツ式のクリスマス・マーケットを開催したことで知られています。また今まで訪れたイギリスのクリスマス・マーケットのなかでは最もヨーロッパの雰囲気を楽しめました。というのも訪問者の多くは地元のイギリス人で観光客はほとんど見られなかった事と歴史的な街並が影響していると思います。
