What are the most important skills for a manager?
We discussed the most essential aspects and qualities for managers in Mindful Manager’s class on Monday. List them below:
Ability to prioritize, Assertive, Effective crisis management, Credibility/Trust, Influential, An effective coordinator, Reflective, Motivated & inspiring, Vision & Foresight, Being organized, Effective communication, Self-awareness, Manipulative/Ability to lie, Can cope with uncertainty, Adaptive, Maintains good relationships, Good critic, Metis/Political astuteness, Charisma, Negotiator, Keep learning, Time Management, Clear goals, Decision making, Being impartial, Result oriented, Making a valued contribution.
There are some aspects which I did not consider in my ten years management experience in a Japanese company. For example, being assertive, manipulative/ an ability to lie and charisma are not common features of managers. In our society, we prefer to treat employees respectfully and try to find their potential ability. Organisations also tend to educate employees suitable for their own corporate culture and strategy. Good criticism is also a very important aspect in real business situations. However, in Japan, a tendency to make criticism, even when valid, sometimes causes problems with superiors in the company, and companies and society in Japan prefer to engage submissive people as team members. Unfortunately, some managers feel that a person who often makes criticism may be against the organization’s decisions and may disrespect their superiors.
To sum up, I believe the most important aspects for managers are generally similar around the world. However, in a specific country or region, some aspects might work in the opposite direction. We need to be aware that some aspects of management may have different meanings in different cultures.
