ARCHAELOGICAL DISCOVERIES THAT BRING THE PAST ALIVE

　本日の朝日新聞の読書欄に、立命館アジア太平洋大学（ＡＰＵ）学長、出口治明氏による『若い読者のための考古学史』（すばる舎）のすばらしい書評が出ている。

　出口さんは、「１９４９年、ウィラード・リビーが放射性炭素年代測定法を考案したことで、年代の測定が可能になった。ＬＩＤＡＲ（光検出測距）はおそろしく正確で解像度の高い三次元データを取得する。そして現在は、レーザーや衛星写真、地中レーダーを使ったリモートセンシングによって発掘せずに地中の様子を知るという考古学者の夢が徐々に現実のものとなりつつある」と指摘されている。考古学の夢は、「過去を蘇らせること」だ。

『若い読者のための考古学史』には、いろんな人物――もちろん中にはおかしな人もいるし、むしろそちらのほうが多い――を紹介しつつ、そんな人類の夢について、以下のように語っている。

The development of archaeology is one of the great triumphs of nineteenth- and twentieth-century research. When our story begins, everyone assumed that humans had been on earth for a mere 6,000 years. Now the time scale is 3 million years and counting. But for all the serious scholarship, we still marvel at astounding, and often unexpected, archaeological discoveries that bring the past alive. The terracotta regiment of Chinese Emperor Shihuangdi, found during the digging of a well (Chapter 31); a 3,000-year-old village in eastern England destroyed so rapidly by fire that an uneaten meal survives in a pot (Chapter 40); or finding out that 2 million years ago some humans were left-handed. These are the discoveries that make our blood quicken – and we make new finds every day.

　And so, the actors are on the stage and the curtain is about to rise. Let the historical play begin!

　考古学の進歩は、19世紀と20世紀の学術研究きっての大勝利のひとつだ。この物語を語りはじめたとき、だれもがわたしたち人類の歴史はわずか６０００年と思っていた。それがいまでは３００万年までのび、さらに昔へさかのぼりつつある。どれほど学識ゆたかな人でも、驚異的でときに予想外の考古学的発見が過去を鮮かによみがえらせるたびに、驚嘆の念に打たれるものだ。たとえば、井戸掘りの最中に見つかった中国は秦の始皇帝の兵馬俑（31章）。火事で一瞬のうちに焼きつくされて、土器のなかに手つかずの食事が残っていたイングランド東部の３０００年前の村（40章）。あるいは、２００万年前にも左利きの人がいたという気づき。こういった発見に、わたしたちの血はたぎる――しかも、新たな発見は毎日ある。

　さあ、役者が全員、舞台に揃そろった。そろそろ幕が上がるころだ。歴史劇のはじまり、はじまり！
