TO CONFUSE

　動詞confuseは、「…を困惑させる、まごつかせる」。

○Practical Example

  "In the director’s latest film, poor editing and complicated plot twists left many in the audience confused in the end."

  「その監督の最新映画は、編集も雑で複雑な話の筋が残っていたため、多くの観客は最期に困惑した」

●Extra Point

  次のようにget confusedの形で使われる。

　"Today, some people say that advertisements are not good because it encourages us to buy things we don't really need." 　

　"Yes, advertisements bombard us with too much information and people get confused on which products we really need."

TO HOST

　動詞hostは、「（会・行事などを）主催する」「（パーティー・会合などの）主人役を務める」「（テレビ番組などを）司会する」の意味で使われる。

  　pretenseはpretendの名詞形で「見せかけ、ふり」。

TO PLAGUE

  　plagueは「伝染病、疫病」だが、動詞としても使われる。 　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この表現を学習する。 　

　受身形で「…を絶えず悩ます、…にしつこく言う［せがむ］」の意味で使われることが多い。

POST, POSTING

　postingは「広告掲示」であるが、インターネットでは「（ネットワーク上に）掲示されたメッセージ（post）」の意味で用いられる。

  "It is his job to review all postings made on the Web site."

  "And he flags comments that may be deemed offensive by readers."

  「すべてのネットの書き込みをチェックするのが彼の仕事だ」 　

　「そして読者による攻撃的なものであると思われるものにしるしをつけている」

  動詞postも「（ネットワーク上に）メッセージを掲示する」の意味で使われる。

EXPECTANT

動詞retardは、「（進行・発育などを）遅らせる、妨害する」。

　regulationは、「規則、規約、規定、法規」。

　動詞complementはすでに2013/06/30のGetUpEnglishで紹介した。 　

　「…を補完する、補って完全にする、…になくてはならぬ」と意味で使われる動詞だが、いくつか違う意味でも用いられる。 　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、complementの少し違った意味の使い方を紹介する。

　「ぴったり合う」の意味でも用いられる。

  "Zoff manufactures a variety of eyeglasses that complement any face shape, complexion, or personal style." 　

　"And its products are reasonable."

DEPOSIT(2)

　depositは、「預金、積立金」のほか、「手付金、頭金」「保証金、敷金」などの意味で使われる。2011年1月17日のGetUpEnglishでも学習した。

　 そのほか、「（鉱石・石油・天然ガスなどの）埋蔵物、鉱床」の意味でも使われる。
