新型コロナウイルス蔓延の影響により、世界経済は急激に悪化すると見られている。現在のニュース記事はこの関係のものばかりだが、本日のGetUpEnglishもいくつか気になる表現を紹介したい。

関係代名詞whatは先行詞なしで使うことができる。

最後のasのあとにはsomething bigger and betterが省略されている。元々買ったときも、その前より話題性も価値もあるものとして（自分でない誰かが）手に入れたと思われる。asがあるだけでそれがわかるので、省略されているのだろう。

what is...の理解がむずかしいかもしれない。実際、このwhat isはとってしまって、a year in the largest wave of furloughsとしてもほとんど同じ意味になるが、どんな英語も正確につかめるようにしておきたい。
このwhatは関係代名詞であるから、辞書で用例を確認したい。すると、いつの時代も信頼できる『大英和辞典』に次の定義と用例がある。
[関係代名詞として] (…する)もの[こと] (the thing(s) which, that or those which, anything that).
･What you say is true.＝It is true what you say. 君の言うことは本当だ.
･Give me what you can. くれるだけ下さい.
･I will do what I can for you. できる事は何なりといたしましょう.
･Tell me what you remember of it. それについて覚えているだけのことを話して下さい.
what is...は「…であること」と解すればいいと思う。
さらに、furloughは「《従業員の》一時解雇[帰休]」（リーダーズ）、
wave ofは「急激な増加」（リーダーズ）であるので、
a year in what is the largest wave of furloughs since the theme park resort closed in mid-Marchを直訳すれば、「テーマパークが3月中旬に閉館以来の一時帰休者が最大急増であることのなかで1年間は」ということになるだろう。
そう考えれば、
「ウォルト・ディズニー社は、新型コロナウイルス蔓延によりテーマパークは3月中旬に閉館して以来、従業員の一時帰休の最大急増のなかで1年間の福祉手当を保障する一方、従業員4万3000人への給与支払いをとめることを決定した」
ということになるだろうし、日本語を調整すれば、
新型コロナウイルス蔓延により、ウォルト・ディズニー社はテーマパークを3月中旬に閉館したが、以来最大となる従業員４万3000人の一時帰休を決め、1年間の福祉手当を保障する一方、給与支払いは止めることを決定した。
くらいになるだろう。
英和翻訳の場合、一つひとつの表現を正確に理解することが大事であることは言うまでもない。それをしないで、自分の都合のいいように日本語で処理していくと思わぬミスにつながることがあるので、自戒を込めて注意したい。

キリスト教主教を経験している宗教学者が書いた本ということなので、キリスト教寄りなのかなぁと思って読み進めましたが、目立った偏りがなく、信者以外に向けてかみくだいて説明することに注力したのがわかる感じで、とても読みやすいです。
三大宗教を中心に、その他歴史的に大きな意味を持った宗教や派生宗派などを解説しています。
神道についても触れられていました。
海外から見ると、なんとも言えない土着自然信仰に見えるのだなぁと、逆に新鮮に感じました。
そういう部分も決して見下した感じではなく、確かな知識をもとに第三者目線から解説している部分に好感が持てます。
かなり大きく分厚い本ですが、これまで読んだ宗教関連の入門書の中では一番読みやすく、理解しやすかったです。
このシリーズはどれをとっても読みやすく中身が濃いのでお勧めです。
文字の多い本でレイアウトも地味であり、Kindle版でもあまり遜色ないので、かさばるのが気になる方はKindle版でも良いと思います。

動詞deliverは「…を配達する、届ける、（人）を送り届ける」の意味で使われる。
この状況で、ご自身が危険な状態にあるにもかかわらず、日用品を配達してくださる、届けてくださる方々に、深く感謝したします。みなさんのおかげで、どうにか生き延びていられます。
動詞deliverはほかにもいろいろな意味があって、「救い出す (relieve), 解放する〈from, of〉」（リーダーズ）の意味でも使われる。

For a wide variety of socio-economic reasons, it is the poor and working class in this country who are exactly in that position as they suffer higher rates of diabetes, drug addiction, obesity, stress, high blood pressure, asthma and heart disease — and are most vulnerable to the virus. Poor and working-class people have lower life expectancies than rich people in general, and that tragic unfairness remains even truer with regard to this pandemic.

4年前の2016年の4月21日、偉大なシンガーでダンサーでプロデューサーでソングライターでギターリストだったPrince（1958-2016）が亡くなりました。
Asahi WeeklyのコラムMarty’s Playlistで、Martin Friedmanがプリンスの代表曲であり、rock anthemのひとつである “Purple Rain”について熱く語っている。

大ヒット曲「ビートに抱かれて」には、のけぞるくらいすごいギター・プレイがいくつか盛り込まれている。超イカしたギター・ソロで始まるが、これはそれまでのポップ・ソングでは聴けなかったもので、実に新鮮で革新的だ。この曲はちょっと面白いことがあって、ベースがまったく使われていない。ポップ・ソングでそんなことができるなんて、プリンスはほんとうにすごいミュージシャンだ。

こうしたニュース英語を英日翻訳する時がそうだが、一字一句訳そうとするのではなく、パラグラフ全体を見て、「日本語ではこういうのが普通だよね」と意識して訳文を「書く」ことが必要かもしれない。そして、挿入のsaying以下と、本動詞のanchored以下をどちらを先に訳すかという問題があるが、それは「次のパラブラフと自然につながる」処理にすればよい。次のパラブラフは以下のとおりなので、「司会を務めた」で訳文を終えるのがいいだろう。

自分で英語を書く際にはこういったことを考えると思うので、英語で書く、日英翻訳の視点で考えてみることが必要だと思う。
英日翻訳も日英翻訳ももう30年以上仕事として続けているが、まだまだ学ぶことがたくさんあるし、毎日しなければ実力の向上は望めないし、仕事以外のところで勉強する必要がある。
