Let's get to the deals that make sense, fit a budget, help a team and are generally to be applauded in a winter where madness took over. Here they are, 11 acquisitions I love:

6. Daisuke Matsuzaka, Red Sox starter ($103.1 million, six years). Boston's game plan to blow everyone away with their $51.1 million posting fee paid off since they knew D-Mat had absolutely zero leverage. The Red Sox originally offered only about $6.5 million a year (close to $40 million for six years) but returned home with Matsuzaka after upping the price to $52 million.

Early speculation about club president Larry Lucchino's trip to Japan was that he'd try to get Seibu to chip in to get the deal done (which would be clearly against the rules), but I do believe it was really only a "fact finding mission,'' as Boston claimed.

Fact No. 1 is, D-Mat was very unlikely to go back to Seibu. Under the circumstances, agent Scott Boras did extremely well, as always; Boras beat the audacious posting fee and became a household name in Japan. Yet, considering the Red Sox believe they can earn $6 million a year via Matsuzaka-driven revenues (the buzz is already extraordinary), the deal works for them, as well. "I'm glad all sides came together,'' GM Theo Epstein said. "Now let's hope he's good.''

赤坂議員宿舎 「支持者には言えぬ」埋まるか定員

国会議事堂から徒歩約１０分、地上２８階建ての３ＬＤＫ８２平方メートルが月々９万２０００円－。来年２月に完成、４月から入居が始まる衆院赤坂議員宿舎（東京都港区）の家賃は、周辺物件の相場の５分の１以下。だが、職住接近の格安物件に「議員特権」との批判が噴出し、当初予定していたスカイラウンジ、スポーツジムは「国民の理解が得られない」と、急遽（きゅうきょ）会議室と図書閲覧室に変更された。入居予定の議員からは「こんなに批判されてまで入りたくない」と入居をためらう声も続出している。

結論は簡単。家賃を相場に合わせ、５０万円にすれば良い。開いた部屋は、民間に賃貸すれば良い。名前も別の名前に変えて、無駄にしないようにする。

渡辺竜王防衛

第６局前のインタビューで、佐藤棋聖が、「渡辺竜王がこんなに強いとは思わなかった」と本音が出た。まさか、佐藤棋聖が敗れるとは信じられない。
渡辺は、他のタイトル戦に出ていないじゃないか。

As Kei Igawa arrived at Yankee Stadium for a tour and a meeting with general manager Brain Cashman, a crowd of almost 40 Japanese reporters inched closer to the metallic-blue SUV that chauffeured the Japanese left-hander into the Bronx.

Igawa, with hair shorter than Johnny Damon's but probably a little longer than Yankee standard, stepped from the backseat, and it didn't take long for the camera flashes to go off.

A lone Yankees fan at the back of the scrum stated, "We didn't get Daisuke Matsuzaka, but we got Igawa."

Not quite, but the two sides are awfully close. All one had to see to know that was Igawa proudly wearing a Yankees jacket as he left the stadium. He was also wearing a big smile.

"It's a wonderful place and I want to pitch here," Igawa said of Yankee Stadium through a translation by a Japanese reporter. "The deal is not done, but it will be nice if we can do it."

Igawa and the Yankees have agreed in principle on a five-year, $20 million contract, but there are still some details to be ironed out.

Igawa, 27, flew into the Big Apple early Wednesday and spent much of the day just looking around. It wasn't quite what he expected.

"My impression about New York was that there would be a lot of people walking [on the streets]," said Igawa, who will take his physical on Thursday. "But I was surprised there were a lot of cars."

The chilly weather had a lot to do with keeping people indoors, yet it didn't stop the throng of Japanese media, who huddled together for a half-hour or more waiting for Igawa to arrive, then another hour to catch him as he left.

Media members there to catch the moment admitted that Igawa -- who went 14-9 last season with a 2.97 ERA and 194 strikeouts for the Japanese Central League's Hanshin Tigers -- isn't as big a star as the Yankees' other Japanese import, Hideki Matsui, but his presence here still means a lot back home.

Igawa is expected to arrive in New York and take his physical on Wednesday, though the Yankees may not officially announce a deal with the pitcher until after the holidays. A press conference could take place at the stadium, though that might not be until after New Year's Day.

Igawa's five-year, $20 million contract has not yet been finalized, and the Associated Press reports that the Yankees and agent Arn Tellem are still negotiating the year-to-year breakdown of Igawa's salary and what performance bonuses will be included.

Igawa will join Pettitte, Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina, Randy Johnson and Carl Pavano as starters on the Yankees, with Igawa and Pavano likely to battle for the fifth starter's spot. Johnson is recovering from back surgery, so both pitchers could open the year in the rotation if the Big Unit isn't ready by Opening Day.

The Yankees won Igawa's negotiating rights on Nov. 28, outbidding several other teams, including the Mets. New York and Arn Tellem, who represents Igawa, have until midnight on Dec. 28 to come to an agreement, or Igawa would have been returned to Hanshin.
