The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Masumi Kuwata on a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.
No other terms of the deal were disclosed.
Kuwata, 38, is a 20-year veteran of the Japanese Central League, having played with the Yomiuri Giants since 1986. In that time, he has recorded 173 wins in 442 career games. His win total is tied for 37th on the all-time list while his 2,761.2 innings pitched ranks 35th. He also threw 118 complete games, including 21 shutouts.
"With our international scouting efforts increasing over the last several years, we are very pleased to come to terms with Kuwata," said Pirates Senior Vice President and General Manager, Dave Littlefield. "He has had a great career in Japan and we're looking forward to seeing him in a Pirates uniform in spring training."
Kuwata appeared in just three games during the 2006 season, posting a 1-1 record with the Giants. One of his finest seasons came in 1989 when he went 17-9 with 20 complete games and a league-leading 2.60 ERA. He was also named MVP of the league in 1994 and captured the award for the best pitcher in the league in 1987.
