ということであるが、首都圏が近い、という意味ではそうかもしれないが、そうでない今回の福島でもこれほど巨大に影響があった。つまり、他の原発で重大な事故が発生しても、日本社会に及ぶ影響はかなり大きい。
他の原発を維持するというなら、事故が起きないための対策と同時に、事故が起きたときの対策をしっかりしてほしい。

Mr. Kan said on Friday that he was asking that the plant close after “considering the tremendous repercussions a major accident at Hamaoka would have on the entire Japanese society.” He said that Chubu Electric would be asked to strengthen its defenses before the state’s nuclear regulator would authorize a restart.
浜岡原発で重大な事故が発生した場合、日本社会全体に及ぶ重大な影響を考慮した

An exhaustive study of autism in one community has found that the disorder is far more common than suggested by earlier research.
The study of 55,000 children in Goyang, South Korea, found that 2.64 percent ― one in every 38 children ― had an autism spectrum disorder.

"There's no reason to think that South Korea has more children with autism than anyplace else in the world," says Bennett Leventhal, another author of the study. Leventhal is also deputy director of New York's Nathan Klein Institute for Psychiatric Research and a professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at New York University Medical Center.

韓国北部の京畿道楊州市は９日、東日本大震災の被災地支援のため市職員が集めた募金計５００万ウォン（約３７万円）について、日本に送るのを取りやめ、地元学生の奨学金に使うことを決めたと明らかにした。聯合ニュースが報じた。
日本の中学校教科書検定で合格した社会科公民や地理の教科書に竹島（韓国名・独島）が日本の領土として明記されたことを受け、職員の間で反発が高まったのが理由という。
同ニュースによると、職員が３月末に１人当たり５千～１万ウォンを出し合った。市は今月４日、奨学金を運営する財団に募金全額を渡した。
中部の忠清北道槐山郡も同様の理由で先月初め、募金活動を中止している。（共同）
もっともこれは、文化というより、韓国の強烈なナショナリズムの所産であろう。

畜産農家らによると、「廃用牛」とは、出産を繰り返し、子牛が産めなくなった雌の経産牛など。肉質が悪く、ハンバーグなどの加工食品の原料などに使われることが多いという。

An overwhelming majority of the Dutch feel happy, according to research involving 7,000 people carried out by the Trimbos Institute.
Asked how often they had felt happy in the previous four weeks, 89% said 'often or more'. Asked to give their life marks out of 10, most give it 7.5 or eight, researcher Ad Bergsma told news agency ANP.
People who take anti-depressants also consider themselves to be happy, the research shows.
'One million people in the Netherlands may take anti-depressants but the idea that we are not a happy nation is just not true,' Bergsma said.

The Arab Spring will be even more significant and enduring than the historic operation that killed Osama bin Laden. And with bin Laden gone, it'll be harder for President Obama to justify spending more than $100 billion a year for military operations in Afghanistan.

Meh. The best way to get Mr. Arimichi off Japan Times is to *not* click on links to his articles and *not* write letters-to-the-editor in regards to his articles. At the same time, spend time viewing the other columnists, and occasionally write thoughtful letters in response to those writers.
When Japan Times sees a disproportionally low number of hits to Mr. Arimichi’s column, they’ll dump him. But so long as you guys keeping raising a stink, Japan Times gets numbers it can show to paying advertisers, which is all they’re really worried about.
(And if you *really* want to read his verbal discharge, I’m pretty certain he posts it on his blog, thereby conveniently allowing you to self-flagellate without tipping off Japan Times.)

Obviously there are differences between attacking character and attacking the argument.
This is a very basic in any discussion. I thought it was clear.
Suppose Tom says Today is Monday because yesterday was Saturday.
The statements that Tom seems very conscientious and sincere to me, Tom is stupid are about Tom, not his argument.
The former is praising Tom and the latter is attacking Tom.
Yesterday was Saturday but Sunday is the next day to Saturday therefore today is Sunday. Hence Tom’s conclusion is wrong―This is attacking Tom’s argument.
Suppose further Tom blocked the refutation above on his blog and I said blocking the refutation is not fair. I am not attacking Tom character, but I am attacking the way he runs the blog.
Did I make myself clear?

I think your comments are unbalanced, because you're making very extreme claims.
It's obvious Debito's not a racist. It's a silly and unsubstantial claim.
Then you go on to say that you are *not* saying Debito is a racist, but only that he acts like one.
That's not a discussion worth having.
I don't always agree with Debito, but I definitely think his heart is in the right place. The idea he acts like a racists is silly, spiteful and not worthy of a discussion.
I have only good things to say about him personally.
Why don't you translate your comments into Japanese and ask you readers whether they think your claims are extreme or not?
I don't have anything left to say on this matter.

もう一度言っておきますと、私が議論の対象にしているのは、ブログの内容と運営方針ですよ。
Mattさんが対象としているのは、有道氏本人です。conscientious and sincere not racist
しかし、それは有道氏が投稿している議論（主張＋理由）の妥当性とは関係ない。
Mattさんは有道氏の性格から、議論の妥当性を導こうとしている。しかし、それは明らかに誤謬です。
主張している人や運営している人が神様だろうが悪魔だろうが、事実でなければ事実でない、根拠が薄弱なら薄弱、運営方針が間違っていれば間違っている。ただ、それだけのことです。
主張者や運営者の性格から議論の妥当性・信頼性、運営方針の妥当性などを推論してしまうのは、非常に稚拙な推論ですが、議論になれていない人はやってしまいがちな、誤謬です。
いずれにせよ、Mattさんと僕の議論についての評価は、ぼくなら読者の判断にまかせますね。
