希羅聚銘：（第8回目）『ローマ史上唯一の車裂きの刑』

三人兄弟同士の戦闘に破れ、ローマに屈服させらたアルバの首長（dictator）メッティウスは、この恥辱を晴らそうと計画し、ローマの同胞であるフィデナエ市を味方につけ、ローマに対して戦争をしかけた。

フィデナエ市が公然とローマに叛旗を翻したので、ローマのトゥルス王はメッティウスとアルバ軍に召喚命令をだすと共に、自らアルバに進軍した。

Cum Fidenae aperte descissent, Tullus Mettio exercituque eius ab Alba accito contra hostes ducit.

【英訳】When Fidenaehad broken out into open revolt, Tullus summoned Mettius and his army from Alba and marched against the enemy.

ところが、今回の戦争を惹き起こした張本人である、アルバ首長のメッティウスは卑怯にもローマ軍と対峙した時、フィデナエ軍に気づかれないようにアルバ軍をこっそりと戦場から離脱させた。

残されたフィデナエ軍は瞬く間にローマ軍に押された。後ろが川で（背水之陣）逃げ場がなかった。中国の諺と異なり、フィデナエ軍の兵士は、川に飛び込んで逃げる者もいれば、ぐずぐずしている内に叩きのめされてしまう者もいた。ローマが戦ったそれまでの戦争で、この時ほど残酷な場面もなかった。

Nec illitulere impetum, sed ab effusa fuga flumen obiectum ab tergo arcebat. Quo postquam fuga inclinavit, alii arma foede iactantes in aquam caeci ruebant, alii dum cunctantur in ripis inter fugae pugnaeque consilium oppressi. Non alia ante Romana pugna atrocior fuit.

【英訳】They did not wait for the charge, but their flight was checked by the river in their rear. When they reached it,some, flinging away their arms, rushed blindly into the water,others, hesitating whether to fight or fly, were overtaken and slain. Never had the Romans fought in a bloodier battle.

戦いに勝利したトゥルス王はアルバ市民を赦し、ローマに移住するように命じた。ただ、メッティウスだけは、フィデナエ市を裏切った報いとして車裂きの刑に処することにした。

公開処刑に集まった人たちはこの残酷な刑の執行の瞬間には思わず目をそむけた。このような非人道的処刑はローマの長い歴史の中で最初で最後のケースだった。他のことはさておき、ローマほど刑が緩やかである民族はないと自慢してよかろう。

Avertere omnes ab tanta foeditate spectaculi oculos. Primum ultimumque illud supplicium apud Romanos exempli parum memoris legum humanarum fuit: in aliis gloriari licet nulli gentium mitiores placuisse poenas.

【英訳】All present averted their eyes from the horriblespectacle. This is the first and last instance amongst theRomans of a punishment so regardless of humanity. Amongst other things which are the glory of Rome is this, that no nation hasever been contented with milder punishments.

Livius（リウィウス）がこの歴史を書いた当時（紀元前後）は、まだ共和制の栄光の余韻が残っていて、刑の執行なども彼が自慢するように、他の諸外国（たぶん、大臣にも過酷な刑を施したことで悪名高いペルシャなど）と比較して穏やかだったのであろう。しかし、その穏やかな雰囲気も長くは続かなかった。その後数十年して、Tacitus（タキトゥス）や Suetonius（スウェトニウｓ）の描くローマ皇帝の暴虐は酸鼻をきわめる。
