名古屋市営地下鉄でのお話です。ある駅の改札口へのエレベーターが故障していて動きません。この駅にはもともと下りのエスカレーターは設置されていませんから地下鉄に乗るにはすべての人は階段で降りるしかありません。私のすぐ前には片手に手押し車を持ちながらもう一方の手は手すりにしがみついてゆっくりゆっくり降りている老婦人がいました。私はすぐにその手押し車を持ってあげました。
この地下鉄は大深度ですからしばらく行ってさらにまた階段を下らなければなりません。そしてやっと階段を下り終えた所で老婦人はその手押し車の袋を開けてお礼にと一片のバウムクーヘンを差し出したのです。こんなことぐらいでそれをいただいくわけにはいきませんから丁重に辞退しましたが聞き入れてもらえません。無理矢理私のシャツの胸ポケットにねじ込んでくれたのです。この世界一のプレゼントをありがたくいただくことにしました。私の方こそ感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。
