Amid Rise of Multiculturalism, Dutch Confront Their Questions of Identity

By STEVEN ERLANGER
Published: August 13, 2011

・・・・・
Mr. Wilders’ Freedom Party, which combines racist language with calls for more social spending, won 15.5 percent of the vote in June 2010. He was recently acquitted of charges of hate speech for comparing the Koran to “Mein Kampf” and calling mosques “palaces of hatred.” He wants all immigrants and their children deported and warns of the supposed Muslim plot to create “Eurabia.” He declined repeated interview requests.

While many Dutch recoil at his language, he touches on real fears. “Sometimes I’m afraid of Islam,” Ms. Kuhlman said. “They’re taking over the neighborhood and they’re very strong. I don’t love Wilders. He’s a pig, but he says what many people think.”
・・・・・
She remembered sunbathing topless on her balcony in the 1980s. “It’s inconceivable now,” she said. “Now my next-door neighbor doesn’t even greet me in the hallway, he can’t look at me, and it’s been 28 years,” Ms. Kuhlman said.

・・・・・

If part of the Dutch anxiety is about identity, there are similar concerns among Muslims here. There are two parallel sets of identity crises, said Ahmed Marcouch, 42, son of an illiterate Moroccan immigrant and now a Labor member of Parliament. Most Muslims came from poor, less educated parts of Morocco and eastern Turkey, and clung to traditional values and the mosque as bulwarks against a secular society that promoted individualism, gender equality and gay rights.

“They didn’t speak Dutch, they didn’t know Holland, and they saw the sexual revolution, feminism and youth anarchism as a provocation, as part of a decadent society
,” Mr. Marcouch said. He remembers his father saying with contempt, “Women are the bosses here.”

・・・・・

Their children, fluent in Dutch but not readily accepted, were even more at risk. A significant number, he concedes, turned to crime. They had their own identity problems, Mr. Marcouch said, asking: “Who am I? Where am I really from? Can I be Dutch?” He described his own son, 22, discussing these questions with his 10-year-old sister. “They won’t recognize you as a full citizen,” his son told her.

・・・・・
In the United States, citizenship once granted is never questioned, said Mr. Overbeek of VU University. “But in Europe it’s never quite established, no matter how long you’ve been here. Here it’s still, ‘When did you get here, and when are you going back?’ ”

Rick Perry targets Bible belt to ignite Republican race for the White House
A showdown between the Texas governor and Michele Bachmann could determine where the Christian vote will go

The Observer, Sunday 14 August 2011

The importance of the evangelical vote is huge, representing an estimated 40% of Republicans who will vote in the Iowa caucus, which is scheduled for February. Iowa, as the first of the contests, matters – helping to propel candidates to the front of the race and seeing others heading for oblivion.

The state of hate: Some see Montana as last best place for the white race
7:16 PM, Aug. 14, 2011

・・・・・
They are the people with the "most energy on the ground" among a rising number of white supremacist groups in the state, said Travis McAdam, executive director of the Montana Human Rights Network.

"In Montana it's been an interesting couple of years, as far as a real growth in white supremacists on the ground actually doing stuff in communities," he said.
・・・・・
Thirteen hate groups are active across the state, from Miles City to Kalispell, in Billings, Lewistown, Missoula, Helena and Bozeman.

Across the country, the number of hate groups is increasing as well. For the first time since the Southern Poverty Law Center began tracking hate groups in the 1980s, the number of American hate groups has topped 1,000.

Q&A with a white supremacist leader

Perhaps the most energetic race-focused group in Montana is the Montana Creativity Movement.

The group outlines at MontanaCreators.com its 16 commandments for the promotion of the white race and the exclusion of all others. Among the commandments: "Remember that the inferior colored races are our deadly enemies, and that the most dangerous of all is the Jewish race. It is our immediate objective to relentlessly expand the White Race, and keep shrinking our enemies."

The group rejects Christianity and celebrates the idea of "RaHoWa" (racial holy war).

White Criminals and Killer Ex-Cops Preferred at New York City's Fire Department

racist violence | racist policing | ba ra

A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
Historically, it has been very difficult for Blacks to find jobs in the firehouses of many major cities. But in New York, a good ole boy network apparently helps white ex-offenders become first responders, “thus perpetuating the extreme racial imbalance.” The FDNY even welcomed into its ranks two of the cops that mowed down Amadou Diallo, in 1999.
White Criminals and Killer Ex-Cops Preferred at New York City's Fire Department
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
“Nothing but the most brazen kind of good ole boy networking can explain why the fire departments of New York and so many big cities resemble job banks for white men – including those with records.”
Studies have shown that white job applicants who have done time in prison are more likely to get a call-back for an interview than Black men with no criminal record. Apparently, when it comes to getting a job as a New York City firefighter white ex-offenders are also first in line to be hired – or even have a line all to themselves if they have relatives and friends in the department.

A tepid response to race-based school bullying
Published: Sunday, August 14, 2011

It is the year 2011. Our society is more diverse than ever, anti-bullying campaigns are in full swing and equal opportunity is the law, yet the Franklin Township Board of Education appears to be stuck in the 1950s.
More alarming is the fact that there are students in this school district who were allowed to insult, castigate, berate and demean a black girl over a three-year period, with scant intervention by the overwhelmingly white school administrators.

・・・・・
According to the investigators from the civil rights division, this child, approximately 8 years old, was repeatedly and consistently referred to as a “nigger,” “darky,” “chocolate,” “ugly,” and “retarded.”

Flash Mobs in Philadelphia: Sorry PC America, They are a Racial Thing
By Erik Uliasz at 12:50 pm on Saturday August 13, 2011

For almost a year, police departments in several cities around the country, most noticeably in Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Chicago, are investigating "flash mob"-generated violence, in which packs of dozens or even hundreds of youths, organized through social media sites, appear seemingly out of nowhere to commit assaults, robberies, and other crimes against innocent bystanders.

But here is the dirty little secret that PC media has been tiptoeing around all summer―the perpetrators are African-American and the victims are mostly white.

Grieving father says racism still an issue in Britain

Murtaza Ali Shah
Sunday, August 14, 2011

BIRMINGHAM: The grieving father of one of the three British Pakistani men killed while protecting their neighbourhoods during the riots from the looters have spoken of the deep-rooted existence of racism in Britain.

Speaking to The News, Tariq Jahan, whose son Haroon Jahan was mown down by a car alongside real brothers Shahzad Ali and Abdul Musawar, said although he was born and brought up in Britain but it was clear that the immigrants were not accepted by the indigenous communities.

・・・・・
In a moving interview, the former nightclub bouncer, who now works as a delivery driver, said he only visited Pakistan occasionally with his family but “nobody in Pakistan tells me to ‘go back to your country’. I love Pakistan for that, it’s our country”. He said this in reference to the slogan used by racists who ask immigrants to leave Britain and go back to their countries. He said immigrants have still not been accepted in Britain and those from Pakistan who are dying to reach to these shores to make money should re-think if it’s worth it.
