As many of you fashion lovers know, Spring 2013 Bridal Market was in full swing last weekend. I couldn’t resist but sharing a little recap of the biggest trends on the runways of Bridal Fashion Week.

Trend #1: Whipped, Frothy Skirts　　軽くてフワッとしたスカート
Airy and ethereal, yet dramatic skirts floated down the runways pumping up the volume this season.

Trend #2: Cap-Sleeves キャプスリーブ
Who says strapless is queen? Since the whole fashion world is crazy about vintage these days, it is no wonder that vintage styles have been seen in today’s wedding dresses again and again. Cap sleeve is just one of the comebacks.

For the brides who subscribe to the "bigger is better" mantra, bridal designers are creating bold confections. Peplum skirts, embellished ribbon oversized bows and floral details stood out on the runways.

Trend #5: Lace レース
When it comes to classic, the lace has it. From hand-beaded to fluted-skirt to sleeved bodice a-la Kate Middleton, designers showed that lace still has a hold on runways and wedding aisles alike.

Trend #6: One-Shoulder　　ワンショルダー
One of the hottest bridal dress trends in 2012 is the one-shoulder wedding dress. Imagine an elegant and classic Grecian goddess look. These dresses are quite regal, not to mention they are gracing the red carpet on today’s hottest celebrities.

Trend #7: Sassy and Short 　サッシー＆ショート　小粋なショート
While, some brides are choosing to wear short, fun second wedding dress, many brides have been simply fetching the traditional floor-length gowns in favor of shorter, flirtier pieces. This season most designers included in their collections some sassy short dresses that would be perfect for partying all night long.

Trend #8: Red レッド　
Inspired by the traditional Chinese wedding colour palette and the celebration of love, top designers like Romona Keveza, Oscar De La Renta and Vera Wang showcased bridal gowns all dripping in the boldest, most luxurious red hues.

Greek-born, London-based designer Sophia Kokosalaki debuted her first collection of wedding dresses last January, infusing the line of 18 gowns with the same modern twist on classical drapery that has become her ready-to-wear signature. Now, with 2013 already on the horizon, we caught up with Kokosalaki to talk about her sophomore bridal collection (featuring nearly twice as many looks), the celebs she dreams of dressing, and how designing costumes for the 2004 Athens Olympics affected her Greek-centric style.

Being an established ready-to-wear name now crossing over into wedding attire, what should brides know about what you offer?
既製服（レディ・ツー・ウエァ）で知られたブランドがウェディングドレスに進出したことを受けて、花嫁たちは何をあなたに期待したらよいのでしょう？

We are often approached by women who are looking
for something alternative to the traditional wedding dress but with the same amount of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and impact. Most of them are not getting married in a church, and they are also looking for a dress that they could potentially wear again to a special event.

After your collaborations with Topshop and Asos in the past, how did Net-a-porter become the launch pad for your bridal collection?

Founder Natalie Massenet and buying director Holly Rogers suggested I create a bridal collection exclusively for them. Net-a-porter is more appropriate for the launch of such a high end product because they offer a fantastic service and global reach to the right customers.

How much attention are you paying to what a trend-conscious bride wants to wear—like peplums and color for the Spring 2013 season?

My approach is more that a wedding dress should be timeless and classically elegant so that when one looks back a few years down the line, the dress still looks modern and beautiful, not dated. Although of-the-moment trends are best to be avoided, it is still important for me that the dress has a contemporary feel and doesn't look like a vintage copy. This is achieved through the use of the materials, the cut, or the finishing.

Did directing the costumes for the Opening Ceremony of the Athens 2004 Olympics—which represented important eras in Greek history—impact your aesthetic as a designer?

My aesthetic hasn't changed much since then, but maybe my capacity for hard work and my capabilities increased. The principles that we applied then—attention to detail, balance, beauty, measure and strive for individuality—are still the same I always try to apply to my work. I wasn't just overseeing though, I worked a lot with my hands too, as all the costumes were made from scratch!
私のデザイナーとしての価値はそれ以後変わったとは思いませんが、私の仕事のキャパとそれをこなす能力は向上したと思います。　当時私が重視していた原則、即ちデテールに拘ること、バランス、ビューティそして個性に拘る姿勢は今でも仕事の基本として変わりありません。　私はそれらを常に念頭において私自らの手仕事で当たります、ですから全てのドレスは当初から手掛けるのです。


How do you assign your wedding dresses their classical Greek names?

It is actually an elaborate and tricky process, as most of the ancient greek figures in myths were either adulterous, vengeful, or murderous!
これは一寸大変で危なっかしいのですよ、なぜなら殆どのギリシャの神々はときに淫乱で、執念深かったり、凶悪だったりするものですから。

Helen is a particularly striking name for a dress (above), since Helen of Troy was said to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Why is this what you imagine her wearing?

We felt the dress is a bit like Helen—classically beautiful with a hint of drama.

How would you dress Pippa Middleton if she were getting married?

She has a very classic taste so I would adhere to that but I would try to add a small twist that gives the dress modernity.

Five trends—color, portrait backs, peplums, lace, and convertible gowns—dominated the Spring 2013 Bridal runways, together signaling a new direction for the American bride. She no longer feels bound to virginal all-white palettes, as heralded last season by Vera Wang's black-and-nude collection which gave way six months later to a stampede of crimson creations. Other designers known for their bold choices, such as Oscar de la Renta and Romona Keveza, also showed unconventional palettes, although while keeping their more traditional clientele in mind.

Last season's sexy backs returned for Spring 2013 having softened the focus on bare skin with sheer panels of tulle, re-worked lace, and keyhole closings. While the emphasis is still on the bride from reverse, it's with more romance than seduction that she holds our attention. Silhouettes in general gravitated toward coverage, a sign that Duchess Kate's Alexander McQueen wedding gown still reigns supreme a year after the royal wedding. Kate's choice of lace equated to a flood of the fabric across practically every runway, from Christos' ruffled cap sleeves to Jim Hjelm's slinky slit gown. "There's something about lace that pushes back on the technology-driven society we live it," notes Brides Fashion Director Rachel Leonard. "It's soft. It's romantic. It takes us away."

Peplums also offered a high-fashion escape this season, injecting wedding gowns with a dose of haute style using both structured and softly draped shapes. And brides needn't fear added volume at the hip—peplums of the right proportion are great for defining a waist on both boyish and curvy figures. Not sure which of spring's trends are right for you? Have them all with a convertible gown, which employs removable skirts, trains, and capes to transform your ceremony dress into a distinct reception look. Peel away Reem Acra's horsehair-trimmed tulle skirt, for example, and you're left with a glittering, bead-encrusted mini worth several spins on the dance floor.

Reem Acra
This cap-sleeve column gown with detachable tulle illusion skirt is a perfect play on the two-in-one trend. The silhouette is full yet ever-so-light, like a thin layer of crema. And Acra's signature ethereal beadwork throughout this number, in fact, does send us "over the moon."
