There have been countless accounts of violence recorded during the uprisings in Egypt, but the image that perhaps has captured the most attention is the most recent. The image has been widely referred to as the "girl in the blue bra."

The image quickly became a visual symbol of abuse of power by the Egyptian military. And today there are reports that Kamal al-Ganzouri, Egypt's military-appointed prime minister, has called for a national dialogue to resolve the country's crisis and for a two-month calm to restore safety.

While images and stories of women's-rights abuses are not hard to find, Kenny Irby, senior faculty for visual journalism at the Poynter Institute, says the image has become an icon for the sexist and brutal use of military power because "the frame captures the horror of excessive abuse which has elevated its status."

I live in an area in N.Calif. where a man was beaten severely then left to die in a jail. It must have looked very much like what was happening on the streets of Egypt. You would think this sort of thing happened long ago- not but 5 years. Now the Occupy protesters are under the rats of the same police department and being beaten many times for just being present or filming the police at work. This kind of work is obviously enjoyed by some of these police at in home Eureka Ca. and abroad. So looking at these photos and pointing at the Middle East as an uncivilized society is really missing the point. We (our government- all of it) should not be criticizing such acts until it makes an effort to clean up its own act.

I think women here should hold a march in solidarity with the women of Egypt. We should wear blue bras on the outside of our shirts or just the bra with jeans.
When things like this happen in one part of the world, we should all put it out in the open to shame it.
Brutality is brutality and some of the brutality seen here towards the Occupiers doesn't go by a different definition.
