The historian and broadcaster David Starkey has provoked a storm of criticism after claiming during a televised discussion about the riots that "the problem is that the whites have become black".

In an appearance on BBC2's Newsnight, Starkey spoke of "a profound cultural change" and said he had been re-reading Enoch Powell's rivers of blood speech.

"His prophesy was absolutely right in one sense. The Tiber did not foam with blood but flames lambent, they wrapped around Tottenham and wrapped around Clapham," he said.

"But it wasn't inter-community violence. This is where he was absolutely wrong." Gesturing towards one of the other guests, Owen Jones, who wrote Chavs: the Demonisation of the Working Classes, Starkey said: "What has happened is that a substantial section of the chavs that you wrote about have become black."

On the programme, Starkey said: "The whites have become black. A particular sort of violent destructive, nihilistic gangster culture has become the fashion and black and white boys and girls operate in this language together.

"This language which is wholly false, which is this Jamaican patois that has been intruded in England and that is why so many of us have this sense of literally of a foreign country."

BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN
Why American men should boycott American women

“American women are generally immature, selfish, extremely arrogant and self-centered, mentally unstable, irresponsible and highly unchaste,” reads a side-panel frame that provides what little information for the blog that is offered. “The behavior of most American women is utterly disgusting, to say the least,” it continues.
“This blog is my attempt to explain why I feel American women are inferior to foreign women (non-American women), and why American men should boycott American women, and date/marry only foreign (non-American) women.”
Most of the posts published to Boycott American Women, hosted on Blogspot.com, quote angry American males that usually only give their name and location. “Tom in Washington” writes in December that American women need to get used to living alone “or else become a lesbian.” A week later, “Gary in Kentucky” warns women that “American men no longer find you desirable.”
In some instances, the webmaster posts essays attributed to no one, brimming with sexist accusations and angst-riddled verbal rapes. “American feminist women caused the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan” is the name of one entry in particular, while another calls out American women for chewing too much bubble gum (which he alleges causes temporary retardation stemming from the inclusion of the chemical aspartame). Another lists the “Three Reasons Why American Women Suck,” which includes obesity, “credit card blowout greed” and, of course, “feminist anger and psychosis.”
“American women are no damn good anymore,” writes the author.
Though the other posts are attributed to people like “Steven in Canada” (in the entry “Canada male thinks American women are whores”) and “Michael from Detroit” (author of the brilliant prose entitled “American women are vicious sociopaths”), there does not appear to be any place on the entire site where Steves and Mikes can actually submit their contributions.
In the info listed for the blog, the webmaster describes himself as an American man that has decided to boycott American women. “In a nutshell, American women are the most likely to cheat on you, to divorce you, to get fat, to steal half of your money in the divorce courts, don't know how to cook or clean, don't want to have children, etc,” he writes.
“Therefore, what intelligent man would want to get involved with American women?” he concludes.
Well, if you ask “Ben in Canada,” the answer is simple: “The one good thing about American Women is that they are such sluts.”
The most recent entry, “An American Woman admits most American women are stupid” comes courtesy of “Denise from California.” In the post, dated August 11, 2011, Denise says she is one of the few beautiful, educated and sophisticated women in America, but typically has to “dumb-down” her conversations when speaking with others of her gender.
“Clueless American women also insist on feminizing their men, and then they're so surprised when their husbands leave,” she writes.
Meanwhile, a quick survey of the female correspondents in RT's Washington DC bureau has revealed that maybe it is the men behind the blog that should be boycotted, and not the women.

A video posted online depicting a group of youths appearing to help a young Malaysian student who was mugged during the London riots, and then stealing the contents of his bag, has been widely circulating.

The footage is just one moment captured on video in recent days showing an ugly side to a city often considered as civilised or forward-looking.

Hundreds of people have been charged with robbery, arson and violent disorder. But some of those arrested say they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Many of the people arrested in the riots are young and unemployed, some analysts point to the economic situation as a contributing factor.

But others say it's the way young people are perceived by the authorities that has left them so angry.

Bill James lashes out again, declares Charlotte Blacks living in moral sewage

After what seemed like a long absence from local news headlines, Bill James is making new headlines with more race-based rhetoric taking aim at Charlotte’s black community. Riding the buzz generated by comments from black Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, James created his own buzz by adding his two-cents to the story in an email he sent to fellow commissioners. Referring to the mostly black youth that participated in violent flash-mob robberies in Philadelphia, Mayor Nutter said, “You damaged your own race”. Mecklenburg County Commissioner Bill James is not black nor does he live or volunteer regularly in any of Charlotte's majority-minority districts but nonetheless the comments appear to have struck a chord with him.

Perhaps the Mayor’s comments to the black community sounded familiar because in 2004, Commissioner Bill James wrote that the black community was a “moral sewer”. While James apologized for the 2004 comments, that apology seems a lot less sincere with his decision to make a new comment declaring that Philly, “Just like Charlotte ... the Moral Sewer erupts across America.

Police to revisit investigation into racist graffiti outside home
Case originally probed as simple vandalism
By LAURA FRASER and IAN FAIRCLOUGH Staff Reporters
Fri, Aug 12 - 4:54 AM

An Eastern Passage mother expected a visit from the RCMP Thursday night, another checkup since she awoke last week to find racist graffiti outside her home.

Initially, the Mounties treated the incident as a simple act of vandalism, but they are now looking at whether Chantelle Paris and her family were targeted because of their skin colour.

Paris glanced out her window Aug. 2 and saw a swastika and a racial slur spray-painted on the road alongside arrows pointing to her house.

"At first I was panicked, because I wasn’t sure what I was looking at," she said Thursday.

"There were so many things running through my mind (and) I didn’t know whether I should be scared (or) if somebody was outside waiting."

Paris and her husband, who have two young children, haven’t had any other trouble since they moved to Osborne Drive in February. She says they are the only black family on the street.

Department Of Justice Charges Three Louisiana Men With Civil Rights Violations For Intimidating High School Students

The Justice Department today announced that three men were charged for their role in intentionally attempting to intimidate and interfere with African-American students who were attending Beekman Junior High School in Beekman, Morehouse Parish, La.

According to the bill of information filed in the District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, on or about Nov. 6, 2007, Brian Wallis, James Lee Wallis Jr. and Tony L. Johnson, acting together, tied a noose around a dead raccoon’s neck and hung it from the flagpole located in front of Beekman Junior High School.

The bill of information further alleges that the three men hung the raccoon in the noose to intimidate and interfere with the African-American students because of their race and color and because they were attending Beekman Junior High School, which is a public school.

Riots were a long time coming for black Britons
By Lola Adesioye

The main issue is that England and Londoners refuses to deal in any substantive way with its pressing issues. This violence is as a result of, among other things, unexamined racial issues, a crumbling sense of community among black people with no real leadership, unresolved class issues, social exclusion coupled with a lack of opportunities, a deep recession in addition to an extremely high cost of living, a new government who has been cutting back on services for youth, disenfranchised young people, and a dependency culture all rolled into one. As we've seen, this is a deeply dangerous combination.
Nobody in England likes to talk about race. Londoners prefer to pretend or perhaps they really believe -- that the city is a melting pot, where everyone lives side by side in peace and harmony.
Statistics will tell you that while, superficially, people of all races may live side by side in inner city areas (as they certainly don't in London's wealthier areas), there is a major lack of opportunity for them. Black people are underrepresented in all areas of public British life from politics, to economics; educationally, we lag far behind, and we are overrepresented in crime and incarceration

England, still a bastion of tradition, also doesn't really know what to do with this new generation of British-born black youth. Unlike our parents or grandparents who came to England as immigrants, British born blacks are unwilling to act as if England is a host nation which must simply accommodate them because it isn't. It is our home. It is for many the only place that they have ever known, so it is understandably frustrating for many to have second-class citizen status. Back in the late 70s and early to mid 80s, black people dealing with similar frustrations, also used violence -- in some of these same parts of London -- as a tactic to get heard. It seems not much has changed.
Although these latest riots started in Tottenham, as they have spread, the ethnic mix of the rioters has diversified. Why? Because social exclusion and disenfranchisement also runs along class lines in England, still a deeply class-orientated society.Class in England is different from in the U.S. In England, people generally don't move classes -- you end up where you were born. It is not based on how much money you may have today, as it might be in the U.S., but on who your parents are, your background and where you went to school. In England, on that basis, a rich person could still be considered working class.
So now it seems, the white working class youth are also frustrated and fed up. They too have had enough it seems. The British middle classes openly call them chavs a derogatory term to denote lower or working class people -- and scum, while politicians refer to them as the underclass. In the past few years, the media has stoked up the notion that the white working class population is treated as badly, if not worse, than its black counterparts, with the BBC even putting on a white season of TV programming to show how hard the white youth have it these days.
The welfare dependency culture of the UK also discourages personal responsibility or self reliance, and many of these young people simply feel entitled and that they deserve a hand out -- which they are not getting from a society that seems not to even care about them.
London -- and England -- is now dealing with black kids, white kids and indeed most likely children from other ethnicities who all have their axes to grind, who feel victimized and oppressed and excluded in their own country with few opportunities. With no place to go to, nowhere for their voices to be heard, violence seems an easy answer. With a media looking for its next juicy story and instantaneous, free communication tools at hand -- it has been reported that Blackberry Messenger has been the main organizing tool for the riots, and it has allowed the quick spread of the violence from place to place -- suddenly the previously disenfranchised now have some power, destructive as it may be.
Although I don't condone this violence, I hope that some important lessons will be learned. It's time for England to get talking about and taking action on its issues. It's time for it to address its issues about race and to start looking at what the future is for black Briton.
It's time for it to address its class-ism and the way in which those at the top look down at those who are considered to be below them.
It's time for them to address the breakdown of the family and of the community. It is also high time for the black population to take a long hard look at itself and find some answers, some solutions and start taking responsibility for its young

These riots were about race. Why ignore the fact?
By Katharine Birbalsingh

What colour is Mark Duggan? Mark Duggan is the man who was shot dead by the police on Thursday in Tottenham. The Tottenham riots last night were sparked when people protested his death. This morning, I first heard of the riots on the radio, then on the television. I read articles on the internet. But oddly, no one would say what colour Mark Duggan was. No one would say the unsayable, that the rioters were, I suspect on the whole, black. Then, finally, Toby Young’s Telegraph blog post on the riots was published. Is Toby Young the only journalist out there who will dare say that these riots are about race?

Riot police had to come out in force in Eltham last night after a community gathering was hijacked by racist thugs.

Hundreds of men were chanting and running amok in the south London town and were kettled by police officers to prevent them from marching to Lewisham at around 8pm.

A report from south London newspaper, the News Shopper, recorded that as the crowd was pushed back against a wall, one man was overheard on his phone saying:

“It’s going to kick off. A n****r is going to get it tonight.”

“Unfortunately, members of the EDL came to Eltham to cause trouble and exploit this situation against the backdrop of all the other things that are happening. Because of them, police were prevented from doing work elsewhere to come here. I am furious about that at a time when police resources are already thin.”

How Hispanics Are Messing Everything Up
Posted: 8/10/11 11:01 PM ET

The rapid growth of the U.S. Hispanic market these past couple of decades is messing up just about everything regarding dominant norms on race and ethnicity in the United States. It was once so easy. The post-war era ushered in an ethnic/race system of classification of what Berkeley historian David Hollinger has called the identity pentagon of Black, White, Brown, Red or Yellow. All Americans could be placed into their respective color bucket and that was that. Hispanics were Brown, and could clearly be associated as foreign and maybe not quite "American".

Well, as Hispanics have grown from 5% to 16% of the population, this system is starting to be stretched, pulled and frayed. See, Hispanics are an ethnicity, not a race, and as such some are White, Brown, Black, Yellow

CAGLE MOUNTAIN, Tenn. ― The Jenkins family is like many of their neighbors in Sequatchie County: They’re retired; they served in the U.S. armed forces; they moved from out of state to the Sequatchie Valley to enjoy a quiet life.

But because of their differences, the Jenkinses say they feel they have become the target of racial terrorism since moving to Cagle Mountain in 2005 ― they’re black, American-born Muslims from California who are new to the rural South, where blacks sometimes are still called

Richmond city workers complain of racism

Published: August 11, 2011

The Richmond Department of Public Utilities, rocked in April after nine employees were charged with falsely claiming overtime pay, now faces allegations of racial discrimination against black workers.

Twelve pipefitters in the department's water division, all but one of them black, filed a discrimination complaint with the Richmond Department of Human Resources in March. One white employee signed the initial petition but subsequently transferred to another department.

Their allegations include open use of racial epithets by white employees and supervisors, as well as favoritism toward whites in hiring and promotion.

"Their jobs are the most dangerous, labor-intensive, dirtiest and lowest-paying in the department," said former City Councilman Sa'ad El-Amin, president of the Employment Advocacy Center, who is representing the pipefitters. "They are regularly subjected to apartheid employment practices and policies."

The Princeton Club is getting smacked with a failing grade from a former employee who says the exclusive Ivy League enclave prefers white, English-speaking employees.

Jo-Ann Garcia, who was fired in March as the payroll manager at the elite W. 43rd St. clubhouse, has filed a $10 million age- and race-discrimination suit against the club that employed her for nearly 30 years.

The 51-year-old Amenia, N.Y. woman contends she was forced out in favor of a younger, English-speaking employee by club management that ordered workers to avoid using Spanish in front of guests or in public areas.

"We felt like we were being segregated," Garcia said of Spanish-speaking employees at the club.

How America criminalised poverty
The viciousness of state officials to the poor and homeless is breathtaking, trapping them in a cycle of poverty

Barbara Ehrenreich for TomDispatch, part of the Guardian Comment Network
guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 10 August 2011

At the time I wrote Nickel and Dimed, I wasn't sure how many people it directly applied to – only that the official definition of poverty was way off the mark, since it defined an individual earning $7 an hour, as I did on average, as well out of poverty. But three months after the book was published, the Economic Policy Institute in Washington DC issued a report entitled "Hardships in America: The Real Story of Working Families", which found an astounding 29% of American families living in what could be more reasonably defined as poverty, meaning that they earned less than a barebones budget covering housing, child care, health care, food, transportation, and taxes – though not, it should be noted, any entertainment, meals out, cable TV, Internet service, vacations, or holiday gifts. Twenty-nine percent is a minority, but not a reassuringly small one, and other studies in the early 2000s came up with similar figures.

When you read about the hardships I found people enduring while I was researching my book – the skipped meals, the lack of medical care, the occasional need to sleep in cars or vans – you should bear in mind that those occurred in the best of times. The economy was growing, and jobs, if poorly paid, were at least plentiful.

How have the already-poor attempted to cope with their worsening economic situation? One obvious way is to cut back on health care. The New York Times reported in 2009 that one-third of Americans could no longer afford to comply with their prescriptions and that there had been a sizable drop in the use of medical care. Others, including members of my extended family, have given up their health insurance.

Food is another expenditure that has proved vulnerable to hard times, with the rural poor turning increasingly to "food auctions", which offer items that may be past their sell-by dates. And for those who like their meat fresh, there's the option of urban hunting. In Racine, Wisconsin, a 51-year-old laid-off mechanic told me he was supplementing his diet by "shooting squirrels and rabbits and eating them stewed, baked and grilled". In Detroit, where the wildlife population has mounted as the human population ebbs, a retired truck driver was doing a brisk business in raccoon carcasses, which he recommends marinating with vinegar and spices.

In Los Angeles, housing expert Peter Dreier says that "people who've lost their jobs, or at least their second jobs, cope by doubling or tripling up in overcrowded apartments, or by paying 50 or 60 or even 70% of their incomes in rent". According to a community organiser in Alexandria, Virginia, the standard apartment in a complex occupied largely by day labourers has two bedrooms, each containing an entire family of up to five people, plus an additional person laying claim to the couch.

No one could call suicide a "coping strategy", but it is one way some people have responded to job loss and debt. There are no national statistics linking suicide to economic hard times, but the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline reported more than a four-fold increase in call volume between 2007 and 2009, and regions with particularly high unemployment, such as Elkhart, Indiana, have seen troubling spikes in their suicide rates. Foreclosure is often the trigger for suicide – or, worse, murder-suicides that destroy entire families.

Take the case of Kristen and Joe Parente, Delaware residents who had always imagined that people turned to the government for help only if "they didn't want to work". Their troubles began well before the recession, when Joe, a fourth-generation pipe-fitter, sustained a back injury that left him unfit for even light lifting. He fell into a profound depression for several months, then rallied to ace a state-sponsored retraining course in computer repairs – only to find that those skills are no longer in demand. The obvious fallback was disability benefits, but – catch-22 – when Joe applied he was told he could not qualify without presenting a recent MRI scan. This would cost $800 to $900, which the Parentes do not have; nor has Joe, unlike the rest of the family, been able to qualify for Medicaid.

When they married as teenagers, the plan had been for Kristen to stay home with the children. But with Joe out of action and three children to support by the middle of this decade, Kristen went out and got waitressing jobs, ending up, in 2008, in a "pretty fancy place on the water". Then the recession struck and she was laid off.

Kristen is bright, pretty, and to judge from her command of her own small kitchen, probably capable of holding down a dozen tables with precision and grace. In the past she'd always been able to land a new job within days; now there was nothing. Like 44% of laid-off people at the time, she failed to meet the fiendishly complex and sometimes arbitrary eligibility requirements for unemployment benefits. Their car started falling apart.

So the Parentes turned to what remains of welfare – TANF, or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. TANF does not offer straightforward cash support like Aid to Families with Dependent Children, which it replaced in 1996. It's an income supplementation program for working parents, and it was based on the sunny assumption that there would always be plenty of jobs for those enterprising enough to get them.

After Kristen applied, nothing happened for six weeks – no money, no phone calls returned. At school, the Parentes' seven-year-old's class was asked to write out what wish they would present to a genie, should a genie appear. Brianna's wish was for her mother to find a job because there was nothing to eat in the house, an aspiration that her teacher deemed too disturbing to be posted on the wall with the other children's requests.

When the Parentes finally got into "the system" and began receiving food stamps and some cash assistance, they discovered why some recipients have taken to calling TANF "Torture and Abuse of Needy Families." From the start, the TANF experience was "humiliating", Kristen says. The caseworkers "treat you like a bum. They act like every dollar you get is coming out of their own paychecks".

How the safety net became a dragnet

The most shocking thing I learned from my research on the fate of the working poor in the recession was the extent to which poverty has indeed been criminalised in America.

Most cities, for example, have ordinances designed to drive the destitute off the streets by outlawing such necessary activities of daily life as sitting, loitering, sleeping, or lying down. Urban officials boast that there is nothing discriminatory about such laws: "If you're lying on a sidewalk, whether you're homeless or a millionaire, you're in violation of the ordinance," a St Petersburg, Florida, city attorney stated in June 2009, echoing Anatole France's immortal observation that "the law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges."

"Can you imagine?" asked Eric Sheptock, the homeless advocate (himself a shelter resident) who introduced me to Szekeley. "They arrested a homeless man in a shelter for being homeless?

For the not-yet-homeless, there are two main paths to criminalisation, and one is debt. Anyone can fall into debt, and although we pride ourselves on the abolition of debtors' prison, in at least one state, Texas, people who can't pay fines for things like expired inspection stickers may be made to "sit out their tickets" in jail.

More commonly, the path to prison begins when one of your creditors has a court summons issued for you, which you fail to honour for one reason or another, such as that your address has changed and you never received it. OK, now you're in "contempt of the court".

The Pols Rise in England Again
Back to the Future
by William Bowles
written by William Bowles

Exactly thirty years ago Brixton exploded with rage against the de facto occupation of Brixton by the Met police. And, as I write this, all kinds of madness is going down in various parts of London and elsewhere.

"The Scarman Report was one of the most influential reports in postwar Britain, yet despite criticism of the police they escaped blame for the events in Brixton. For years black youth had been subjected to intense racist policing. The riots erupted at the end of the first week of an operation called ‘Swamp 81′ in which the area had been flooded with more than 100 plainclothes cops. In two days they stopped more than 1,000 people and arrested over 100–twice the normal weekly average. As the Daily Mirror said, ‘Nobody rules the streets of London, Brixton, or even Railton Road except the Metropolitan Police.’ Riots started after extremely high levels of police harassment." ― ‘Can the police be reformed?‘, Socialist Review, March 1999[1]

Predictably, the politicians and the police have been alleging that it was “criminal elements from the outside” or, “copycat criminal activity” that caused the ‘lootin’ anna burnin’ in Tottenham and elsewhere over this past weekend. How true this is or what relevance it has to this working class North London community is not explained.

Ugly BBC Interview Touches on Deeper Issues in London Riots

URI FRIEDMAN AUG 09, 2011

The interview begins inauspiciously, with the anchor, Fiona Armstrong, asking Howe, who's talking to her from Croydon, a leading question: "Are you shocked by what you've seen there last night?" To her surprise, Howe says he isn't: "Our political leaders had no idea, our police had no idea. But if you looked at young blacks and young whites with a discerning eye and a careful hearing, they have been telling us, and we would not listen that what is happening in this country to them is wrong." He later scoffs at Armstrong's suggestions that he might condone the looting or have a history of participating in violent riots, telling the anchor to "have some respect for an old West Indian Negro."

Video: Fliers Blame Interracial Relationship For Murder-Suicide

Police said Amanda Borsos was shot and killed Aug. 3 by her ex-boyfriend, Troy Penn, in Deerfield Township. It was Borsos’ 17th birthday.

The fliers were left on cars in the area where Borsos was killed. The fliers were addressed to “White Parents,” with a headline that read, “Don’t Let Your Daughters Date Blacks, It Might Be A Matter Of Life And Death.”

Borsos was white. Penn was black.

“Some bigot came in the middle of the night, skulking in the middle of the night, putting this on people’s cars,” said resident Greg Stanforth.

The flier specifically references Borsos. “Last week another young white woman learned too late that the ‘wonders’ of diversity are not what they are made out to be by the establishment,” read the flier.

At the bottom of the fliers is a phone number and website address for the National Alliance, a white separatist political organization

Nevada Official Under Fire For Alleged Racist Comments About Hispanics

According to the L.A. Times, Matson compared Hispanics to “locusts,” saying pregnant Latinas were carrying “anchor babies.” Also, according to the paper, Matson told the sheriff she was fearful of “Mexican/Latino, non-English speaking” construction workers building a nearby jail.

The letter includes a second picture of a sign that makes a generic statement to send “exstreme (sic) radicals” back to the “hole they came out off (sic).”

CHICAGO―In 2004, in an effort to study and identify alleged patterns of racial profiling and bias during police traffic stops, the State of Illinois began requiring every law enforcement agency to provide data on traffic stops. The results then showed blacks and Latinos were more likely to be pulled over than whites for a traffic stop and more than two and a half times more likely than whites to have their car’s contents searched when pulled over.

ICE accused of whitewashing abusive actions

Warrantless searches, harassment among allegations
By Eartha Jane Melzer | 08.09.11 |

In April ICE Director John Morton met with community groups in Detroit and promised to investigate reports that officers triggered panic and disrupted learning by following parents as they dropped off and picked up their kids at Hope of Detroit Academy and Neinas Elementary School in predominately Latino Southwest Detroit.

According to the Alliance for Immigrants Rights and Reform Michigan, the incidents at the schools are part of a pattern of Detroit area ICE agent behavior that has included warrantless searches, a mother strip searched in front of her son, detainees, including a pregnant woman, denied needed medicines in jail, an immigrant shoved through a wall by agents, and harassment of American citizens.

The ICE Office of Professional Responsibility report on the investigation into these incidents, however, found that officers did not engage in any abuse or professional misconduct.

Racist graffiti sparks concerns in Northwest Pasadena

PASADENA - Racist graffiti scrawled on walls, mailboxes and cars in Northwest Pasadena had residents and leaders across the city in an uproar Tuesday and hoping the vandalism doesn't spark violence.
Vandals spray painted swastikas, racial and homophobic slurs in and around Kings Village, a Northwest Pasadena apartment complex.

"I was trying to block my kids from seeing it and I hoped they didn't see it," said Olivia Sanchez, a resident of Kings Village.

Hopkins added that a sour economy could mix with racial tensions to push the Pasadena well past the tipping point.

"The riots we saw in Watts - and in the past - you are going to see them again," he said.

Native American Images in Video Games
by LATOYA PETERSON on AUGUST 9, 2011 · 4 COMMENTS AND 33 REACTIONS

Minority representation in video games just straight up sucks. Over the last few weeks, two new projects debuted that focus specifically on Native Americans.

The first is a short video. Directed and narrated by Irish, Anishinaabe, Metis writer Beth Aileen Lameman and edited by Beaver Lake Cree filmmaker Myron Lameman, the video looks at really common stereotypes being deployed in game narratives. Lameman points to the common framings of “cowboys vs. indians,” guides, and “wise old Indians” and heavy doses of the white savior narrative and the “half-breed hero” trope.

Discrimination Suit Filed Against PricewaterhouseCoopers

Accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers is now facing a discrimination suit filed by a former employee of the Big Four auditing firm, on claims that he was fired three years ago because of his religion and of his critical remarks on the firm’s diversity practices.

Issam Azziz, 38, an Arab-American of Moroccan descent living in Citrus Park, filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court. PricewaterhouseCoopers on January similarly faced discrimination suit filed by Dunstan Pedropillai, 47, a Sri Lankan who has been working as a partner at the firm for 25 years on a £933,480 annual salary, for slashing his pay allegedly on grounds of racial discrimination.

“What happened to me shouldn’t have happened to any other person,” Azziz told reporters.

Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner Warns Of Rise In Racism Via Internet, Phones

Racism has crept into everyday life over the past few years through the growth of the internet and mobile phone use, outgoing Race and Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes says.

Mr Innes said the world’s future was online, which was great for connecting ethnic communities and indigenous people but he warned of the dangers it posed.

The proliferation of race-hate websites and materials breed and incite racial world hatred and our cyber racism complaints at the commission have doubled in the last couple of years,” Mr Innes said. “Racism online means that racism in classrooms, workplaces and communities moves from onto our screens into our pockets and handbags.”

Last month in Canada police raided a home where a man allegedly killed his mother and was threatening to kill his sister. Instead they found Jason Myles, a software consultant, who was alone in his apartment, reported Mail Online
Myles told the Toronto Star: 'As soon as I heard it was the police I knew it had to be a mistake of some kind. There was nothing going on in the apartment that would warrant any kind of police response.’
Police searched Myles’ home for the alleged victims, but came up empty handed. The mother and sister were not found.
It is believed that these phony calls are coming from hackers who are likely using Voice over Internet Protocol to make it seem the emergency call is coming from inside the victim’s home.
A week prior to Myles run in with the law, 18 police units stormed a home in British Columbia after a call of a hostage situation was reported at the residence.A woman was taken into custody at the home and detained for approximately two hours while police verified there was no threat present.

The World from Berlin
'Riots Reveal the Decay of British Society'

Observers have come up with a myriad of explanations for the wave of violence. The initial rioting on Saturday appears to have been at least partially motivated by long-simmering resentment among the black community at heavy-handed policing. But the people involved in rioting since then have been white and Asian as well as black. Rising social exclusion, high youth unemployment and inequality has also been blamed, especially as the British government has recently announced far-reaching austerity measures.
But there also seems to be an element of recreational rioting and a desire to challenge the authorities.

"It is no coincidence that intelligent observers are drawing parallels between the popular uprisings taking place in the Arab spring and the street battles of this London summer. The British teens, with their hooded tops may be the citizens of a functioning democracy which is proud of being the world's oldest. But elections mean nothing to them and will not do anything to change their personal situation. The prospects of these youth in London are as dismal as those of young people in Cairo or Sana'a:

"The riots reveal fundamental societal problems that extend far beyond London and England. They are too deep for the short-term austerity measures to have had much influence. There wasn't just looting in troubled areas, but also in the affluent district of Notting Hill and among the middle class in trendy Clapham. The riots reveal the decay of society at its edges, brought on by deeply cemented inequality, the erosion of social norms, great frustration and a lack of opportunity for the lower class."

"The British elite has systematically compromised itself in recent years. They claimed to be a role model, or at least trustworthy. In the economic crisis the financial establishment declared bankruptcy, and British politicians became mired in the expenses scandal of 2009. Then this year the media and politicians have been damaged by the Murdoch scandal. When the country's elites don't take the law seriously, why should we? No question is more dangerous for a society."

"The country has lost faith in every authority: the banks, politicians, the media, the police. The corruption has reached even the smallest unit -- the family. There is a generation growing up without values of any kind."

"Even when the fires are quelled and the streets are cleaned, the deeper problems will remain. Britain must have a debate over its values. They actually need someone like [controversial German anti-immigration author] Thilo Sarrazin who speaks the uncomfortable truths. Perhaps David Cameron, the super-rich prime minister with the baroness wife, who now has to lead Britain through hard times, would be a good person to do some plain talking. But everything will probably remain the same. The Brits will fall back into their standard stoic mentality. 'Keep Calm and Carry On.' Until the next riot."

The conservative Die Welt writes:
"The unrest in London is a form of hooliganism by losers who are living in a society which no longer has anything left to offer losers. Among the arsonists are people who no longer possess any values. They've gotten used to drawing money from the state and they complain when the handouts stop coming as generously as they did in the past. This is a problem that, within the foreseeable future, many more Europeans are going to be confronted with, including many young people. This is because most European countries have been living far beyond their means. They will, without exception, be forced to cut back their spending."

The biggest lesson of the French riots is that more jobs are needed

France must learn several broader lessons from these riots. Start with policing methods. As Britain found in the early 1980s in Brixton and Toxteth, a tough, locally unaccountable police force that routinely harasses people from ethnic minorities can easily foster a climate in which seemingly minor incidents lead to mass outbreaks of violence.

nobody doubts that the real roots of the trouble lie in the social and economic alienation of the largely Muslim population that has for two generations been isolated in the grim banlieues around so many French cities.

It is, of course, the outsiders, especially the young, unskilled and ill-educated who come disproportionately from ethnic minorities, who pay the price―and it is these people who have led the riots.

UK Think Tank Claims Racial Tensions Have Nothing To Do With London Riots

According to Max Wind-Cowie, head of the Progressive Conservatism Project at the left-leaning think-tank Demos, the riots are more a product of cultural inequality. In short, how people are brought up.

“This is just unchecked anti-social behaviour,” says Wind-Cowie. “And it’s not localised to London. A feature of many deprived communities in the UK is a poor level of parenting, which manifests itself as mistrust towards authority.

The only way to get round this is by instilling proper values in children.

“There seems to be a knee-jerk reaction to run to race to ascribe blame. This is not about race at all. The rioters themselves are not uniformly black or Asian, but they do have commonalities. As David Lamie [MP for Tottenham] pointed out, the vast majority of people came from outside Tottenham. It was petty criminal gangs.”

London Riots: Social Inequality And Cuts Come To The Fore

Tuesday, 9 August, 2011 - 14:40

Already there is discussion about the possible root causes of this rioting. The actions of racist police who are known to harrass poor black youths, sometimes unfairly through, for example, abusing their stop and search powers is said to be one possible cause. Another is the ongoing poverty and chronic unemployment experienced by young people, particularly in boroughs such as Tottenham.

Therefore, areas such as Tottenham were a powder keg waiting to go off with all the key ingredients there - increasing police brutality, growing social inequality and government cuts.

And Britons should only look across the Atlantic at how police brutality sparked off similar violence in the United States. Remember the Los Angeles riots of April 1992? These followed the acquittal of four LA police officers for assaulting a black man, Rodney King. As in London, much of the ethnic black and Latino populations of those cities lived in poverty and experienced police harrassment.

When people start reporting they were being beaten by black people for no other reason than being white people at the State Fair, that’s pretty disturbing.

For most of the summer, Philadelphia cops have dealt with a series of so-called flash mobs that turned violent, scores of young blacks roaming the center city area and attacking mostly white pedestrians and shoppers.

On Friday, Nutter said he would increase police street patrols and enforce curfews for young people. The city’s curfew ordinance says children under the age of 13 must be home by 10 p.m., and young people between the ages of 13 and 18 must be home by midnight.

Washington and Las Vegas to the list of cities experiencing this phenomenon and discusses another pastime: “a game called ‘Knockout King,’ played primarily by black teenagers, where the point is to approach and quickly strike a stranger, often whites or immigrants, in an attempt to knock them unconscious with the first punch.”

As to the phenomenon, it points to an important trend I’ve been reviewing in a series of posts on the state of Black America. What was once a cohesive community is fragmenting in several directions.

The lines of communication between the Black poor and the Black elite have largely broken down. (A similar process has taken place among whites.) President Obama has had little to say in the White House about the desperately deteriorating situation of Black America ― much less about the disproportionate effect cuts in government spending will have on African Americans looking to government to provide jobs or to deliver services.

Given the toll the Great Recession has taken on what were already poor job and life prospects for inner city youth, and given the divide that increasingly leaves poor and marginal Black youth feeling abandoned by Black as well as white leaders, there is reason for concern about the potential for disturbing and violent developments.

The 2005 riots in France and the more recent riot in London tell us that youth and unemployment can be a bad mix; violent flash mobs should remind us that the same thing can happen here and in the age of social media, violent crowds can appear where and when law enforcement can’t cope.

This accursed “blank slate” propaganda denies our eight century history of British derived laws and principles since Magna Carta was signed in 1215 A.D. The truth is that the vast majority of Canadians expect newcomers to respect the laws and culture they came to join. Immigrants are not welcome to impose upon us their peculiar alien laws, practices and anti-Canadian mores. Just ask the average Canadian that has had a couple of beers what is expected of immigrants and he or she will tell you bluntly that:

“I don’t care where they come from so long as they join with us, work hard and help build our country and if they can’t do that, then send them back to wherever they came from.” That’s what new immigrants swore to do when they took the oath of allegiance and that’s what we expect of them

From angry public xenophobic outbursts and taxi drivers they say overlook them in favour of picking up Koreans, to unfriendly locals shifting uneasily away from them on public transportation, their list of complaints runs the gamut of perceived racial prejudice. Their own critics, though, argue that a significant proportion of these young critics arrive in the country armed with little Korean language or cultural skills, meaning it’s all less a racial discrimination issue than a communication breakdown.

No-turbans-allowed email racist, says Sikh job hunter

"Hats and caps are not part of our uniform and we can therefore not allow turbans."

Recent immigrant Sundeep Singh, who is looking for a job, was forwarded the First Security email by a friend and was shocked at "how racist it sounds".

"I rang the company and was told the same thing.

But general manager Mike Rutherford told the Herald there was no turban ban at First Security and the email "was the result of a misunderstanding by the person who authored the correspondence".

"We employ quite a number of officers who are from the Sikh community and they wear their turban whilst on duty on a daily basis," he said.

Andrea Horwath’s NDP adopts racist candidate questionnaire
DATE: 07 AUGUST 2011

Our editorial committee at The Canadian, obtained a questionnaire form, that the Ontario NDP is using to “screen” candidates. We had published an article about apparent institutionalized racism, along with apparent corruption within the Ontario NDP.

The Ontario NDP has a category for screening candidates called “Racialized Persons”. What’s that?

It is readily apparent what the Ontario NDP means by “Racialized Persons”. This term seems to be used by the Ontario NDP, as a modern pseudonym for the term “coloured”. This term was adopted and was used both by the former South African apartheid regime, and by Americans, during the Jim Crow era.

In the apparent view of Ontario NDP bureaucrats, a Caucasian or “white” person is a “normal” Canadian, in contrast with those Canadians who have been “colourized” or what they specifically called “racialized”.

Ann Arbor Woman Reports Being Victim of Hate Crime
She says man yelled racial slurs, pulled gun

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) - An Ann Arbor woman says she was the victim of a hate crime. The Muslim woman who was wearing a head scarf says a man yelled racial slurs, then pulled a gun on her. The FBI and CAIR are getting involved in the case.

"Nobody deserves to be put through what I've been put through," the victim told Fox 2.

She says it all happened Sunday morning. She's training to be a nurse and was heading home from the hospital, when she says a man in a 2008 or 2009 Dodge Ram pulled up behind her and started honking the horn.

The woman says she quickly realized why the man wanted her attention. He pulled up next to her, she rolled the window down, and he started yelling racial slurs about how "my people should die" and "how we're terrorists." The victim says the man even pointed a gun.

The woman tells Fox 2 News she got the guy's license plate number and called police, but when investigators ran the number, it didn't come back to any car. She's hoping the man is caught before somebody gets hurt.

"I didn't think he'd shoot me in the middle of an intersection," she said. "I wasn't too scared. You take a hate crime a racist crime this far? People should feel safe where they are no matter where they live, no matter who they are, no matter what they are.

The Council on American Islamic Relations has contacted the FBI about the case.

Kyoto rejection of tsunami-hit city's firewood for bonfire ceremony sparks outrage

In response, the preservation society obtained pieces of firewood from Rikuzentakata and commissioned a private company to screen them for cesium and iodine. Even though no radioactive material was detected, board members of the society were divided over the planned use of the firewood in the bonfire event. In the end, the society decided to scrap the plan on the grounds that "radiation fears cannot be completely erased."

One of the protest calls that the Kyoto Municipal Government received over the suspension of the plan said, "The bonfire is meant to be a repose for the souls of the dead and can be used as an occasion to respond to the feelings of disaster victims. I'm ashamed as a citizen of Kyoto because the suspension of the plan smacks of Kyoto's notoriously exclusivist attitude to newcomers."

Another said, "Rikuzentakata is far away from the nuclear power plant, and yet why are you going to cancel the plan, which represents earnest efforts to convey the thoughts of people in disaster-stricken areas to the bonfire event?"

Embassy deputy chief Zumwalt to attend Nagasaki peace ceremony

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said Sunday that Charge d'Affaires James Zumwalt will attend the peace memorial ceremony in Nagasaki on Tuesday on the 66th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing as representative of the United States.

U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos, who visited Nagasaki twice last year, will not be in Japan due to "previously scheduled travel at the time of the ceremony," according to the embassy.

Zumwalt, deputy chief of the mission at the embassy, attended a similar peace ceremony in Hiroshima on Saturday, and will be the first U.S. government representative to attend both ceremonies in a single year.

"I am honored to be the first U.S. representative to attend the Peace Memorial in Nagasaki, and to express my respect for all the victims of World War II," he said in a press release issued by the embassy.

"The United States looks forward to continuing to work with Japan to advance President (Barack) Obama's goal of realizing a world without nuclear weapons," he said.

Creativity,Apple's Patents, and Satoshi Kanzawa "Asians can't think,..outside the box".

What the racist Kanazawa says, which is most shockingly racist, is that Asians cannot or do not think outside the box.

While they are very good at absorbing existing knowledge via rote memory (hence their high standardized test scores in math and science) or adapt or modify existing technology (hence their engineering achievements), they have not been able to make original contributions to basic science.

Samsung's Battle with Apple is Part of Bigger Culture Problem

Dr. Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist from the London School of Economics, published a paper in 2006 analyzing Asia's creativity problem. In his paper, he notes that while "East Asians have slightly higher mean IQ's than Europeans; East Asians have not been able to make creative use of their intelligence."

Kanazawa provides a number of reasons to why creativity is not easily expressed in East Asia, ranging from political circumstances, difficulty learning new languages, an education system focused rote memorization learning rather than self-expressive creativity, and conformist cultures.

Concerning probably the biggest inhibitor to innovation, Kanazawa points out that conformists stifle scientific innovation the most. Kanazawa writes "Scientific revolutions happen by challenging the established paradigms. No conformists have ever brought about a scientific revolution."

Once More With Feeling - Are Black Actresses Forced To “Ugly” Themselves Up?
Sergio posted to Things That Make You Go Hmm... at 2:42 pm on August 6, 2011

I told the reader one person who immediately came to mind was Taraji P. Henson. Meeting her, I was stuck by how just adorably cute she is in person. However that vision of her has yet to appear on the screen, where either she’s made to look awful (think Hustle and Flow or her matronly appearance in Benjamin Button), or even in films where she’s “normal,” such as The Karate Kid, Not Easily Broken, or Date Night, where she’s made to look haggard and not at all well photographed.

But the worst case I mentioned must be Viola Davis. I’ve met Ms. Davis, and the person I met was incredibly attractive, and with a trim, fantastic body (speaking as a guy I tend to notice things like that…). But that’s not the Viola Davis you regularly encounter in movies. She almost always looks awful, and I suspected at the time perhaps sometimes padded to make her look bigger. And now as she revealed in The Help she was. I mean was that really necessarily for her to gain all that weight and have the padding as well? You mean there are no thin black maids?

The reader then told me about a quote she read once by Kelita Smith who played Bernie Mac’s wife on his sitcom. According to Smith, when she reads for a role in a casting session she purposely de-glamorizes herself to appear as plain as possible, because the filmmakers don’t want to hire attractive black actresses for roles, preferring them to look bad, in order to make white actresses appear better looking which proves what I suspected.

Parents Concerned By Racial Incidents At Pennsylvania High School

There were four documented incidents of black students being called “the N-word” at Arcola Intermediate School.

In May, there were two separate incidents involving graffiti with a racist message on a wall in a boy’s bathroom. One message, discovered May 25 by a black student, said “ [slur removed]-s smell bad.” Another said “All [slur removed]-s must die.”

Black students also reported being called “the N-word” in the hallway and at lunch on a weekly basis.

These incidents reported by three concerned parents of Arcola Intermediate School students have not been documented in the Methacton School District’s “racial reporting” log at www.methacton.org, but school officials said students involved have been disciplined.

Sikh Summer Camp of 125 kids in Chigwell attacked by racist idiots
Written by:GSNWritten on:August 6, 2011 Comments

UK: There is a Sikhi Camp for kids from 7+ currently taking place at the Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College in Chigwell, Essex running up until Sunday. The Camp involves the overnight stay of 120 children. The incident took place yesterday afternoon.

At first around 5 racist thugs, thought to be from a nearby estate, walked into Khalsa College and caused a significant level of commotion. They attacked one Singh who approached them asking what they wanted. They were then successfully forced out of the College premises by a group of Camp sewadars and a fight broke out on the road outside the College. The situation was diffused by a passerby (claiming to be a off duty policeman), who drove the racist thugs off in his 4×4.

Around an hour later the racist thugs returned in a larger number of 20 tooled with baseball bats and blocks of wood. A small group of Sikh kids from the camp were out on a nature walk and were verbally abused but managed to get back into the college. One of the elder sewadars had his car damaged as the group jumped on his bumper and bonnet.

What mainly happened then was a stand off between the racist thugs and the Sewadars around the perimeter of the Khalsa College. The racist thugs mainly hurled racial abuse “Pakis, Muslims, razors and other EDL type chants” although they were tooled up to do more. Eventually the Police came and arrested 2 of the racist thugs but the remaining were still adamant to carry on. The situation diffused as more Police intervened, however the thugs still hovered around the area of the Khalsa Colleg

Back Pay For Slavery

THE PRINCIPLE of reparations was established long ago in the 1833 Act for the Abolition of Slavery throughout the British colonies. But there was a catch to the act - not much different in essence from the original sin of catching Africans for enslavement in the Americas. Reparations were to be made to the perpetrators of human trafficking, not to the victims.

This is how the act opens: "Whereas divers persons are holden (held) in slavery within divers of His Majesty's colonies, and it is just and expedient that all such persons should be manumitted and set free, and that a reasonable compensation should be made to the persons hitherto entitled to the services of such slaves for the loss which they will incur by being deprived of their right to such services ... ," etc.

This is a classic example of the diabolical mindset of 'wicked white people'. Slaveholders were legally entitled to the services of their slaves and therefore had a right to 'reasonable compensation' for loss of service. The enslaved had no such rights or entitlements. They were freed with nothing in their two long hands; just like that rather sad-looking couple standing in a basin of water in New Kingston's 'Emancipation Park'.

And don't think it's a joke. With derisive laughter cynics like to say, 'when you get the money you can check me.' But the Jews got compensation from the Germans; Japanese-Americans got compensation for the atrocities committed against them. Why not Africans? I'd like to know what, exactly, our National Commission on Reparations is doing about it.

Pato, Robinho celebrate Supercoppa with Chinese eye gesture
By Brooks Peck

After Milan beat Inter 2-1 to take the Supercoppa in Beijing, both Pato and Robinho celebrated their first trophy of the new season by holding back their eyes for the camera (see Robinho do it here). While many people consider this to be a racist gesture, it's apparently the thing to do for Brazilian footballers. Santos, after all, recently based a whole advertising campaign for their trip to the Club World Cup in Japan around Neymar and friends doing a similar pose.

Kevin Goudreau’s blue golf shirt is buttoned to the collar. Were it not, heads would surely be turning, because there is a large tattoo of a swastika on his chest.

While Mr. Goudreau does not consider the Norwegian far-right terrorist Anders Behring Breivik an ideological peer, the similarities in their online writings are hard to ignore.

Both demonize multiculturalism, immigration, hate-crimes laws, the media and the left. Both see the solution as social engineering that they imagine will return them to a condition of national homogeneity that never truly existed in the first place.

Where they diverge is on the subject of exactly who poses the primary threat to their Utopias: while Breivik sees Muslim immigrants as the problem, Mr. Goudreau wants all non-whites expelled.

“I feel that Canada’s makeup should be predominantly white European,” he said, adding that would be accomplished through “basically the repatriation of Third World immigrants back to their country of origin.”

Blackrat Says:

Charuzu’s post (#30) reminded me of an old man I used to see sitting at the counter bar every Saturday afternoon. I regularly had a pint in one of those Irish “theme pubs” after my classes and before meeting up with friends. He was Caucasian, probably in his 70s and seemed to be partially deaf. He was always there sitting alone, slowly sipping his way through a pint of Guiness. He spoke no Japanese it seemed, or chose not to and my attempts to strike up a conversation were met with a wan smile and then he turned back to his book. He generally had a second Guiness then either just left quietly or once or twice, phoned home to say he was on his way. I could never get over how lonely and isolated he seemed.

I don’t want to be that man twenty years or so from now, that’s why I won’t be in Japan when I am anywhere near being an old man. “No Country For Old NJ Men” to parahprase a recent movie.

Londoners riot after police shooting

Miles from the tourist hotspots of central London, Tottenham is one of the most deprived areas in all of England, with nearly half of all children living in poverty, according to campaigners. The area is very diverse and home to one of the capital's biggest black populations.

The area also has a history of racial tension and anti-police feeling.

In 1985, Tottenham was the scene of a deadly riot after a local woman suffered heart failure when her home was raided by the police. The Tottenham riots were among the most violent in the country's history, with one officer stabbed to death as he tried to protect firefighters and nearly 60 others hospitalized.

'There ARE too many immigrants in the UK', say seven in 10 Britons
By JACK DOYLE and KIRSTY WALKER
Last updated at 1:48 AM on 5th August 2011

Nearly three quarters of Britons think there are too many immigrants in the country, a survey revealed yesterday.
The international poll, by IPSOS Mori, put the UK third highest in a league table of 23 countries according to concerns about migrant numbers.
And it showed Britain topped the table of countries according to concerns over the impact of migrants on public services.

Some 76 per cent of those questioned said immigration had put too much pressure on hospitals, transport services and schools.
The poll exposes the huge on-going scale of public worry over migration levels in recent years.
Under Labour’s open door immigration policy, the population was boosted by more than 3.2million arrivals from overseas.
Home Secretary Theresa May has made clear her determination to reduce net migration to the ‘tens of thousands’.

But the task of the coalition government in trying to get migrant numbers down to manageable levels has been made harder by a recent spike in new arrivals.
Sir Andrew Green, chairman of the MigrationWatch think tank said: ‘Concern in Britain is almost the highest in the world.
‘This is a measure of the chaotic legacy of three million immigrants admitted by the previous government.
‘The poll is a timely reminder that the present government must keep its pledge to get immigration down to tens of thousands or pay a very heavy price with public opinion.’
Last year net immigration - the difference between those arriving and those leaving - rose to near record levels.
In the year to September 2010 it hit 242,000, the third highest on record and the fastest rate since Eastern European countries joined the EU seven years ago and were allowed to come and work in the UK.

The Global @dvisor survey compared attitudes to immigration in 23 countries including the USA, India and Brazil.
Some 71 per cent of Britons agreed there are ‘too many immigrants in our country’. Only Russians (77 per cent) and Belgians (72 per cent) were more concerned about migrant numbers.
Bottom of the list was Japan where just 15 per cent agreed.

A total of 76 per cent of Britons agreed immigration had put too much pressure on public services, putting this country top of the table ahead of Spain (70 per cent), Belgium (68 per cent) and the US (66 per cent).
Britain was third in the table of attitudes to migrant workers and jobs. Sixty-two per cent said migrants meant it was more difficult to find jobs in Britain. In Russia the figure was 75 per cent and South Africa 64 per cent.
Just one in four (27 per cent) said immigration was good for the economy. One third (33 per cent) of Britons agreed that migrants made the country a more interesting place to live. In Brazil the figure was 49 per cent and Australia 46 per cent.
Ipsos MORI spokesman Ashish Prashar said: ‘Clearly people in Britain are concerned how immigration is affecting their employment opportunities; the strain on public services; and impact on a sluggish economy. These concerns are also reflected in many countries around the world.’

A survey by the department for Communities and Local Government this year found more than half the population want to see numbers coming from abroad to live in Britain reduced by ‘a lot’.
A Home Office cap on the number of migrant workers allowed in from outside the EU came into force in April.
Ministers have also pledged to crackdown on bogus students and colleges, and tighten rules on who can settle in the UK.
Immigration Minister Damian Green said: ‘For too long immigration was allowed to get out of control and we are taking action to reduce net migration back to the tens of thousands.
‘In the past year we have introduced an annual limit on the number of non-European workers able to come to the UK and overhauled student visas.
‘We are currently consulting on restricting settlement rights and the family route.’

Seven in ten (71%) Britons say there are too many immigrants in the country and just a quarter (27%) believe immigration is good for the economy according to new research from Ipsos MORI.

The latest Global @dvisor survey conducted in 23 countries shows that only Russians are more likely than Britons to agree that there are too many immigrants in their country (77% do so). Other countries with similarly high levels of agreement are Belgium (72%), Italy (67%), Spain (67%) and South Africa (66%). The Japanese are the happiest with their current level of immigration – just 15% think there are too many immigrants.

Immigration has raised also raised other concerns – three quarters (76%) of Britons agree that immigration has placed too much pressure on public services while three in five (62%) agree that immigration has made it more difficult for British people to get jobs. Concern about the stress placed on public services by immigration is higher in Britain than any of the other countries included in this survey.

Immigration is most positively seen in Brazil where half (49%) agree that immigrants make their country a more interesting place to live and a similar number (47%) believe immigration is good for the economy of Brazil. Around three in ten Britons say the same (33% and 27%) respectively.

Norway attacks fuel Finland immigration debate
By Ritula Shah
Presenter, The World Tonight, Helsinki

Swedes and Russians have long chosen to settle here, but it is asylum seekers and immigrants arriving from unfamiliar parts of the world who are causing disquiet.

Tukki Salo is having lunch with a friend. A retired English teacher, she says Finland has changed since joining the EU and that newly arrived immigrants have not integrated properly.

We have more foreign people here. I remember in my former days we didn't have any black people here," she says.

"But nowadays there are so many, and it is a very difficult for our government - help them or send them away?"

In total, Finland's immigrant population is small, at around 4%. But Fatbahrde Hetemaj is worried. She came to Finland from Kosovo, 19 years ago.

A member of the prime minister's ruling right-of-centre National Coalition Party, she ran for parliament in this year's elections on an anti-racism platform, but failed to win a seat.

"At the moment racism is something mainly happening on the internet, it doesn't flow into every day life too much," she tells me.

"However, I do think it will evolve to manifest itself more often in real life, not just online.

"Personally, I have had a positive experience as an immigrant. But I have friends who have been shouted at in the street, especially those with dark skin."

Matias Turkkula runs the Finnish anti-immigration website Hommaforum.org. He condemns Breivik's actions but denies that websites like his fuel extremism by exaggerating the problem of immigration.

"People fear there is a large risk that it [immigration] might someday become a very large issue and if that happens it's too late to do anything about it."

"In Finland at the moment right-wing extremists don't have a political agenda… they're committing small crimes like vandalism and hooliganism," she says.

But Sugulle Mohammed Abdirazak who arrived in Finland from Somalia in 1992, faces more immediate worries.

He is training to be an interpreter from Somali to Finnish, and is grateful for the high standard of Finnish healthcare and education, but says finding work is tough.

"When you go to an interview and they see that you are an immigrant they say it's been taken, even though it's free."

Gothenburg tram driver charged for racial slur
Published: 5 Aug 11 16:

The incident occurred on a Saturday evening in December when six teen boys ran to catch the tram, the Nyheter24 news website reported.

After the two fastest-running boys, 16 and 18 years old, manged to reach the tram before it departed from the stop, they proceeded to hold the tram's doors open for their slow-moving friends.

The delay infuriated the driver, who told the teenagers that the tram wouldn't be going anywhere until they left the car.

Four of them immediately did, but the two who'd held up the doors stayed,

After a 10 minute showdown with the stubborn teens, the driver delivered a racist announcement over the tram's public address system.

"It's thanks to these zsvartskallar [lit. "blackheads"] that we've had to wait," the driver announced, according to Nyheter24, employing a derogatory slur commonly used to refer to people in Sweden thought to have foreign backgrounds.

On Friday, the tram driver's racist rant resulted in charges being filed against him in Gothenburg District Court.

"At our workplace there are certain rules and restrictions that every member of our staff must follow. This person has obviously broken these rules," Lars-Börje Björfäll, CEO of Göteborg Spårvägar, told Nyheter24.

Several witnesses have confirmed the boys' reports that the driver demeaningly called them "svartskalle" and "suburban losers".

Were Hiroshima and Nagasaki Racist Acts?

By Palash R. Ghosh | August 5, 2011 2:23 PM EDT

Saturday marks the 66th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima – devastating acts that helped bring World War Two to a close. (Three days after Hiroshima, Nagasaki was similarly battered).

The attacks – the only time nuclear weapons have ever been used in world history to date – killed tens of thousands of people and shocked the planet with the scale of their destruction.

There has been much controversy over the decision to bomb Japan and some speculation that it might have been racially motivated (given that the U.S. military did not drop such weapons on European civilian targets).

Anti-Japanese discrimination was widespread in the United States long before the war, as exemplified by immigration restrictions the government imposed upon the Japanese (as well as other Asians).

However, the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii by the Imperial Japanese military threw that animosity into overdrive that lasted well after the second world war.

About 120,000 Japanese-Americans were rounded up into internment camps during the war, while propaganda was mass- produced that depicted the Japanese as subhuman and extremely cruel and depraved.

Admiral William F. Halsey told a news conference in 1944 that "the only good Jap is a Jap who's been dead for six months."

However, it must be noted that America’s principal enemy in the war, Germany, had surrendered three months prior to these bombings and the first successful test of the weapons occurred in July 1945 (two months after Germany surrendered).

Also, it should be noted that U.S. and allied bombs killed tens of thousands of German civilians during the final stretch of the war, particularly in cities like Dresden, which were practically obliterated off the map.

Major Myron L. Hampton refuted the notion that the decision to bomb Japan was racist in a document he wrote entitled ‘Racism and the Atomic Bomb’ in 1990.

“The effects of the bombing raids on Hamburg and Dresden were just as devastating as the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” Hampton wrote.

“The destruction of the cities and the numbers of people killed were comparable. The shocking factor was that one bomb caused the destruction in Japan, whereas in Europe, continuous bombing raids and multiple assets were used.”

Hampton conceded that Japanese-Americans were treated far worse than their German and Italian counterparts during the war and before.

“There is no doubt that the Japanese and everything that reminded the American public of Japan was greatly despised,” he wrote.

“[The] Japanese were considered to be less than human. Although racial discrimination was blatant, the fact still remains that the United States was equally committed to defeating both enemies and with Winston Churchill's urging, had established a ‘defeat Europe’ first policy. If the atomic bomb had been available prior to the surrender of Germany, it would have been used in Europe, with the blessing of both England and Russia.”

In addition, after Germany had surrendered, the U.S. issued Japan an ultimatum to follow suit – Tokyo refused and kept fighting on.

U.S. President Harry Truman, who must take ultimate responsibility for the atomic bombing, said his reasoning was that by taking such drastic actions against Japan, the war would have been shortened, and countless more lives would have been saved.

Indeed, at the time much of the world reacted favorably to the US bombing of Japan – much relieved after six years of a murderous global war.

Still, the nagging questions that remain – would the U.S. have unleashed atomic weapons against white Europeans – can never really be answered

DirecTV can't seem to make a non-racist commercial

DIRECTV "The Whale" [HQ]2011 Commercial with Dat Phan

DirecTV seems to have a problem on its hands. Lately, it seems that the cable giant just can’t make a non-racist commercial. Last month, DirecTV pulled its “The Truth” commercial because viewers were up in arms over its use of racial stereotypes to depict a cocky black boxer and his obnoxious black entourage. Now the company’s new “The Whale” commercial is falling on Asian stereotypes as a stand-in for a real punchline. The problem is that the commercials aren’t funny, they’re just annoying.

But DirecTV’s commercials…this is just laziness. The "Whale” commercial features comedian Dat Phan as a very short, blinged-out Chinese high-roller who is followed by scantily clad white female servants as he strolls through his Chinese-style house, complete with a koi pond, lots of bamboo, and a giant panda. It’s clear that on some level, this is supposed to be funny, but it’s not really clear where the actual humor is… Is it the character’s super-short stature, or is it his super animated voice with his thick, quirky accent? I have no idea!

It’s obvious that the “Whale” character is a knock-off of Ken Jeong’s “Mr. Chow” character from “The Hangover,” but it fails miserably as DirecTV tries to make a silly accent take the place of a legitimate punchline. Worse: I just realized that the whole time that the Dat Phan “Whale” character is talking, Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” (“Stop, children, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down…”) is playing in the background for a nice sprinkling of Vietnam War ambience. Seriously?!

Native American Employee Sues NBC Over Racist Taunts

A Native American studio technician at NBC suffered racial slurs from his colleagues, who strung up an Indian doll on a noose of Christmas lights and called it his “long-lost” daughter.

Coworkers began tormenting Faruq “Peter” Wells, who worked on the “Today” show, “Dr. Oz” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” after he returned from vacation in the summer of 2009, he claims in a lawsuit filed Friday in Manhattan Supreme Court. When NBC’s Human Resources Department told him to simply ignore the problem, he quit his job in August of 2009.

On June 14, 2009, he returned from vacationing in Arizona, and his colleague Rich Citelli told him to look over at the desk of co-worker Evelyn Cordero. Sitting on the desk was a “dark-skinned female doll adorned in traditional Native American clothing,” according to the suit.

Citelli then showed him pictures on a cellphone of the doll strung up in Christmas lights with a note that read “Baby Wells,” the documents claim.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was extremely upset. I felt I was made to be a laughingstock,” Wells told The New York Post.

“I went right to my supervisors and showed them the picture and said, ‘What is this?’ ” Wells said. “One said to me, ‘I told her not to put it up.’ I asked, ‘Who is she?’ He said, ‘Evelyn [Cordero].’ I was shocked because I didn’t expect that from her,” Wells said.

The cruel insults continued when Cordero asked, “Hey Pete, do you have any illegitimate children?”

Then Cordero put the doll on his desk and said, “Look, it’s got your DNA, skin, color, and you both have the same hair,” the suit says.

When Wells went to his union rep the next day, he was told of two prior “racially tinged” incidents, including slurs and drawings scribbled on cafeteria trays and nooses found hanging in the former Conan O’Brien studio.

He explained the incident to HR. The next day, he found a block of fake cheese in the common area, which meant he was a “rat,” said the court papers.

“[HR] called me after a week and told me to return to work and not talk about what happened,” Wells said.

Teenager's racist killer fails with appeal bid

Published Date: 06 August 2011
By BRIAN HORNE

A GANG member who was jailed for life for the racially motivated murder of Glasgow teenager Kriss Donald has lost his bid to overturn the conviction.
Judges have rejected claims that new evidence would clear Imran Shahid - known as Baldy - and called for an investigation, believing the evidence was "fabricated" as part of a plot to fool the Court of Criminal Appeal.

Kriss was 15 when he was snatched from the street in Pollokshields in March 2004.

After taking him across Scotland, his captors returned to the Clyde Walkway near Celtic's training ground in the city's east end.

There Kriss was hauled from the car, stabbed, doused in petrol and set on fire.

Shahid, 34, was said to have snatched Kriss because he was white, and Shahid wanted to avenge some insult outside a Glasgow city centre nightspot.

Muslim man sues after he was fired for not shaving beard
Fri Aug 5, 2011

Abdulkadir Omar, 22, filed his lawsuit against California-based American Patriot Security, seeking back pay and unspecified damages for emotional pain and loss of enjoyment of life, among other reasons.

"Growing up in this country, where the Bill of Rights guarantees freedom of religion, I was let down," Omar told a press conference.

According to the lawsuit, Omar was hired by a local manager of the security company in May 2009 and earned $9 an hour guarding a FedEx warehouse in Washington.

He claims he started the same day he was hired and was not told about the clean-shaven policy.

In November 2009, a supervisor from headquarters told him he had to shave his beard off, which covers his face and doesn't extend past his chin, because of company policy. Omar told the manager that his beard is part of his religious beliefs and refused to shave off the offending hairs. Daily Mail
