Australia must tighten mining, racism laws: U.N.

By Jonathan Lynn
GENEVA | Fri Aug 27, 2010 8:45am EDT

(Reuters) - Australia must tighten rules governing the behavior of its companies, especially mining firms, toward indigenous people at home and abroad, a United Nations human rights body said on Friday.

The 18-member committee of independent experts on racism also told Australia to do more to integrate recent immigrants from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and other Muslim countries and tackle racism against indigenous people in Australia.

The U.N. Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) also voiced concern that the policy of processing refugees outside Australia meant that people seeking shelter in Australia were not being treated properly.

The committee's recommendations were issued in a report following a regular review of Australia's compliance with an international treaty of 1969 prohibiting racism.

"The Committee notes with concern the absence of a legal framework regulating the obligation of Australian corporations at home and overseas whose activities, notably in the extractive sector, when carried out on the traditional territories of Indigenous peoples, have had a negative impact on Indigenous peoples' rights to land, health, living environment and livelihoods," it said.

The committee said Australia needed to do more to integrate recent legal immigrants and tackle violence against Indian students -- which many police have argued is criminally rather than racially motivated.

It also called on the government to do more to help indigenous people such as the Aborigines, for instance by negotiating a treaty with them, giving them better access to legal aid and tackling laws in the Northern Territory that discriminate on the basis of race.

Australia's federal constitution lacks entrenched protection against racial discrimination, it said, recommending that the Racial Discrimination Act prevail over all other legislation that may be discriminatory.

Massacre of migrants in Mexico an 'outrage'

Calderón aide condemns smugglers' murder of 72

by Chris Hawley and Sergio Solache - Aug. 26, 2010

MEXICO CITY - Mexican smugglers killed 72 migrants from Central and South America and piled the bodies in a ranch house, the Mexican government said Wednesday, in a discovery that highlights the growing ruthlessness of Mexico's crime gangs.

The corpses of 58 men and 14 women were found Tuesday after an Ecuadorean migrant escaped from the house and went to a highway checkpoint for help near San Fernando, in Tamaulipas state about 100 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. The man had a bullet wound in his neck.

Foreign mother may be sent home while child treated for cancer
By Marcus K. Garner
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A mother whose daughter is suffering a rare form of cancer at an area hospital could be asked to leave early next month.
Barbados resident Petrah Gooding brought her 7-year-old daughter Niamh Stoute to Atlanta in November to be treated for neuroblastoma at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Aflac Cancer center.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement extended Niamh’s nine-month visitor’s visa to allow her to continue receiving treatment, but Gooding was told she would have to leave her daughter’s side on Sept. 2.

Hope of recovery for former US auto powerhouse?

There is a saying that Detroit is a city of death – the local morgue filled with unidentified bodies supports that.

Most bodies that arrive are there for a few hours only, but some of them have been stored in the coolers for years, since their families cannot afford to properly bury them. Sadly, the city only allots the morgue about $22,000 a year for this purpose

The main problem of Detroit is the lack of jobs. By some estimates, the rate of unemployment here is 50%, mostly because it all was tied to the auto industry. So, post-apocalyptic neighborhoods remained when the jobs, then the residents, did not. Once the forth most populated city in America is the ninth today.

デトロイト 死の町
 かつては栄えた町が今では身元不明の屍体が冷蔵庫に積み重なる街に。

The problem, which led to the city degradation, is poverty, which creates crime, and crime keeps business away. No business – no jobs. No jobs – more poverty, and more deaths.
