米国のオバマ大統領は、米政府が沖縄から海兵隊基地を撤去する用意のある事を確認した。大統領は２８日、ホワイトハウスでの日米首脳会談を総括する安倍首相との共同記者会見で、このように述べた。

オバマ大統領は又「会談で合意された日米防衛協力の新しい指針は、地元住民の負担軽減のため、沖縄も含めた地域の米軍基地の移転に関する努力をさらに強めるものだ」と指摘し、さらに「私は、海兵隊員を沖縄からグァムに移転させる問題を前進させるという我々の義務をあらためて確認した」と述べた。

President Obama, during a press conference today at the White House rose garden, talked about the alliance between the United States and Japan, noting the two nations have updated their plans for cooperation on defense.
The press conference was held in connection with Japan Prime Minister Shinto Abe’s visit to the White House.
New guidelines between the two countries mean Japan now will cooperate with the United States globally, including space and cyberspace, instead of regionally.
“Our forces will plan, train and operate even more closely,” Obama said, according to a written transcript from the White House.
Obama said the new guidelines complement the ongoing realignment of U.S. forces across the region, including Okinawa, which will lessen the impact of U.S. bases on local communities.
“And I reaffirmed our commitment to move forward with the relocation of Marines from Okinawa to Guam,” Obama said.
