資源の処理能力は、servicing rate 、すなわち、その資源が単位時間当たり、transactionを何個処理できるかで表す。

その逆数はaverage service time になる。

サービス率は、処理能力だが、現実に負荷を与えられたときに、どの程度稼働してるかを表すために、utilization rate「稼動率」が使われる。

混雑しているときは、この稼働率は大きくなり、目一杯働いている時は、稼働率は1に極めて近くなる。

このような時、その資源は、システム内でのボトルネックになる。

ボトルネックの資源の前には、処理待ちのtransaction が並ぶ。

どれくらい並んでいるかを長さで表すと、queue length「待ち行列」になり、時間で表すと、waiting time になる。
